  • The re-enty guidance design involves trajectory optimization, generation of a reference drag acceleration profile with the satisfaction of trajectory constraints. This reference drag acceleration profile can be considered as the reference trajectory. This paper proposes the atmospheric re-entry system which is composed of longitudinal, later and range control. This paper shows the a performance of a re-entry guidance and control system using feedback linearization control and predictive control.

  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV's) provide an important means for collecting detailed scientific information from the ocean depths. The hull resistance of an AUV is an important factor in determining the power requirements and range of the vehicle. This paper describes a design method that uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to determine the hull resistance of an AUV under development. The CFD results reveal the distribution of the hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) of an AUV with a ducted propeller. This paper also discusses the optimization of the AUV hull profile to reduce the total resistance. This paper demonstrates that shape optimization in a conceptual design is possible by using a commercial CFD package. Optimum design work to minimize the drag force of an AUV was carried out, for a given object function and constraints.

  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) provide a useful means of collecting detailed oceano-graphic information. The hull resistance of an AUV is an important factor in determining the power requirements and range of the vehicle. This paper describes a procedure using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for determining the hull resistance of an AUV under development, for a given propeller rotation speed and within a given range of AUV velocities. The CFD analysis results reveal the distribution of the hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) around the AUV hull and its ducted propeller. The paper then proceeds to present a methodology for optimizing the AUV profile in order to reduce the total resistance. This paper demonstrates that shape optimization of conceptual designs is possible using the commercial CFD package contained in Ansys$^{TM}$. The optimum design to minimize the drag force of the AUV was identified for a given object function and a set of constrained design parameters.

Hydrofoil optimization of underwater glider using Free-Form Deformation and surrogate-based optimization

  • Hydrofoil is the direct component to generate thrust for underwater glider. It is significant to improve propulsion efficiency of hydrofoil. This study optimizes the shape of a hydrofoil using Free-Form Deformation (FFD) parametric approach and Surrogate-based Optimization (SBO) algorithm. FFD approach performs a volume outside the hydrofoil and the position changes of control points in the volume parameterize hydrofoil's geometric shape. SBO with adaptive parallel sampling method is regarded as a promising approach for CFD-based optimization. Combination of existing sampling methods is being widely used recently. This paper chooses several well-known methods for combination. Investigations are implemented to figure out how many and which methods should be included and the best combination strategy is provided. As the hydrofoil can be stretched from airfoil, the optimizations are carried out on a 2D airfoil and a 3D hydrofoil, respectively. The lift-drag ratios are compared among optimized and original hydrofoils. Results show that both lift-drag-ratios of optimized hydrofoils improve more than 90%. Besides, this paper preliminarily explores the optimization of hydrofoil with root-tip-ratio. Results show that optimizing 3D hydrofoil directly achieves slightly better results than 2D airfoil.

  • The entry guidance design involves trajectory optimization and generation of a drag acceleration profile as the satisfaction of trajectory conditions during the entry flight. The reference trajectory is parameterized and optimized as piecewise linear functions of the velocity. A regularization technique is employed to achieve desired properties of the optimal drag profile. The regularized problem has smoothness properties and the minimization of performance index then prevents the drag acceleration from varying too fast, thus eliminating discontinuities. This paper shows the trajectory control using the simple control law as well as the information of reference drag acceleration.

  • The objective of this work is to reduce drag on a bluff body within a viscous flow by applying suction or injection of fluid along the surface of the body. In addition to minimizing drag, the optimal solution tends to reduce boundary layer separation and flow recirculation. When discretized by finite elements, the optimal control problem can be posed as a large-scale nonlinearly-constrained optimization problem. The constraints correspond to the discretized form of the Navier-Stokes equations. Unfortunately, solving such large-scale problems directly is essentially intractable. We developed several Sequential Quadratic Programming methods that are tailored to the structure of the control problem. Example problems of laminar flow around an infinite cylinder in two dimensions are solved to demonstrate the methodology. We use these optimal control techniques to study the influence of number of suction/injection holes and location of holes on the resulting optimized flow. We compare the proposed SQP methods against one another, as well as against available methods from the literature, from the point of view of efficiency and robustness. The most efficient of the proposed methods is two orders of magnitude faster than existing methods.

  • Numerical optimization of two dimensional high lift configuration was performed with flow solver and optimization method based on RSM(Response Surface Model). Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was selected for the simulation of highly complex and separated flows on the flap. For the simultaneous optimization of both flap shape and setting (gap/overlap), 10 design variables (eight variables for flap shape variation and two variables for flap setting) were chosen. In order to generate the response surface model, 128 experimental points were selected for 10 design variables. The objective function considering maximum lift coefficient, lift to drag ratio and lift coefficient at specific angle of attack was selected to reduce flow separation on the flap surface. The present method was applied to two dimensional fowler flap in landing configuration. After applying the present method, it was shown that the optimized high lift configuration had less flow separation on the flap surface and lift to drag ratio was suppressed over entire angle of attack range.

  • A method for performing two-dimensional lift-constraint drag minimization in inviscid compressible flows on unstructured meshes is developed. Sensitivities of objective function with respect to the design variables are efficiently obtained by using a continuous adjoint method. In addition, parallel algorithm is used in multi-point design optimization to enhance the computational efficiency. The characteristics of single-point and multi-point optimization are examined, and the comparison of these two method is presented.
