  • The bedding zone which influence directly to the safety of dam is supporting the face slab under hydraulic load in concrete faced rockfill dam. In case that leakage is developed due to various ruptured joint or cracks of face slab and etc., the bedding zone should limit the leakage by low permeability and keep the internal stability. In this study for the proper coefficient of permeability various properties, such as gradation, dry density, performance of embankment work and etc. were analysed. The results from the large scale test of permeability and density are summerized as follows : 1. Coefficient of permeability is decreased clearly by increase of dry density. 2. The particles smaller than the No.4 strive( p,) greatly influences the permeability under dry density of 2.24t 1 m3. 3. In case of C.40 and p,40%, even if dry density decreased to 2.0t/m3, the permeability coefficient is assumed to u x1-scm/s and internal stability is abtained. 4. Generally in dam construction since dry density and uniformity coefficient of bedding zone were higher than 2.2t/m3 and 50 respectively p, of 30~40% is assumed to be suitable and permeability coefficient of below 1$\times$10-3cm l s is expectable.

  • The importance of ensuring the inherent safety and security has been more emphasized in recent years to demonstrate the integrity of nuclear facilities under external human-induced events (e.g. aircraft crashes). This work suggests a simulation methodology to effectively evaluate the impact of a commercial aircraft engine onto a dry storage facility. A full-scale engine model was developed and verified by Riera force-time history analysis. A reinforced concrete (RC) structure of a dry storage facility was also developed and material behavior of concrete was incorporated using three constitutive models namely: Continuous Surface Cap, Winfrith, and Karagozian & Case for comparison. Strain-based erosion limits for concrete were suitably defined and the local responses were then compared and analyzed with empirical formulas according to variations in impact velocity. The proposed methodology reasonably predicted such local damage modes of RC structure from the engine missile, and the analysis results agreed well with the calculations of empirical formulas. This research is expected to be helpful in reviewing the dry storage facility design and in the probabilistic risk assessment considering diverse impact scenarios.

  • This study was conducted to check the applicability of pilot-scale co-composting for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil during the winter. Nutrients and microbes were added to enhance the efficiency of bioremediation and fermenting composts were also added to stimulate the microbial activities. As a result. the soil pile was kept at adequate temperature for the bioremediation during the test period of 30∼40 days and initial concentration(2,340mg TPH/kg dry soil) was reduced to 216mg TPH/kg dry soil (approximately 91% removal). During the initial 10∼30 days, it was found that the TPH concentration and the microbial population were rapidly reduced and increased. respectively. The co-composting technology studied can be effectively applied to remediate the diesel contaminated soil during the winter.

  • The incineration process has commonly used for wastes amount reduction and thermal treatments of pollutants as the technologies accumulated. However, the process is getting negative public images owing to matter of hazardous pollutants emission. Specially dioxins became a main issue and were mostly emitted from municipal solid wastes incineration. In this reason, pyrolysis/gasification/melting process is presented as an alternative of incineration process. The pyrolysis/gasification/melting process, a novel technology, is middle of verification of commercial plant and development of technologies in Korea. But the survey about the pollutant emission from the process, and background data in these facilities is necessary. So in this survey, t is investigated that the behavior of chlorobenzenes and chlorophenols in plasma type pyrolysis/gasification/melting plant of pilot scale. We investigated discharging behavior of each phase of chlorobenzene through each process in the plsasma type pyrolysis/gasification/melting process. From this result, it was found that about 99 percent of particle-phase chlorobenzene was removed, but on the other hand gas-phase chlorobenzene was increased by about 600 percent through heat exchanger, flue gas cooling, system and semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). Also, this investigation presented that di-chlorobenzene(DCB) tri-chlorobenzene(TCB), tetra-chlorobenzene(TeCB), penta-chlorobenzene (PCB), except mono-chlorobenzene(MCB) and hexa-chlorobenzene(HCB) were increased through the flue gas cooling system and the semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). It was investigated that concentration of particle-phase chlorophenol was decreased by about 66 percent, but on the other hand, concentration of gas-phase chlorophenol was increased by about 170 percent through heat exchanger, flue gas cooling system, and semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). Also, it was found that di-chlorophenol(DCP), tri-chlorophenol(TCP), and penta-chlorophenol(PCP) were increased through the flue gas cooling system, and the semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). It can be considered that small-scale pilot facility and short investigation period might cause the concentration increase through the flue gas cooling system and the semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). A further study on real-scale pilot facility and accurate investigation may be required.

  • Objectives: Dry socket may occur secondary to the removal of any tooth. However, most dry socket cases develop in the third molar region. Dry socket is multifactorial in nature and has been treated using various modalities with varying success rates. This study assessed the efficacy of platelet rich fibrin (PRF) in established dry socket. Materials and Methods: Ten patients of either sex aged from 41 to 64 years with established dry socket according to established criteria were treated using PRF. Evaluation was performed by observing the reduction of pain using visual analogue scale, analgesic tablet use over the follow-up period, and healing parameters. Results: Pain was reduced on the first day in all patients with decreased analgesic use. Pain was drastically reduced during follow-up on the first, second, third, and seventh days with a fall in pain score of 0 to 1 after the first day alone. The pain scores of all patients decreased to 1 by the first day except in one patient, and the scores decreased to 0 in all patients after 48 hours. Total analgesic intake ranged from 2 to 6 tablets (aceclofenac 100 mg per tablet) over the follow-up period of 7 days. Healing was satisfactory in all patients by the end of the seventh day. Conclusion: PRF showed early pain reduction in established dry socket with minimal analgesic intake. No patients had allergic reactions to PRF as it is derived from the patient's own blood. PRF showed good wound healing. Our study suggests that PRF should be considered as a treatment modality for established dry socket.

  • This paper presents the contact pressure distribution of pin bushing bearings for various lubrication friction modes such as oil film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, a mixed lubrication contact, a boundary contact, and a dry contact. During a sliding contact of a plain bearing, the boundary and dry rubbing contacts are dominated between a piston pin and a pin bushing bearing. This may come from a micro-scale clearance, an explosive impact pressures from the piston head, and an oscillatory motion of a pin bearing. The computed results show that as the oil film parameter $h/{\sigma}$ is increased from the dry rubbing contact to the oil film lubrication friction, the maximum oil film pressure is radically increased due to an increased viscous friction with a thin oil film thickness and the maximum asperity contact pressure is reduced due to a decreased asperity contact of the rubbing surfaces.

  • Nuclear criticality safety analyses (NCSAs) considering burnup credit were performed for the GBC-32 cask. The used nuclear fuel assemblies (UNFAs) discharged from Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 Cycle 6 were loaded into the cask. Their axial burnup distributions and average discharge burnups were evaluated using the DeCART and Multi-purpose Analyzer for Static and Transient Effects of Reactors (MASTER) codes, and NCSAs were performed using SCALE 6.1/STandardized Analysis of Reactivity for Burnup Credit using SCALE (STARBUCS) and Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code, version 6 (MCNP 6). The axial burnup distributions were determined for 20 UNFAs with various initial enrichments and burnups, which were applied to the criticality analysis for the cask system. The UNFAs for 20- and 30-year cooling times were assumed to be stored in the cask. The criticality analyses indicated that $k_{eff}$ values for UNFAs with nonuniform axial burnup distributions were larger than those with a uniform distribution, that is, the end effects were positive but much smaller than those with the reference distribution. The axial burnup distributions for 20 UNFAs had shapes that were more symmetrical with a less steep gradient in the upper region than the reference ones of the United States Department of Energy. These differences in the axial burnup distributions resulted in a significant reduction in end effects compared with the reference.

  • During the hot rolling process, steels develop an oxide scale on their surface. This scale can affect the mechanical properties of the rolled steel and its surface aspect. The main problem comes from the mechanical integrity of the oxide scales which could delaminate or crack, leading eventually to later oxide incrustation within the steel. The objective of the present work is to qualify the mechanical integrity of the iron oxide scales during the hot rolling process. The laboratory experiments use a four point bending test to simulate the mechanical solicitation which takes place during the rolling sequence of the steel slabs. The oxide scales grow on a mild steel at $900^{\circ}C$ under wet or dry atmosphere and the oxidized steel is then mecahnically tested at $900^{\circ}C$ or $700^{\circ}C$. The high temperature four point bending tests are completed with microstructural observations and with the record of acoustic emission to follow in-situ the mechanical damages of the oxide scales. The results show the role of water vapor which promotes the scale adherence, and the role of the temperature as the oxide are more damaged at $700^{\circ}C$ than at $900^{\circ}C$.
