  • With the popularization of drones and the ease of use of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), drone photogrammetry for terrain information has been widely used. Drone photogrammetry enables the realization of high-accuracy three-dimensional topography for the entire area with less effort and time compared to the past direct survey using GNSS or total station. From 3-D topographic data, various topographical analysis is possible. To improve the accuracy of drone photogrammetry, direct GCP surveying in the field is essential, and the numbers and reasonable positioning of GCPs are very important. In the case of beaches or tidal flats on the west coast of Korea, the numbers and location of GCPs are important factors in efficient drone photogrammetry because of the size of the area, difficulties of movement, and the risk from tides. If the RTK (Real-time kinematic) or PPK (Post-processed kinematic) method is used, the increased accuracy of the drone's location enables high-accuracy photogrammetry with a small number of GCPs. This study presents an efficient drone photogrammetry method in terms of time and economy by comparing and analyzing the results of drone photogrammetry using Non-PPK with low-cost PPK-Kit, based on the tests of various numbers and locations of GCPs in the university field including various slopes and structures like coastal terrain.

  • Communication technologies hold a significant place in the swarm flight of drones for surveillance, inspection of disasters and calamities, entertainment performances, and drone collaborations. A GCS(ground control station) for the control of drone swarms needs its devoted communication method to control a large number of drones at the same time. General drone controllers control drones by connecting transmitters and drones in 1:1. When such an old communication method is employed to control many drones simultaneously, problems can emerge with the control of many transmitter modules connected to a GCS and frequency interference among them. This study implemented a transmitter controller to control many drones simultaneously with a communication chip of 2.4GHz ISM band and a Cortex M4-based board. It also designed a GCS to control many transmitter controllers via a network. The hierarchical method made it possible to control many more drones. In addition, the problem with frequency interference was resolved by implementing a time- and frequency-sharing method, controlling many drones simultaneously, and adding the frequency hopping feature. If PPM and S.BUS protocol features are added to it, it will be compatible with more diverse transmitters and drones.

  • In this paper, we implemented a deep learning-based automatic object tracking and handy motion control drone system and analyzed the performance of the proposed system. The drone system automatically detects and tracks targets by analyzing images obtained from the drone's camera using deep learning algorithms, consisting of the YOLO, the MobileNet, and the deepSORT. Such deep learning-based detection and tracking algorithms have both higher target detection accuracy and processing speed than the conventional color-based algorithm, the CAMShift. In addition, in order to facilitate the drone control by hand from the ground control station, we classified handy motions and generated flight control commands through motion recognition using the YOLO algorithm. It was confirmed that such a deep learning-based target tracking and drone handy motion control system stably track the target and can easily control the drone.

  • In this paper, we propose a probabilistic handover scheme for enhancing spectral efficiency in drone-based wireless communication systems. When a moving drone base station (DBS) provides the drone-based wireless communication service to a user equipment (UE) located on the ground, our proposed handover scheme considers the distance between DBS and UE and small scale fading. In addition, our proposed handover scheme considers a handover probability to mitigate the signalling overhead that may occur when performing frequent handovers. Through simulations for drone-based wireless communication systems, we evaluate the spectral efficiency and the handover probability of our proposed handover scheme and the conventional handover scheme. The simulation results show that our proposed handover scheme can achieve higher average spectral efficiency than the conventional handover scheme which considers only the distance between DBS and UE.

  • Currently, the drone is considered as a mobile base station of USN as a method to act as a base station using USN in existing LTE-M and LTE networks for data transmission in unmanned ships. Therefore, the drone, which is a mobile base station, is a sink node equipped with an LTE modem or a short-range communication modem, and can collect safety information of ship operation from the sensor node and transmit the safety information to the ship or transmit the information between the ships. As, if a short-range network is formed by using drones, it will form a communication network around unmanned ships and will be advantageous for collecting information using security and environmental sensors. In this paper, we propose a method to transmit environmental sensor data and to utilize communication between ships using drones to secure the surrounding information necessary for AI operation of unmanned ships in the future.

  • Photogrammetry using drone can produce high-resolution ortho image and acquire high-accuracy 3D information, which is useful. Therefore, this study attempted to determine the possibility of using drone-photogrammetry in park construction by producing a topographic map using drone-photogrammetry and analyzing the problems and accuracy generated during production. For this purpose, we created ortho image and DSM (digital surface model) using drone images and created topographic status map by vectorizing them. Accuracy was compared based on topographic status map by GPS (global positioning system) and TS (total station). The resulting of analyzing mean of the residuals at check points showed that 0.044 m in plane and 0.066 m in elevation, satisfying the tolerance range of 1/1,000 numerical maps, and result of compared lake size showed a difference of about 4.4%. On the other hand, it was difficult to obtain accurate height values for terrain in which existed vegetation when producing the topographic map, and in the case of underground buried objects, it is not possible to confirm it in the image, so direct spatial information acquisition was necessary. Therefore, it is judged that the topographic status map using drone photogrammetry can be efficiently constructed if direct spatial data acquisition is achieved for some terrain.

  • The delivery using drones has been attracting attention because it can innovatively reduce the delivery time from the time of order to completion of delivery compared to the current delivery system, and there have been pilot projects conducted for safe drone delivery. However, the current drone delivery system has the disadvantage of limiting the operational efficiency offered by fully autonomous delivery drones in that drones mainly deliver goods to pre-set landing sites or delivery bases, and the final delivery is still made by humans. In this paper, to overcome these limitations, we propose obstacle detection and landing site selection algorithm based on a vision sensor that enables safe drone landing at the delivery location of the product orderer, and experimentally prove the possibility of station-to-door delivery. The proposed algorithm forms a 3D map of point cloud based on simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology and presents a grid segmentation technique, allowing drones to stably find a landing site even in places without prior information. We aims to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm through streaming data received from the drone.

  • In this paper, gimbal camera control through smart gloves was implemented to increase convenience and accessibility to the control of drones used in various fields. Smart gloves identify human gestures and transmit signals through Bluetooth. The received signal is converted into a signal suitable for the drone through a GCS (Gound Control Station). Signals from smart gloves are expressed in a quaternion method to prevent gimbal locks, but for gimbal cameras, conversion is required to use Roll, Pitch, and Yaw methods. The data conversion mission is performed in the GCS. The GCS transmits an input signal to the control board of the drone through Wi-Fi. The control board generates and outputs the transmitted signal in a PWM manner. The output signal is input to the gimbal camera through the SBUS method and controlled. The input signal of the smart glove averaged 0.093 s and up to 0.099 s to output to the gimbal camera, showing that there was no problem in real-time use.
