  • This technical paper describes and summarizes the flight test results for the longitudinal and lateal-directional dynamic stability characteristics. The target aircraft is the 4-seat carnard type aircraft, FireFly, which has been developed by KARI. Airborne sensors and real-time telemetry system are constructed to obtain the flight test data. The dynamic stability characteristics should be analyzed and tested by estimaitng the aerodynamic parameters in the dymaic equations of motion. The maximum likelihood estimation technique has been applied to the flight data from chirp, 3211, and doublet control inputs.

  • There have been developed many structural and fluid rotorcraft analysis models in rotorcraft community, and also lots of investigations have been conducted to combine these two models. These investigations turn out to be good at predicting the airloads precisely, but they have not taken the blade nonlinear deflection into account. For this reason, the present paper adopts a sophisticated structural model which can describe three-dimensional nonlinear deflection of the blade. And it is combined with two types of aerodynamic model. First one is generalized Greenberg type of finite-time aerodynamic model, which is originally established for a fixed wing, but later modified to be suitable for coupled flap-lag-torsional aeroelastic analysis of the rotor blade. Second aerodynamic model is based on the unsteady source-doublet panel method coupled with a free wake model. The advantages of the present method are capabilities to consider thickness of the blade and more precise wake effects. Transient responses of the airloads and structural deflections in time domain are mainly analyzed in this paper.

  • Experimental studies has been conducted to investigate the effect of orifice diameter ratio on the mixing characteristics of the split element of doublet and triplet elements. The spray characteristics of non-reacting immiscible liquids have been investigated using a patternator. The local volume fraction is measured by use of mean value of each component. This volume measurement represents the mixing characteristics of the liquid, which affect the overall combustion efficiency. The ratio of the orifice diameter, ranging from 1 to 1.5, and that of the jet-momentum, ranging from 0.5 to 6.0, we used. The jet impinging behavior with use of various ratios exhibits substantially different mixing characteristics. Mixing efficiency is maximized when the jet-momentum ratio is increased; this behavior is particularly prominent when the orifice diameter ratio is greater than unity. The split of the triplet element yields better mixing characteristics and is more effective than that of the doublet element in regard to achieving high combustion efficiency. The optimum mixing factor for the triplet element is found to be 0.75, according to our measurement.

  • In this paper, an efficient and robust analysis system for the flutter optimization of laminated composite wings has been developed using the coupled computational method based on the genetic algorithm. General three-dimensional doublet-lattice method is efficiently used to compute generalized aerodynamic forces of T-tail configuration in the frequency domain. Structural dynamic analyses of laminated composite T-tail models are conducted using finite clement method. The classical P-k flutter analysis technique is applied to effectively solve the aeroelastic governing equations in the frequency domain. Optimum design studies using genetic algorithm have been conducted in order to obtain maximum flutter stability of a composite T-tail configuration. The results show that flutter stability can be significantly increased using composite materials with proper optimum design concepts even for the same weight and shape condition. In the view point of engineering design, it is also importantly shown that the optimization of the vertical wing part is highly effective comparing to the optimization of horizontal wing part.

  • Free radicals of lysozyme produced by $Ti-H_2O_2$ system were studied in aqueous solution at room temperature using ESR with a continuous flow-mixing. The spectra, each consisting of a doublet with 5.5 G splitting and a broad resonance covering 80 G splitting are closely similar in shape to that for solid irradiated in vacuum at $77^{\circ}K$ and observed at room temperature immediately on warming. The result is assumed to indicate that the secondary protein radical components formed within 0.01 second, dead time of the mixing chamber, and initiated by hydrogen atom abstraction at ${\alpha}$-carbon atom of peptide chain in liquid solution at room temperature are identical to those resulting from the initial formation of a mixture of positive holes and negative ions by ionization processes as well as radical fragments by the rupture of chemical bonds in the solid during similar time at the same temperature. A broad resonance is observed with considerable amplitude on the high field side of the doublet, which is quite dissimilar to the spectra of irradiated solid lysozyme. This resonance was tentatively attributed to the polypeptide free radical in which unpaired electrons are localized on side chain.

  • The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the $Mg_{1-x}Zn_xFeAlO_4\;(0{\leq}x\leq1.0)$ have been investigated by means of x-ray diffractometry and $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The samples$(0{\leq}x\leq1.0)$ have been prepared by the ceramic sintering method. The x-ray diffraction pattern shows that the crystal structure of the samples is a cubic spinel type. The lattice constant has been found by extrapolation using the Nelson-Riley function and it increases slightly from $8.3496\AA\;to\;8.4128\AA$ with Zn concentration. The $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra for x<0.4 show a superposition of two sextets ana a paramagnetic doublet at room temperature. The superparamagnetic doublet for x<0.4 seems to be due to Al ion in tetrahedral site by the superparamagnetic clustering effect.

The samples($0\leq$x$\leq$0.5) have been prepared by the ceramic sintering method. The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the crystal structure of the samples is a cubic spinel type. The lattice constant has been found by extrapolation using the Nelson- Riley function and it increases slightly from $8.321{\AA}$ to $8.410{\AA}$ with Cd concentration. The Mossbauer spectra for x<0.4 show a superposition of two sextets and a paramagnetic doublet at room temperature. The cation distribution for x=0 was determined to be $[Fe_{0.75}Al_{0.25}]^A[NiFe_{0.25}Al_{0.75}^BO_4$. The superparamagnetic doublet for x< 0.4 seems to be due to A1 ion in tetrahedral site by the superparamagnetic clustering effect.

  • Effects of oxygen deficiency on the room temperature ferromagnetism in Fe-doped reduced $TiO_2$ have been investigated by comparing the air-annealed $Ti_{0.97}Fe_{0.03}O_2$ compound with secondly post-annealed one in vacuum ambience. The air-annealed sample showed a paramagnetic behavior at room temperature. However, when the sample was further annealed in vacuum, a strongly enhanced ferromagnetic behavior was observed at same temperature. $M{\"{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of air-annealed sample at 295K showed a single doublet of $Fe^{3+}$, suggesting that the Fe ions are paramagnetic. On the other hand, the absorption spectra after vacuum-annealing exhibited two doublets, in which one is the same component with air-annealed sample and the other is new doublet corresponding to $Fe^{2+}$ state. This result suggests that the occurrence of ferromagnetism in reduced sample may be interpreted as the contribution of unquenched orbital moment of $Fe^{2+}$ ions.

  • The fuel rods in the pressurized water reactor are continuously supported by a spring system called a spacer grid which is one of the main structural components for the fuel rod cluster (fuel assembly). The fuel rods are vibrating within the reactor due to coolant flow. Since the vibration, what is called flow-induced vibration(FIV), can wear away the surface of the fuel rod, it is important to understand the vibration characteristics of it. In this paper, the vibration analyses and the tests for the dummy rods supported by New Doublet(ND) spacer grids are described. A new FE model which reflects the contact area between the rod and ND spacer grid spring is developed to replace the previous one by which a good agreement could not be obtained with the vibration test. The natural frequency and mode shape calculated by both the previous FE model and the new one are compared with those of experiment fur a single-spanned rod supported by two ND spacer grids. The results by the new model show good agreement to experiment as compared with the ones by previous model. In addition, the new FE model is applied to the vibration analysis fur the dummy rod of 2.19 m tall continuously supported by five ND spacer grids. It is also obtained that the analysis results by the new FE model well agree to experiment ones as the single-spanned rod.

  • After the development of the Firefly, flight tests have been performed to verify the performance and get the parameters for the mathematical model of the aircraft. The flight test data is used to get parameters for the mathematical model of the aircraft through the parameter identification process. An arbitrary control input is applied to the test flight which is a part of parameter identification process. A square wave has been used a control input which is called Doublet signal. The aspect of the signal is same length and magnitude in both (+) and (-) directions such as sine wave. The Doublet signal is composed of a dominant frequency and many high frequencies, so that it is appropriate signal to excite the motion of an aircraft. In this paper, the control input of the flight test data has been analyzed to check the efficiency of the control input using DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform). From the result of analysis, an alternative input was extracted.
