  • The primary purposes of this study are to understand a fundamental effects of electro-deposition on reinforcing steel in saturated Ca(OH)2 electrolyte, and evaluate the corrosion rates of rebars under cyclic 3wt.%NaCl immersion and dry corrosion environment. The three cement mortar specimens with cover thickness 5, 10 and 30mm, were prepared in the experiment. To monitor the corrosion rates of rebars in mortar, the three cement mortar specimens were exposed to 110 wet-drying cycles(8-hour-immersion in 3wt.%NaCl and 16-hour-drying in a room temperature) in the laboratory. During the wet-dry cycles, the polarization resistance, Rp, and solution resistance, Rs, were continuously measured. The instantaneous corrosion rates of rebars on the effect of electro-depositing with sat. Ca(OH)2 electrolyte were estimated from obtained R-1p and degrees of wetness were estimated from Rs values. From the experimental results, the corrosion rates of rebars were greatly accelerated by wet/dry cycles. During the mortars exposed to drying condition, the large increases in the corrosion rates were showed at all rebar surfaces in three mortar specimen, attributed from the accelerated reduction rates of dissolved oxygen in drying process. However, the corrosion rates on rebar surface electrochemically deposited with sat. Ca(OH)2 electrolyte showed the clear decreases, caused by calcium deposits in the porous rust layer.

  • Korea residential housing generally use wet floor heating system 'Ondol' which consist of insulation cushioning, lightweight foamed concrete, hot water pipe and mortar on top of reinforced concrete slab. Wet floor heating system's installation process is too complicate and difficult to supervise field for continuing assurance quality. Also, this method has a huge impact on the progress of construction because it take a long time to cure finishing mortar and lightweight foamed concrete. Therefore, it is considered a disturbance factor of reduction of construction duration for enhancing competitiveness. In this study, we conducted an experiment about the radiant heat performance and temperature difference on upper panel of rolled dry floor heating systems which is jointly developed by Kolon global and Sumisho Metalex for remodeling housing, studio apartment and the urban-life housing.

  • The aim of this research is suggesting dry processed bottom ash as a new and economical source of lightweight aggregate for mortar and concrete. The dry process of bottom ash is an advance method of water-free and no chloride because only cooled down by double dry conveyer belt systems. Furthermore, because of relatively slow cooling down process helps burning up the remaining carbon in bottom ash. Using this dry process bottom ash, to evaluate the feasibility of using as a lightweight aggregate for mortar and concrete, two-phase of experiments were conducted: 1) improving shape of the bottom ash, and 2) controlling grade of the bottom ash. From the first phase of experiment, additional abrasing process was conducted for round shape bottom ash, hence improved workability and compressive strength was achieved while unit weight was increased comparatively. Based on the better shape of bottom ash, from the second phase, various grades were adopted on cement mortar, standard grade showed the most favorable results on fresh and hardened properties. It is considered that the results of this research contribute on widening sustainable method of using bottom ash based on the dry process and increasing value of bottom ash as a lightweight aggregate for concrete.

  • In recent years, polymer-modified mortars using polymer dispersions have been widely used as finish and repair materials in the construction industry because of their excellent properties compares to those of ordinary cement mortar. Especially, the adhesion improvement of ordinary cement mortar and concrete has attracted a great deal of attention from researchers, and several unique and simply applicable techniques for the adhesion improvement have been developed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the abrasion resistance of polymer-modified mortar according various curing methods. The polymer-modified mortar are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and are subjected to three curing methods such as dry rure, standard cure and freezing and thawing cure after two curing methods, and then tested for abrasion. From the test results, the polymer-modified mortars with various polymer-cement ratios have some superior abrasion resistance compared with plain mortar. The abrasion resistance of polymer-modified mortars increase with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, and is better under water cure than any other curing methods. It is concluded that the abrasion resistance of cement mortar is markedly improved by modifying of polymer dispersion.

  • Concrete has been used for many years as a composite material that has excellent mechanical properties and durability for construction. However, concrete is a poor electrical conductor, especially under dry conditions. Concrete that is excellent in both mechanical and electrical conductivity properties may have important applications in the electrical, electronic, military and construction industry(e.g. for de-icing road from snow). The purpose of this investigation is to improve the electrical conductive of cement mortar preparared with coke dust, graphite, carbon black and carbon fiber as filler. From the test result, as the content of electrically conductive material increased, fluidity and strength decreased but resistivity decreased. The resistivity of electrical conductive cement mortar is effect by water/cement, and aggregate. Cement mortar containing carbon fiber has the best electrical properties considering strength. From this study, it is enough to assure the use of carbon fiber, carbon black and graphite as a conductive filler for electrical conductive cement mortar.

  • In this paper, polymer-modified repair materials using polymer dispersions with six repair methods are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and tested for compressive and flexural strengths through each curing condition such as dry cure, water cure, and freezing and thawing cyclic action. And, the adhesive interface between the polymer-modified mortar and mortar substrate is observed by a scanning electron microscope. From the test results, the compressive and flexural strengths of cement mortar repaired by polymer-modified mortar are improved with a rise in the polymer-cement ratio regardless of the type of polymer and curing conditions. Such an improvement in the strengths of polymer-modified repair materials to ordinary cement mortar is explained by the high adhesion of polymer-modified mortar. Strength reduction of polymer-modified repair materials after freezing and thawing cyclic actions is recognized, but it is lower than that of unmodified mortar. Especially, cement mortar repaired by polymer-modified mortar with a St/BA emulsion has good strength properties compared with those of SBR latex and PA emulsion. Accordingly, it is judged that polymer-modified mortars with a St/BA emulsion are possible to use as repair materials to ordinary cement mortar and concrete.

  • The primary purposes of this study are to understand a fundamental aspect of current uniformity around a reinforcing bar (rebar) in cement mortar, and to develop an accurate monitoring method in a wet-dry cycling process with the alternative current (AC) impedance method. Three cement mortar specimens with two embedded rebars were prepared in the laboratory. As a main variable, the distance between two rebars was designed to be 10, 20 and 30 mm with the same thickness of 20 mm. To simulate the corrosion of rebars in concrete structures in a marine environment, three cement mortar specimens were exposed to 15 wet-drying cycles (24-hour-immersion in seawater and 48-hour-drying in a room temperature) in the laboratory. It was observed that the potential level shifted to a noble value during corrosion potential monitoring, which is attributed to acceleration of dissolved oxygen diffusion at the drying process. AC impedance was measured in a frequency range from 100 kHz to 1 mHz on a wet-drying process. A theoretical model was proposed to explain the interface condition between the rebars and cement mortar by using the equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE (constant phase element). It was observed that the diffusion impedance appeared in a low frequency range as corrosion of rebars progresses. At the drying stage of the wet-drying cycles, the currents line for monitoring tended to be non-uniform at the interface of rebar/mortar, being phase shift, ${\theta}$, close to $-45^{\circ}$.
