This study is to investigate the effect of some physical properties of soil on the compaction. The compaction effect depends upon various factors such as soil type, moisture content, gradation and compaction energy. In this study, with steady compaction energy, the relationships between maximum dry density and moisture content, gradation and consistency were analyzed by soil types. Some results obtained in this study are summarized as follows 1. Generally, the coarser the grain size, the bigger is the maximum dry density and the smaller is the optimum moisture content and its moisture-dry denisty curve is relatively steep. The finner the grain size, the smaller is the max. dry density and the bigger is the opt. moisture content and its moisture-dry density curve is less steep. 2. The relationship between max. dry density (${\gamma}$dmax) and opt. moisture content, void ratio, clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit can be represented by the equation ${\gamma}$dmax =ao+a1X(a0>0, a1<0) 3. The relationship between opt. moisture content (Wopt) and clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit can be represented by the equation Wopt=a0+a1X(a0>0, al>0). 4. The fact that maximum dry density of the compacted soil is decreased with the increase of the optimum moisture content in any types of soil tested, and the fact that optimum moisture content can be positively correlated with clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit of the soil, lead to the conclusion that clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit of the soil are direct factors in reduction of the maximum dry density of engineering soil.
Investigation on the compressibility and shear strength of compacted loess is of great importance for the design and operation of engineering infrastructures in filling area. In this study, the mechanical behaviors of Yan'an compacted loess are investigated at various dry densities and water contents by conducting one dimensional compression and direct shear tests. And the elastic compressibility, plastic compressibility, yield stress and strength are obtained from the experiments. Results show that when water content increases, plastic compressibility parameter increases, but yield stress decreases. However, the increase of dry density leads to a decrease in plastic compressibility parameter but an increase in yield stress. In addition, elastic compressibility parameter is found to be a constant which is irrelevant to water content and dry density. As for strength, cohesion and internal friction angle is directly proportional to dry density, but inversely proportional to water content. Moreover, the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were also performed to observe the pore size distribution and microstructure of the specimens. Finally, by using results of MIP and SEM tests, the compressibility and strength behaviours of Yan'an compacted loess are explained from the perspective of pore-size distribution and microstructure.
The bedding zone which influence directly to the safety of dam is supporting the face slab under hydraulic load in concrete faced rockfill dam. In case that leakage is developed due to various ruptured joint or cracks of face slab and etc., the bedding zone should limit the leakage by low permeability and keep the internal stability. In this study for the proper coefficient of permeability various properties, such as gradation, dry density, performance of embankment work and etc. were analysed. The results from the large scale test of permeability and density are summerized as follows : 1. Coefficient of permeability is decreased clearly by increase of dry density. 2. The particles smaller than the No.4 strive( p,) greatly influences the permeability under dry density of 2.24t 1 m3. 3. In case of C.40 and p,40%, even if dry density decreased to 2.0t/m3, the permeability coefficient is assumed to u x1-scm/s and internal stability is abtained. 4. Generally in dam construction since dry density and uniformity coefficient of bedding zone were higher than 2.2t/m3 and 50 respectively p, of 30~40% is assumed to be suitable and permeability coefficient of below 1$\times$10-3cm l s is expectable.

Gravimetric method is usually used to evaluate air-dry density, which is governing physical or mechanical properties of wood. Although it had high evaluation accuracy, the method is time consuming process. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate air-dry density of wood with high accuracy by using polychromatic X-ray and digital detector as alternative of gravimetric method. To quantify polychromatic X-ray projection for evaluating air-dry density, Lambert-Beer's law with the integral value of probability function was used. The integral value was used as weighting factor in the law, and it was determined by conducting simple test at various penetration depths and tube voltage. Mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) of wood also calculated by investigating polychromatic X-ray projection according to species, penetration depth and tube voltage. The species had not an effect on change of MAC. Finally, an air-dry density of wood was estimated by applying the integral value, MAC and Lambert-Beer's law to polychromatic X-ray projection. As an example, the relation of the integral value (${\alpha}$) according to penetration depth (t, cm) at tube voltage of 35 kV was ${\alpha}=-0.00091t{\times}0.0184$ while the regression of the MAC (${\mu}$, $cm^2/g$) was ${\mu}=0.5414{\exp}(-0.0734t)$. When calculation of root mean squared error (RMSE) was performed to check the estimation accuracy, RMSE at 35, 45 and 55 kV was 0.010, 0.013 and $0.009g/cm^3$, respectively. However, partial RMSE in relation to air-dry density was varied according to tube voltage. The partial RMSE below air-dry density of $0.41g/cm^3$ was $0.008g/cm^3$ when tube voltage of 35 kV was used. Meanwhile, the partial RMSE above air-dry density of $0.41g/cm^3$ decreased as tube voltage increased. It was conclude that the accuracy of estimation with polychromatic X-ray and digital detector was quite high if the integral value and MAC of wood were determined precisely or a condition of examination was chosen properly. It was seemed that the estimation of air-dry density by using polychromatic X-ray system can supplant the gravimetric method.
In the construction of earth dam, embankment and highway by filling, a compaction contributes to increasing the density of soil by applying pressure. The effect of compaction depends on various factors such as soil type, moisture content, gradation, consistency, and compaction energy. In this study, the correlations amone maximum dry density, moisture content, dry density, and moisture content are analyzed. Some results obtained in this study are summarizep as follows. 1. The maximum dry density sinoreases with increased of optimum moisture content and the correlations of them can be represented by; ${\gamma}$dmx=a-b(W0) 2. Maximum dry density and liquid limit show negative linear correlation and can be represented by; ${\gamma}$dmx=a-b(LL). 3. Optimum moisture content and liquid limit, plastic limit show positive linear correlation and can be represented by the following equation, W0=a+b(LL) W0=a+b(PL). 4. Liquid limit and plastic limit show positive linear correlation, and can be represented by the following equation, LL=a+b(PL).
This study was made to investigate various engineering properties of earth materials resulting from their changes in density and moisture content. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. The finner the grain size is, the bigger the Optimum Moisture Content(OMC) is, showing a linear relationship between percent passing of NO. 200 Sieve (n) and OMC(Wo) which can be represented by the equation Wo=0.186n+8.3 2. There is a linear relationship of inverse proportion between OMC and Maximum Dry Density (MDD) which can be represented by the equation ${\gamma}$d=2.167-0.026Wo 3. There is an exponential curve relationship between void ratio (es) and MDD whose equation can be expressed ${\gamma}$d=2.67e-0.4550.9), indicating that as MDD increases, void ratio decreases. 4. The coefficent of permeability increases in proportion to decrease of the MDD and this increase trend is more obvious in coarse material than in fine material, and more obvious in cohesionless soil than in cohesive soil. 5. Even in the same density, the coefficient of permeability is smaller in wet than in dry from the Optimum Moisture Content. 6. Showing that unconfined compressive strength increases in proportion to dry density increase, in unsaturated state the compacted in dry has bigger strength value than the compacted in wet. On the other hand, in saturated state, the compacted in dry has a trend to be smaller than the compacted in wet. 7. Even in the same density, unconfined compressive strength increases in proportion to cohesion, however, when in small density and in saturated state, this relationship are rejected. 8. In unsaturated state, cohesion force is bigger in dry than in wet from OMC. In saturated state, on the other hand, it is directly praportional to density. 9. Cohesion force decreases in proportion to compaction rate decrease. And this trend is more evident in coarse matorial than in fine material. 10. Internal friction angle of soil is not influenced evidently on the changes of moisture content and compaction rate in unsaturated state, On the other hand in saturated state it is influenced density. 11. Cohesion force is directly proportional to unconfined compressive strength(qu), indicating that it has approximately 35 percent of qu in unsaturated state and approximately 70 percent of qu in saturated state.

The objectives of this study are to obtain the basic knowledge of anatomical characteristics and wood properties of thinning trees of young teak (Tectona grandis L.F.) for fulfill the timber demand in Indonesia. Nine thinning trees of 5-year-old teak clone trees were used for analyzing the cell morphology and air-dry density. Vessel diameters in pore and outer pore zones were 165 and $90{\mu}m$, respectively. Mean value of fiber diameter, cell wall thickness, and fiber length in outer pore zone were $14.6{\mu}m$, $2.07{\mu}m$, and 1.04 mm, respectively. In addition, mean value of air-dry density was $0.55g/cm^3$. The measurement and values of vessel diameter, fiber diameter, cell wall thickness, fiber length and air-dry density in the experimental had lower than those in the older teak. Therefore, it could be suggested that the wood from thinning young teaks was not appropriate as construction material, but it could be used for furniture which do not need high of strength properties. Furthermore, since the measurements values of anatomical characteristics were still increasing from pith to bark, it could be suggested that 5-year-old teak clones are still in a juvenile phase. Positively significant correlations were found between air-dry density and cell wall thickness, indicating that cell wall thickness is strongly correlated with wood density of teak.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of starch as a retarder on the maximum dry density and the unconfined compressive strength of soil cement mixtures for varied starch contents (0-3%), cement contents (3-12%), and delay times (0-6hrs) in four soils. The experimental results obtained from maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength tests are as follows: 1. Maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength were increased greatly in soil cement mixtues rwhen starch was added as retarder but their value schanged according to soil varieties. 2. Maximum dry density showed at about 0.5 percent to 1.0 percent of starch in KY soil and about 2.0 percent to 2.5 percent in SS soil when delay time was changed in 2.4, and 6 hours in compaction test. 3. The larger content of cement was, the bigger effects of maximum dry density and compressive strength were in soil cement. mixtures. 4. As delay time changed 2.4, and 6 hours in compaction test, 7-day unconfined compressive strength showed the biggest value at about 0.5 percent of starch in KY soil and 2.0 percent in SS soil, and the maximum value of 28-day unconfined compressive strength showed at about 0.5 percent in KY soil and 1.5 percent in SS soil.
Dry gel composed of primary particles more homogeneous than starting boehmite powder was prepared by dispersing and gelling the boehmite powder. The transformation temperatures of boehmite powder, dry gel seeded with 0, 1, 3, 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3, and ball milled gel were 1192$^{\circ}C$, 1184$^{\circ}C$, 1141$^{\circ}C$, 1119$^{\circ}C$, 1117$^{\circ}C$, and 1106$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Sintering behavior of dry gel without seed was similar to that of boehmite powder, but the sintered density of dry gel was improved as much as 10%~15% than boehmite powder. In the case of dry gel seeded with 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3, sintering behavior was much improved. The relative density of the gel seeded with 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3 was 96% when sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. On the other hand, ball milling of the non-seeded sol for 48h resulted in the relative density of 97% when sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The size and amount of $\alpha$-Al2O3 particles added by ball milling were 0.107 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.5 wt%.

In this study , the variation of dry density and unconfined compressive strength were investigated, calcium carbonate, quicklime, portland cement, 19mm monofilaments and fibrilllated fibers were used as reinforcement materials. And calcium chloride was added to cement and calcium carbonate reinforced soil mixture in order to accelerate setting and hardening speed. It appears that dry density is highest in calcium carbonate reinforced soil mixture with 9% of mixing rae. According to increasing the amount of fibers, in soil mixture , the dry density decreased. The more the amount of monofilament fibers is the higher the compressive strength. But the compressive strength is decreased in fibrrillated fiber added soil mixture with more than 1.0% of mixing rate.
