  • There is a need to have a dredging index for decision of contaminated sediments dredging. Some differences from nation to nation were found in sediment quality guideline being applied by several nations because of economic level, environmental nature, and multiple uses. Therefore, it is not reasonable to adapt one guideline to be applied to sediments dredging. In this study, we developed dredging index by combining four numerical sets of sediment quality judgement into a quadrodiagram for prudential decisions. This newly developed dredging index was applied to the data obtained from Masan Bay before and after the dredging process. The quadrodiagrams of DI give us a nice graphical comparison and numerical values to explain the relative dredging effect under the circumstances of continuous input loadings. When the guideline value of DI is determined for the judgement of dredging considering social and economic impacts on local community, the DI value will be a scientific and reasonable tool in deciding dredging area and dredging depth.

  • The diverse patterns of separation zone according to the marked bed discordance by dredging at confluence in addition to the confluence angle of tributary and discharge ratio between tributary and main channels have been analyzed by CCHE2D model simulation. The separation zone is defined by inside of zero velocity boundary at down-stream of confluence. The separation zone dose not formed at the $30^{\circ}$ of confluence angle of tributary. The size of separation zone increases as the discharge ratio and confluence angle increase in general. The separation zone decreases as the dredging depth increases which shows the relative momentum reduction compared by the flow volume increasing by dredging at confluence. The contraction factor with the variation of confluence angle and discharge ratio has been investigated and confirmed the corresponding conveyance decreasing results in backwater effect. The regression equation of shape factor with confluence angle and discharge and dredging depth ratios has been suggested.

  • It is well known that whcn waves propagating on a shallow water suddenly encounter a much deeper water they do not propagate further but are reflected. If we apply this phenomenon to a harbor by making the harbor depth much greater than outside, we could improve the harbor tranquillity by making the waves impinging into the harbor be reflected at the harbor entrance. In the present paper, first we apply the numerical models based' on the mild-slope equation and extended mild-slope equation to calculate the long wave resonances in a rectangular harbor with a very large depth discontinuity at its entrance to find that the difference between the models is almost negligible. By applying the numerical model to a realistic model harbor whose inside is entirely dredged, it is found that the effect of dredging is insignificant when the inside depth is twice the outside one but tripled inside depth significantly reduces the long waves of period of one to five minutes whieh may exert a bad influence on ship motion. Moreover, even when only a portion of the harbor basin is dredged, the cffect of dredging in the dredged area is found to be comparable to that of entire dredging, showing that the dredging of harbor basin can be a countenncasure for harbor resonance.

  • The safety of pile foundation is getting declined when the pile foundation acting on lateral load is exposed by dredging. So appropriate reinforcement is needed for stability secure. Thus, in this study, the stability variation and reinforcement range caused by dredging is estimated on the basis of down scale test. The scale effect is determined by real scale numerical analysis. the behavior of pile by dredging stages is estimated by load control type. The credibility is verified through the comparison between down scale model test and numerical analysis.

  • In order to evaluate dredging results scientifically the system which can manage and estimate working process by monitoring dredging process in real-time needs to be constructed. We constructed real-time dredging management system for guidance of a dredging vessel and for survey of dredging construction. This system was designed to have functions of dredger location by GPS, ship direction measurement by GPS/Gyroscope combination, Grab position measurement, dredging depth measurement and correction. In addition, we developed the programs for controlling and operating the constructed system. The system could induce the vessel to accurate position and conduct dredging according to plan and the effectiveness of the system was evaluated through the results of application to actual dredging construction site.

  • In this experiment, the cutter head was designed as the down-scaled shape from the cutter head of the Asan-3 of Hyundai Construction Company. The dredging simulation instrument was installed in the experiment water tank which has the dimension of $4.2m(L){\times}2.2m(W){\times}1.5m(H)$. The speed of all components were controlled manually through the hydraulic tool and motors to find the effective desilting condition. As the results, the experiment was conducted to find the optimate dredging cutter head operation rate. To compare the factors which effect on the dredging effectiveness, the dimensionless dredging volume ratio was introduced and it can be found the best effectiveness at 2.0 m/s suction speed, 8 cm dredging depth and 4~4.5 dimensionless dredging volume ratio. Therefore, in order to take the best effectiveness these 3 components factors should be adequately considered.

  • Modernization of a port requires a considerable port facility expansion through grading up the cargo handling efficiency, increasing water depth of channels and basins to accomodate Large ships, etc. In many ports in the world, the needs of bigger ship calls in excess of conventional capacity of channels and basins demand for capital dredging as well as maintenance dredging resulting from siltation, and those activities are incurring heavy annual expenditure of the ports. • This study investigates reducing characteristics for the spreading of dredged soil and the diffusion of contaminant by silt protector curtain through three dimensional numerical experiment. The numerical medel is modified by combining the sediment transport characteristics for cohesive sediment into the previously developed model. Several numerical experiments have been given in order to investigate the reducing effect of silt protector using two dimensional numerical channel model under various parameters such as upstream flow velocity, depth of silt curtain and the position of dumped materials. Through the evaluation of several simulation results, we knew that the careful design has to be given in the determination of depth and position of silt protector.

  • An experiment to study the effect of temperature, light, and dredging on release of nutrients downstream from Gongjicheon in the Uiam reservoir was carried out in the laboratory using sediments from different depths. At various water temperatures, dissolved total nitrogen was not released, but the average nutrient flux of dissolved total phosphorus was increased (0.034 at $15^{\circ}C$, 0.005 at $20^{\circ}C$, 0.154 at $25^{\circ}C$, $0.592mg/m^2/d$ at $30^{\circ}C$). Dissolved total phosphorous was released in controlled darkness. In contrast, in controlled light, the concentrations of dissolved total phosphorous and dissolved total nitrogen in the overlying water steadily decreased during the study period (70 d), because they were continuously consumed by the growth of photosynthetic algae. However, there was no significant relationship between water nutrient concentration, nutrient release, and the depth of the sediment. We concluded that the dredging of sediment would not affect the nutrient release rate of the sediment, because there were no significant differences in the nutrient concentrations released from the sediment. When the sediment was removed from the surface to 20 cm in depth, the nutrients were not transferred to the water body, implying that the sediment removal had little effect on secondary pollution.

  • In general, the investigation for reservoir dredging are conducting a observation on the horizontal position and the depth of water by assembling GPS/Echo Sounder and Total Station/Echo Sounder, and it is computed at a section computation of riverbed, reservoir volume and dredging plan etc. at that times, the detail plane is determinated about soil volume, height for dredging. Planning has a fault that the method of sound detection using the Echo Sounder doesn't check up distribution of reservoir deposit. In this study, the author emphasizes that implementation of dredging with combined Global Positioning System(GPS) and Ground Penetration Radar(GPR) is well-done more than existed GPS/Echo Sounder. the combined equipment can be adapted to computation and dredging reffering to distribution of deposition. First of all, it is executed water tank modelling test through sampling for apply to test area and is estimated the possibility after passed far accuracy verification of equipment.
