  • This study was conducted to find an efficient use for mulberry fruit powder (MFP). MFP was added to salad dressing products at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1%, and pH, total acidity, viscosity, color, and emulsion stability were measured and sensory evaluation was conducted. There were no significant differences among salad dressing samples regarding pH, total acidity and moisture content. Salad dressing made with 0.5% MFP showed significantly higher viscosity during storage and made the most stable emulsion. For color, the control sample had the highest L and b values, and these values decreased significantly as the amount of MFP in the sample increased. The control salad dressing had the lowest a value of -3.26, and this value increased significantly as the amount of MFP in the sample increased. Sensory evaluation of salad dressing was performed by a trained consumer panel. The flavor intensity increased as the amount of MFP increased in the salad dressing samples. Sweetness was rated significantly higher as the amount of MFP increased in the samples. The control sample had the lowest sourness and off-flavor, but there was no significant difference compared to the samples containing MFP.

  • The grinding operation is an important machining process for machining of final surface. However, grinding process has inevitable troubles such as loading and glazing for grinding wheel. It is, therefore, an essential research theme to determine the wheel life and the dressing time for efficient grinding. In this study, AE signals (AEavg) generated in the grinding operation were measured and the dressing time was determined from the analysis of the AEavg value. To verify the propriety of the obtained result, the AE signals measured on the grinding and the dressing operation were compared with the grinding force signals and the dressing force which were measured at same time. From the obtained result, it was confirmed that the determination of the wheel life and the dressing tilde by the AE measurement technique proposed in this study can be practically used.

  • The diamond wheel with superabrasive is required for mirror-like surface grinding of brittle materials. But the conventional dressing mothod can not apply to the diamond wheel with superabrasive. Recently electrolytic dressing method was developed for cast-iron bonded diamond wheel with superabrasive. This technique can take replace of lapping and polishing. Using the electrolytic dressing, the surface roughness of workpiece was improved largely and grinding force was very low and the continuity of the grinding force was also very improved. In this study, the purpose is the realization of mirror-like surface grinding of ferrite with electrolytic dressing of metal bonded diamond wheel. For application of ultraprecision grinding for brittle material, superabrasive wheel, air spindle and inprocess electrolytic dressing were used. In addition, the effects of pick current and pulse width on ground surface were investigated, and the suitable dressing conditions for ferrite were found out.

  • In general, grinding is one of the final machining processes which determines the surface quality of machined products. Since the ground surface is affected by the states of grains and voids on the grinding wheel surface, the wheel should be dressed before the machined surface deteriorates over a quality limit This paper describes a systematic approach to decide a proper dressing chance and an optimal dressing depth for the working grinding wheel. An eddy current sensor and a laser displacement sensor are used to measure the loading on the working wheel surface and the topography of the dressed wheel surface respec- tively. The dressing chance can be properly decided through the relational locus between the amount of handing and the machined surface roughness. An optimal dressing depth to guarantee the less wheel loss and the higher wheel surface quality is decided through the analysis of the variance of topography for the dressed wheel surface, which decreases at three different rates according to the accumulated dressing depth.

  • Purpose: Tie-over dressing is widely used to secure skin grafting on face, body, or extremities. It can be a rather complicated task and is not easy to make compressive dressing again if performed in a conventional method. So, we hereby introduce an easy reproducible tie over dressing method. Methods: After completing the skin graft, Cut the silastic drainage longitudinally in half and spread to the grafted skin margin. Drainage is fixed by using the stapes or sutures. A fluffy gauze bolus dressing is placed over a furacin impregnated gauze and wrapped around. After suturing the distal margin of silastics with opposite side using the silk thread either 5 - 0 or 3 - 0, knot of suturing, which is pressed down against the dressing while the threads are tightened, is made into center of each sides. Results: It can make dressing again after observing the grafted skin, and it can also make pressure on the grafted area evenly until the grafted skin is taken. Conclusion: This dressing method makes the surgeons and patients comfortable. To surgeons, it provides more rapid and easier way to do dressing, and to patients, it eliminates pain caused by redressing.

  • Purpose: Open fractures of the foot and ankle require prompt repair of the wound due to the complexity of anatomy, insufficiency of soft tissues and inadequate blood supply. Early flaps and skin grafts are used for this purpose yet general condition of the patient as well as local wound environment often precludes such treatment options. Vacuum- Assisted Closure (VAC) is recently being used in such cases. This study was done to validate the use of VAC together with silver antimicrobial dressing materials in contaminated open fracture wounds. Materials and Methods: We have selected 10 patients with Gustillo-Anderson type III open fractures of the foot & ankle treated with VAC and silver antimicrobial dressing materials from March 2007 to January 2008. The relationship between duration of treatment with wound size, contamination, and degree of soft tissue damage was analyzed. Results: The average age of patients was 36.6 years. The average amount of VAC application time was 23.4 days. Silver dressing materials were used for 16.8 days. Average wound healing time was 51.9 days. Statistically significant relationship was found between wound size, VAC application time and silver dressing material application time. No complications such as osteomyelitis were found after treatment. Conclusion: VAC technique is recently being used in open fractures with wide skin and soft tissue defects, producing good results. A wide array of dressing materials such as silver dressing is in development. We have incorporated the VAC technique together with silver dressing materials in the treatment of open fractures and achieved complication free results.

  • After skin grafting, to prevent hematoma or seroma collection at the graft site, a tie-over dressing has been commonly used. However, although the conventional tie-over dressing by suture is a useful method for securing a graft site, refixation is difficult when repeated tie-over dressing is needed. Therefore, we recommend a redoable tie-over dressing technique with multiple loops threads and connecting silk threads. After the raw surface of each of our cases was covered with a skin graft, multiple loop silk thread attached with nylon at the skin graft margin. We applied the ointment gauze and wet cotton/fluffy gauze over the skin graft, then fixed the dressing by connecting cross-counter multiple loop thread with connecting silk threads. When we opened the tie-over dressing by cutting the connecting silk threads, we repeated the tie-over dressing with the same method. The skin graft was taken successfully without hematoma or seroma collection or any other complications. In conclusion, we report a novel tie-over dressing enabling simple fixation of the dressing to maintain proper tension for wounds that require repetitive fixation. Further, with this reliable method, the skin grafts were well taken.
