  • A contamination event occurring in water distribution networks (WDNs) needs to be handled with the appropriate mitigation strategy to protect public health safety and ensure water supply service continuation. Typically the mitigation phase consists of contaminant sensing, public warning, network inspection, and recovery. After the contaminant source has been detected and treated, contaminants still exist in the network, and the contaminated water should be flushed out. The recovery period is critical to remove any lingering contaminant in a rapid and non-detrimental manner. The contaminant flushing can be done in several ways. Conventionally, the opening of hydrants is applied to drain the contaminant out of the system. Relying on advanced information and communication technology (ICT) on WDN management, warning and information can be distributed fast through electronic media. Water utilities can inform their customers to participate in the contaminant flushing by opening and closing their house faucets to drain the contaminated water. The household draining strategy consists of determining sectors and timeslots of the WDN users based on hydraulic simulation. The number of sectors should be controlled to maintain sufficient pressure for faucet draining. The draining timeslot is determined through hydraulic simulation to identify the draining time required for each sector. The effectiveness of the strategy is evaluated using three measurements, such as Wasted Water (WW), Flushing Duration (FD), and Pipe Erosion (PE). The optimal draining strategy (i.e., group and timeslot allocation) in the WDN can be determined by minimizing the measures.

  • Up to this day, reinforced spun concrete pipes have been widely used as drain pipes. However, many reinforced spun concrete pipes are exposed to the deteriorated environment such as freezing-thawing damage and chemical attack by the growth of a sulfur-oxidizing bacterium isolated from corroded concrete. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of lining by polymer-modified mortar using polymer dispersions as cement modifier on the development in durability of reinforced spun concrete pipe. The polymer-modified mortars were prepared with various polymer types and polymer-cement ratios, and tested for compressive and flexural strengths, acid, freezing-thawing, and heat resistances. And then, the reinforced spun concrete pipe product lined by polymer-modified mortars was tested for adhesion in tension and surface conditions according to curing temperatures in the field. From the test results, it is apparent that the polymer-modified mortars have good mechanical properties and durability as a lining material. In practice, all polymers can be used as lining the materials for reinforced spun concrete pipe, and types of polymer, and polymer-cement ratio and curing conditions are controlled for a good lining product.

  • Typically, contaminated sediments cause clogging of the drain pipe, which increases the residual water pressure in the drain pipe; this study constructed a system for improving drainage efficiency of tunnels by reducing physical and chemical obstructions through ultrasonic energy generated by a PVDF film. The developed hybrid drainage system utilized a PVDF material film fused with an existing drainage tunnel and maintenance system resulting in the ability to initialize the reverse piezoelectric effect, which was evaluated through an on site application. In order to investigate the maintenance performance of the tunnel drainage system, contaminated sediments were simulated in a drainage pipe to test the effect of ultrasonic conditions on drainage efficiency in the laboratory. As a result of applying the developed portable equipment, the ultrasonic energy was generated for about 20 minutes resulting in a reduction of 74.62% of the contaminated sediments and improving drainage efficiency. From the tunnel, acoustic pressure measurements were taken to calculate the response rate while taking into account the laboratory results. In addition, PVDF film was attached to the transverse and longitudinal side of the drainage pipes where contaminated sediments occur most often in the field tunnel. these calculations show contaminant removal was 90% effective.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of tile drain on Physicochemical properties and crop productivity of soils under plastic film house for three years (1999 - 2001). Tiles (${\Phi}100mm$ PVC pipe) were established at 50-60 cm depth with 1 m, 2 m, and 3 m intervals in Gangseo silt loam soil under 2W-type plastic film house. Cropping system was a pumpkin-pumpkin in the first year, a cucumber-spinach-crown daisy-spinach-young radish in the second year, and a green red pepper-tomato-spinach in last year, with conventional fertilization and drip or furrow irrigation by groundwater pumping. Bulk density and soil hardness of plot with tile drain were lower than those of control (plot without tile drain). Soil water content was also lower in tile drain plot than in control regardless of soil depth, and decreased at narrower interval and longer distance from tile in the same plot, thus suggesting that water flow and density of tile drain plot was higher than those of control. Rhizosphere of spinach, a final crop of third year, was expanded more than 2 cm due probably to improvement of soil physical properties caused by tiles establishment. Electrical conductivity (EC) of topsoil decreased from $1.22dS\;m^{-1}$ to $0.82dS\;m^{-1}$ by tile drain system, and the extent of EC decrease was different with season: higher in spring and lower in summer and autumn. The $NO_{3^-}-N$ concentration in topsoil decreased, from $200mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $39mg\;kg^{-1}$. The effect of tile drain on crop yield varied with crops. Average crop productivity obtained in tile drain plot than that of control crop: 18.2% in 2 m interval, 14.2% in 3 m interval, but lower 0.2% in 1 m interval.

  • Recently, underground pipes are utilized in various fields of applications such as sewer lines, drain lines, water mains, gas lines, telephone and electrical conduits, culverts, oil lines, etc. Most of pipes are installed for long-term purposes and they should be safely installed in consideration of installation conditions because there are unexpected various terrestrial loading conditions. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the structural behavior of glass fiber reinforced thermosetting polymer plastic (GFRP) flexible pipes buried underground. The mechanical properties of the GFRP flexible pipes produced in the domestic manufacturer are determined and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, ring deflection is measured by the field tests and the finite element analysis (FEA) is also conducted to simulate the structural behavior of GFRP pipes buried underground. From the field test results, we predicted long-term, up to 50 years, ring deflection of GFRP pipes buried underground based on the method suggested by the existing literature. It was found that the GFRP flexible pipe to be used for cooling water intake system in the nuclear power plant is appropriate because 5% ring deflection limitation for 50 years could be satisfied.

  • For an urban watershed modeling, the ILLVDAS and SWMM model were the popular rainfall-runoff models using in Korea. However, combined sewerage systems in urban area produce some problems when a flood event happens because of the surcharged precipitation amounts which drain to streams directly. Also, rack of pipe line data and difficulties of modeling yield inappropriate modeling results in urban runoff analysis. In addition, rainfall-runoff models in an urban which using channel routing could be inaccurate and complicated processes. In this paper, the MIKE SWMM model has been applied for a stable urban area runoff analysis. Watershed and pipe line data were established by using past inundated records, DEM data and numerical pipe line data. For a runoff modeling, the Runoff block was adapted to a basin and the Extran block using dynamic equation was applied for sewerage system. After a comparisons against existing models yield that the MIKE SWMM model produce reliable and consistence results without distorting parameter of the model.

  • Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation has 148's stations. Total length is 152km and most of the station is located in the basement and Groundwater occur inflow of 700,000 tons per day. Groundwater is treated as a natural flow way instead of artificial ways. Therefore, most of the collection wells is located in the low place or station for the efficient induction and collecting water. Manhole overtopping is occurring frequently because groundwater is concentrated in the drain pipe near the collecting well and heavy rainfall in summer. As a result, ballast contamination and radon levels are increased in tunnel. This paper introduces a solution is increasing overflow in tunnel, which introduces drainage system of non-motorized that uses differencial head between collecting well and manhole.

  • A computational study on the improvement of the pressure loss of intake system, which is located at engine manifold of the combat vehicle, has been conducted using a finite-volume-based, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. The computational result of the pressure loss through the air cleaner is in good agreement with equivalent experimental data. A parametric study was done for improving of the pressure loss of intake system over the baseline case. The effects of five primary parameters such as the height of inlet, the width of interconnection pipe, the shape of drain chamber and the diameter of filter housing were considered in this study. Consequently, this computational investigation can contribute to finding an optimal guideline for the idea of improvement in the pressure loss of intake system.
