  • Acoustic emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the head/disk interface. In this work the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact between the slider and the disk is presented. Results of the FFT analyses of the AE signal could be used to better understand the interfacial interaction. Also, it was found that wear particles affect the AE signal. Therefore, the signal can be used to monitor the wear particle presence at the interface.

  • In this paper, we suggest a haptic interface and a framework of interaction with haptic feedback based Windows graphical user interface (GUI) in a computing device with touch screen. The events that occur during a user interacts with Windows interfaces through a touch screen are filtered out by the Windows Interface Message Filter (WIMF) and converted into appropriate haptic feedback information by the Haptic Information Provider (HIP). The haptic information are conveyed to users through a stylus-like haptic interface interacting with a touch screen. Major Windows interaction schemes including button click, menu selection/pop-up, window selection/movement, icon selection/drag & drop and scroll have been implemented and user tests show the improved usability since the haptic feedback helps intuition and precise manipulation.

  • Modern design of long suspension bridges must satisfy at the same time spanning very long distances and limiting their response against several external loads, even if of high intensity. Structural Control, with the solutions it provides, can offer a reliable contribution to limit internal forces and deformations in structural elements when extreme events occur. This positive aspect is very interesting when the dimensions of the structure are large. Herein, an updated numerical model of an existing suspension bridge is developed in a commercial finite element work frame, starting from original data. This model is used to reevaluate an optimization procedure for a passive control strategy, already proven effective with a simplified model of the buffeting wind forces. Such optimization procedure, previously implemented with a quasi-steady model of the buffeting excitation, is here reevaluated adopting a more refined version of the wind-structure interaction forces in which wind actions are applied on the towers and the cables considering drag forces only. For the deck a more refined formulation, based on the use of indicial functions, is adopted to reflect coupling with the bridge orientation and motion. It is shown that there is no variation of the previously identified optimal passive configuration.

  • Immersed boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method (IB-LBM) is used for the analysis of flow over the circular cylinder in the concept of fluid-structure interaction analysis (FSI). Recently, IB-LBM has shown the enormous possibility for the application of various biomedical engineering fields, such as the movement of a human body or the behavior of the blood cells and/or particle-based drug delivery system in blood vessels. In order for the numerical analysis of the interaction between fluid and solid object, immersed boundary method and lattice Boltzmann method are coupled to analyze the flow over a cylinder for low Reynolds laminar flow (Re=10, 20, 40 and 100) with Zhu-He boundary condition at the boundary. With the developed IB-LBM, the flow around the cylinder in the uniform flow is analyzed for the laminar flow and the drag and lift coefficients and recirculation length are compared to the previous results.

  • In the present study, the flat plate model test method is developed to evaluate the skin friction of the marine coating in the cavitation tunnel. Six-component force balance is used to measure the profile drag of the flat plate and strut. LDV(laser Doppler velocimetry) technique is also employed to evaluate the drag and to figure out the reason of the drag reduction. The flow velocities above the surface can be used to assess the skin friction, combined with direct force measurement. Since the vortical structure in the coherent turbulence structure influences on the skin friction in the high Reynolds number regime, the interaction between the turbulence structure and the surface wall is paying more attention. This sort of thing is important in the passive control of the turbulent boundary layer because the skin friction can't be determined only by wall condition. As complicated flow phenomena exist around a paint film, systematic measurement and analysis are necessary to evaluate the skin friction appropriately.

  • The pumping characteristics of a disk-type drag pump (DTDP) from free molecular flow region to the slip flow region are calculated by the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In this study, the pumping performance is studied numerically for several channel depths. The interaction between molecules is modeled by variable hard-sphere (VHS). The no time counter method is used as a collision sampling technique. The clearance between rotor and stator is considered an effect on performance. Spiral channels are cut on both upper and lower sides of rotating disks, and stationary disks are planar. A three-dimensional DSMC method for the analysis of steady rarefied flows in a single-stage DTDP has been developed. Velocity and density fields were obtained by the DSMC simulation in the rotor. The present experimental data in the outlet pressure range of $7.5{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}4$ Torr were compared with the DSMC results in the single-stage DTDP. Comparison between the experimental data and DSMC results showed good agreement.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the base drag characteristics of a base bleed projectile with a central propulsive jet by considering the base burning process. Overall fluid dynamic process is modeled by Navier-Stokes equations for reacting flows with two-equation $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence closure. The combustion process is modeled by finite-rate chemistry with a given partially burned exit condition of the BBU (base-bleed unit). Besides the demonstrating the capability of the present CFD solver for the base drag and the interaction of the base flow with a rocket plume, present study gives an insight into the fluid dynamics and the combustion process of the hybrid-propulsion projectile.

  • An improved numerical scheme, to which the hydroelastic method is adapted, is introduced for predicting the motion and structural responses of tension leg platforms(TLPs) in regular waves. The numerical approach in this work is based on a combination of the three dimensional source distribution method and the finite element method. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, are included in the motion and structural response analysis. The drag forces on the submerged slender members, which are proportional to the square of relative velocity, are included in order to estimate the responses of members with better accuracy. Comparisons with other results verify the works in this paper.

  • In recent years the recording density of hard disk has been increasing largely due to the decreasing flying height of head. However, as the flying height is decreased the reliability issue becomes ever more critical. This is because the reliability and durability of hard disk is related to the head/disk interaction as the two components come into partial or full contact. In this work characteristics of friction and stiction in head/disk interface was investigated using constant speed drag test and CSS(contact-start-stop) test. The purpose of this research is to identify the frictional properties of head/disk interface

  • For application to drag-based propulsion system, the dynamics of a segmented structure with multiple hinges undergoing oscillatory motion are investigated. The side flaps are connected to a centre rod with elastic plates acting as hinges. The hinges bend to only one direction so that the structure behave asymmetrically between the power stroke and the recovery stroke. An analytical model is proposed, which estimates the asymmetric deformation of the segmented structure coupled with hinges. Using the proposed model, the effects of key geometric and kinematic parameters on the dynamics of the structure are analyzed.
