Mathematical models can be used to evaluate the effects of operational alternatives of dam on the downstream aquatic environment. An unsteady, one-dimensional water quality model, CE-QUAL-RIVI was calibrated and validated in Geum river as a sub model for the realtime water management system in the basin. The main usage of the model within the system is to predict the effects of flow regulation by Daecheong Dam on the downstream water quality. The validated model was then used to simulate dynamic water quality changes at several key stations responding to different scenarios of reservoir releases under a hypothetical spill condition. The model showed fairly good performance in the simulation of hydrodynamic and mass transport processes under highly unsteady conditions.

Annual average precipitation of Korea is 1,277 mm and around 2/3 of annual precipitation and 74 % of available water resources occurred during monsoon period. In recent years, many agricultural reservoirs have been heightened to increase flood control capacity, reduce flooding damage at downstream areas, and provide sustainable environmental flow during drought period. Thus in this study, the flood control effects of heightening of reservoir banks were simulated with HEC-ResSim and HEC-RAS models. These modes were applied to Bonghak reservoir and it was found that flood control effects were 3~4.5 % with 7 -m heightening. Also, with proper operation (1 m lower of full water level) of reservoir right before the monsoon period, flooding at downstream could be prevented even with design storm of 80 -year recurrence interval. As shown in this study, heightening of agricultural reservoir provides positive effects in flood control and flood damage reduction.
This study analyzes the impact on geomorphic changes downstream due to alternate bars developed weir upstream through laboratory experiments. The disturbance, such as a spur in the side wall, of the flow at the inlet of the channel triggers the development of alternate bar upstream at the beginning of the experiment, and gradually moved downstream with keeping their shapes over time. The bed in the downstream of weir in the mid of channel scoured due to the scarcity of sediment inflow because weir upstream traps it. Moreover, bar migration speed decreases as the bars approaches to the weir with time. However, as time increases, the alternate bars upstream migrate over the weir, and sediment in the eroded bed of the weir downstream are deposited. The phase of the bar upstream changes oppositely after passing through the weir. The phase of the bar downstream changes rapidly as the shape of alternate bar is clear upstream, which is affected by the strong disturbance. The phase of bar changes, and the bar migration speed decreases gradually with time, and finally stopped due to forcing effects on the bar by the disturbance. The faster the reaction of alternate bar with a long spur, the larger the bar height formed downstream and the shorter the bar length. This means that the larger the forcing effect of bar, the more it affects the bar migration. In addition, although the size of the alternate bar increases over time, the bar doesn't migrate downstream and a forced bar is generated.

Numerical study was conducted to clarify effects of added $H_2O$ for the downstream interaction between $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames in counterflow configuration. The reaction mechanism adopted was Davis model which had been known to be well in agreement with reliable experimental data. The results showed that both lean and rich flammable limits were reduced in increase of strain rate. The most discernible difference between the two with and without having $H_2O$ and/or $H_2$ addition into $H_2$-air and CO-air premixtures was two flammable islands for the former and one island for the latter at high strain flame conditions. Even a small amount of $H_2$, in which $H_2$-air premixed flame cannot be sustained by itself, participates in CO oxidation, thereby altering the CO-oxidation reaction path from the main reaction route $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$ with a very long chemical time in CO-air flame to the OH-related reaction routes including $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$ with very short chemical times. This intrinsic nature alters flame stability maps appreciably. The results also showed that chemical effects of added $H_2O$ help lean flames at relatively low strain rate be sustained, and suppress the flame stabilization at high strain rates.
The effects of mixing vanes (MVs) attached to a grid spacer on the characteristics of air-water annular flows were experimentally investigated. To know the effects, a grid spacer with or without MV was inserted in a vertical circular pipe of 16-mm internal diameter. For three cases (i.e., no spacer, spacer without MV, and spacer with MV), the liquid film thickness, liquid entrainment fraction, and deposition rate were measured by the constant current method, single liquid film extraction method, and double liquid film extraction method, respectively. The MVs significantly promote the re-deposition of liquid droplets in the gas core flow into the liquid film on the channel walls. The deposition mass transfer coefficient is three times higher for the spacer with MV than for the spacer without MV, even for cases 0.3-m downstream from the spacer. The liquid film thickness becomes thicker upstream and downstream for the spacer with MV, compared with the thickness for the spacer without MV and for the case with no spacer.
Currently, South Korea implements water resources management policies focusing on integrated water quantity, quality and hydro-ecology management. In particular, rehabilitation of natural rivers has become a major issue. As for reservoir operation during non-flood season, efforts have been made continuously to apply the Deficit Supply Method that can maximize water supply to address droughts and increase in water demand. When Deficit Supply Method is applied, the water supply capacity of reservoir can be maximized. However, downstream water flow would remain constant. In consideration that a natural stream, a long-time-created hydro-ecology, can be significantly influenced by flow variability, the Deficit Supply Method-based reservoir operation can generate effective water supply. Still, it may trigger adverse effects from the aspects of natural rehabilitation and hydro-ecology recovery. The main objective of this study is to analyze impacts on downstream flow duration through reservoir simulation by comparing the Firm Supply Method, the Deficit Supply Method and the Selective Deficit Supply Method, and examining each method's effects on reservoir operation. This study found that the Firm Supply Method could maintain water flow variability, but could not maximize water supply capacity. When the Deficit Supply Method was applied, water supply capacity could be increased while remaining vulnerable regarding water flow variability, as a difference between average flow and low flow was negligible at downstream. In comparison, the Selective Deficit Supply Method was found to sustain time-based reliability at 95% or higher, whereas downstream flow duration could be maintained at a level similar to the level generated by the Firm Supply Method.

In this study we developed a turbidity management system to support the operation for effective turbid water management. The decision-making system includes various models for prediction of turbid water inflow, effective reservoir operation using the selective withdrawal facility, analysis of turbid water discharge in the downstream. The system is supported by the intensive monitoring devices installed in the upstream rivers, reservoirs, and downstream rivers. SWAT and HSPF models were constructed to predict turbid water flows in the Imha and Andong catchments. CE-QUAL-W2 models were constructed for turbid water behavior prediction, and various analyses were conducted to examine the effects of the selective withdrawal operation for efficient high turbid water discharge, turbid water distribution under differing amount and locations of turbid water discharge. A 1-dimensional dynamic water quality model was built using Ko-Riv1 for simulation of turbidity propagation in the downstream of the reservoirs, and 2-dimensional models were developed to investigate the mixing phenomena of two waters discharged from the Andong and Imha reservoirs with different temperature and turbidity conditions during joint dam operation for reducing the impacts of turbid water.
In this study, the Storage Function Method and Loopnet Model (Unsteady flow analysis model) were used to construct the flood prediction system which can predict the effects of the water release in the downstream region of Teachong Dam. The regional frequency analysis (L-moment) was applied to compute frequency-based precipitation, and the flood prediction system was also used for flood routing of the down stream region of Teachong Dam in the Kum River Basin to calculate frequency based flood. The magnitude of flood, water level, discharge, and travel time to the major points of the downstream region of Teachong Dam, which can be used as an imdex of flood control management of Teachong Dam, were calculated.
A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

This work is to observe the wake flow generated behind a ramp. We have conducted a large eddy simulation with two ramp models having different heights with two different inflow conditions. Reynolds number based on the height of the large ramp (LR) and small ramp (SR) are Reh = 2.8×104 and 1.4×104 respectively. The wake flow visualization shows the formation of streamwise counter-rotating vortices pairs at the downstream of the obstacle. These primary vortices are stretched and lifted up when moving downstream. In order to observe the effect of the inflow condition on the wake transition, two different inlet flow conditions are given on the inlet section as an inlet boundary condition. Induced counter-rotating vortices pairs due to sharp-edged triangular ramp obstacles are developed and propagated downstream. In the result, the large ramp shows a more complicated wake structure of the boundary layer than the small ramp.
