During construction of deep foundation in soft rock under varying soil properties, it is essential to locate the rock stratum, especially when drilling with slurry. When slurry is used for drilling, the bottom of the borehole cannot be seen, thereafter soil cuttings cannot be differentiated from soft rock cuttings. A new static rock penetrometer, known as Rock Penetrometer was developed during this study. It could be a simple mechanical device that is attached to the bottom of a Kelly bar which is used to attach drilling tools such as augers and core barrels while drilling. After its calibration in the laboratory, the performance of the static rock penetrometer was verified in the several field test sites.
Hole 1124 of ODP Leg 181 was located in the Rekohu sediment drift off eastern New Zealand in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Mean gain sizes of sortable silt were measured in two drilled cores (1124A and l124B). Chronostratigraphy of core 1124 was correlated with the well-dated nearby core S931, resulting that the age of core 1124 covers the late Pleistocene spanning about MIS (Marine Isotope Stage) 5. Mean grain size of sortable silt seemed to be relatively large during the glacial period, whereas that of the interglacial period was smaller, although several tephra layers contain some coarse-grained pyroclatic particles. The variation in mean grain size of sortable silt in Rekohu sediment drift during the late Pleistocene indicates that the intensity of Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) might have been enhanced during the glacial period as a result of increased production of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW).

To evaluate the compressive strength of concrete, rebound test and ultra pulse velocity methods as well as core test were widely used. The predicted strength effected by age, maturity and degradation of concrete, is a slight difference between in-situ concrete strength. The compressive strength of standard cylinder specimens and core samples by obtained from drilling will have a difference since the concrete is disturbed during the drilling by machinery. And the rebound number and ultra pulse velocity are also changed according to the age and maturity of concrete that effected to the surface hardness and microscpic minuteness. The authors performed the experimental work to reflect the age and core effect to the results from NDE test. The test results considering on the core and age of concrete were compaired with the proposed equation to predict the compressive strength.
According to Sagong and Paik (2003), the side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts is affected by rock quality, types, uniaxial compressive strength, and confining stress. Their approach based upon the Hoek-Brown criterion provides reasonable predictions of the side resistance. In this study, we propose an equation to calculate the side resistance considering size effects of the shafts and investigate the influence of drilled shaft diameter on the side resistance. A new method employs the modified Hoek-Brown criterion together with an empirical size effect of rock core. From the previous field tests, 12 pile load test results were collected and compared with prediction calculated from the equation proposed in this study. In a given condition, similar results between measurement and estimate are observed. From the parametric study on the GSI, confining stress, uniaxial compressive of intact rock and pile size, it is shown that uniaxial compressive strength is the most influential parameter on the side resistance. Though pile size shows the least influence on the resistance, the size effect is apparent as rock quality increases.
Deep-drilled core sampling and high-resolution seismic survey were carried out to identify a Holocene-late Pleistocene boundary in Gyeonggi Bay, western coast of Korea. Analysis of core sections revealed the existence of an oxidized and semi-consolidated sediment layer, Iying immediately below a Holocene horizon (Unit I) and being developed at the top of a late Pleistocene deposit (Unit II). The oxidized sedimentary layer (uppermost part of Unit II) is characterized by semi-consolidated, yellowish sediments showing signs of desiccation and alteration such as high N value, low water content, periglacial cryogenic structure, depletion of smectite, and high geochemical weathering index (Ba/Sr ratio). This feature, together with radiocarbon ages, suggests that the layer has formed as a result of prolonged subaerial exposure of Unit II sediments during the late Wisconsin sea-level lowstand, producing a regional unconformity. Such unconformitic-bounding surface corresponds to a prominent near-surface reflector (R), which is observed in seismic profiles obtained across the drilled-core sections in the study area. Consequently, the buried oxidized-sedimentary layer associated with the seismic reflector possibly plays a key horizon for the understanding of late Quaternary environmental changes as well as evidence of the emergence of the Yellow Sea shelf during the late Wisconsin sea-level lowstand.

This study is as for shale that attract recently geotechnical engineer more and more. like sedimentary rocks and metamorpic rocks, shales have many problem with anisotropy for stength and deformation and they have many problems with quick weathering progress and differential weathering of alternate bedding. In foreign countries, many renowned schalors, like Jaeger(1960),McLamore,Gray(1967),Donath(1972),Nova(1980),Hoek&Brown(1980),Ranamurthy(1985), have already studied for a variety of characteristic and announced high level results of their studies. In domestic also, there are many scholars who have announced high level research papers for shale. this study is a part of these stream. and this study not only analyzed strength anisotropy characteristic along with direction of testing(two-direction) by using point-load test(log-log method) but also compared uniaxial strength between the maximum saturated and dried condition. In this study, we also conducted slaking test. these results of slaking test show weathering characteristic of shales. also, we made the most of field data that obtained during slope stability project and we noticed that RQD measured in the field is much differ from drilled core RQD. In order to come close two different value or access to reality, we suggest new RQD method that artificially reduce RQD by separating core with light hand force.
Multiple logging techniques consisting of geophysical logs, care logs, physical property measurements on core samples have been adopted on a test borehole drilled in the Pungam basin ; a small Cretaceous sedimentary basin located in Sosok area, Hongchon-gun, Kangwon Province, Korea. This study has been made to solve the problem of mismatches between the results of geophysical log and core log analyses. And the cause and range of depth errors as well as logging responses were studied. The result shows that the depth error caused by geophysical log is so small that it can be used as a reliable depth criterion in the borehole. The analysis of physical property measurements is also shown as very effective in determining the real depth and the geology of the borehole.
In the mid-eastern part of the Yellow Sea, large-scale shelf ridges originated from erosion on sand-mud successions that have been presently eroded by strong tidal currents. A three-layered in situ geoacoustic model is provided down to 50 m for the subbottom sedimentary succession of a 45 m water depth using the Hamilton method. The succession is divisible into two-type units of Type-A and Type-B using high-resolution seismic profiles with a deep-drilled YSDP-104 core of 44.0 m in depth below the seafloor. Type-A unit mainly comprises sandy or gravelly sediments, whereas Type-B unit mostly consists of tidal muddy sediments with some thinner sand beds. P-wave speed values are positively compatible with the mean grain size and sediment type of the core sediments. For actual modeling, the geoacoustic property values of the models were compensated to in situ depth values below the seafloor. The detailed geoacoustic model contributes to simulating sound transmission through the sedimentary successions in erosional shelf ridges of variable geoacoustic properties distributed in shallow-water environments of the mid-eastern Yellow Sea.
Drilled sediment core was acquired from Jinheung catchment which was located at Jeollabuk-do Jeongeup city. Elements concentration variation were studied by neutron activation analysis using sediment core by divided 1 cm depth interval. The concentration of major element such as Na, K were increased but Fe was decrease with depth. Minimum elements concentration and particle size were observed at 17 cm depth. This depth was considered 1969 year which was great dry year recorded from the rain fall data and the sedimentation rate was calculated $0.197g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}year^{-1}$.
Electrical resistivity survey (2D and 3D) were employed for detection of possible weak zone of core zones of three central core earth-rockfill dams in Korea. In the 2D results, the core zones is lower resistivity zone with less than $50{\sim}400ohm{\cdot}m$, and the basement is relatively higher resistivity zone with over $1,000ohm{\cdot}m$. In the 3D results, especially, the weak zone with under $100ohm{\cdot}m$ was detected spatial distribution area in the dam. We also drilled boreholes to collect soil samples of core zones of each dam. Water was not used during boring, because water for rotary wash boring could cause structural damages in earth dams. We found that the soil samples of core zones from all of the boreholes correspond to CL (USCS), but we also found that the fluidized or water-saturated soil samples were found in lower resistivity zones. Therefore, the electrical resistivity survey and drilling method without water are a quick and efficient method for structural-health evaluation which is detection of possible weak zones in earth core rockfill dams.
