  • This paper focuses on the vibration control of long-span reticulated steel structures under multi-dimensional earthquake excitation. The control system and strategy are constructed based on Magneto-Rheological (MR) dampers. The LQR and Hrovat controlling algorithm is adopted to determine optimal MR damping force, while the modified Bingham model (MBM) and inverse neural network (INN) is proposed to solve the real-time controlling current. Three typical long-span reticulated structural systems are detailedly analyzed, including the double-layer cylindrical reticulated shell, single-layer spherical reticulated shell, and cable suspended arch-truss structure. Results show that the proposed control strategy can reduce the displacement and acceleration effectively for three typical structural systems. The displacement control effect under the earthquake excitation with different PGA is similar, while for the cable suspended arch-truss, the acceleration control effect increase distinctly with the earthquake excitation intensity. Moreover, for the cable suspended arch-truss, the strand stress variation can also be effectively reduced by the MR dampers, which is very important for this kind of structure to ensure that the cable would not be destroyed or relaxed.

  • In this paper, two series of numerical simulations are performed using LS/DYNA3D: The first series of numerical simulations are collision events between a 310,000 DWT double hull VLCC (struck ship) and two 35,000 and 105,000 DWT tankers (striking ships). Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of the VLCC with the striking ships moving at right angle to the YLCC centerline. The second ones, grounding accidents of two 40,000 DWT Conventional and Advanced Double Hull lanker bottom structures, CONV/PD328 and ADH/PD328 models. The overall objective of this study is to understand the structural failure and energy absorbing mechanisms during collision and grounding events for double hull tanker side and bottom structures, which lead to the initiation of inner shell rupture and cause the kinetic energy dissipation to bring the ship to a stop. These numerical simulations will contribute to the estimation of damage extents of collision and grounding accidents and the future improvements in lanker safety at the design stage.

  • Following an internal column failure, adjacent double-span beams above the failed column will play a critical role in the load transfer and internal force redistribution within the remaining structure, and the span-to-depth ratios of double-span beams significantly influence the structural resistance capacity against progressive collapse. Most existing studies have focused on the collapse-resistant performances of single-story symmetric structures, whereas limited published works are available on the collapse resistances of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans. To this end, in this study, numerical models based on shell elements were employed to investigate the structural behavior of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans. The simulation models were validated using the previous experimental results obtained for single- and two-story steel frames, and the load-displacement responses and internal force development of unequal-span three-story steel frames under three cases were comprehensively analyzed. In addition, the specific contributions of the different mechanism resistances of unequal-span, double-span beams of each story were separated quantitatively using the energy equilibrium theory, with an aim to gain a deeper level of understanding of the load-resistance mechanisms in the unequal-span steel frames. The results showed that the axial and flexural mechanism resistances were determined by the span ratio and linear stiffness ratio of double-span beams, respectively.

  • Work on fracture mechanics has provided a technical basis for elimination of main coolant loop double ended guillotine breaks from the structural design basis of reactor coolant system. Without main coolant loop pipe breaks, the tributary pipe breaks must be considered as design bases until further fracture mechanics work could eliminate some of these breaks from design consideration. This paper determines the core support barrel shell responses for the 3 inch pressurizer spray line nozzle break which is expected to be the only inlet break remaining in the primary side after leak-before-break evaluation is extended to smaller size pipes in the near future. The responses are compared with those due to 14 inch safety injection nozzle break and main coolant loop pipe break. The results show that, when the leak-before-break concept is applied to the primary side piping systems with a diameter of 10 inches or over, the core support barrel shell responses due to pipe breaks in the primary side are negligible for the faulted condition design.

  • This study was conduct to investigate the effect of Intermediate culture types on the growth and survival rate of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, in net cage and indoor tank. Intermediate cultures were to determine there that was to setting at marine net cage culture (NCC) in net cage, floor culture (FC), net floor culture (NFC), double shelter culture (DSC) and indoor net cage culture (INCC) in indoor tank, in two replicate. In the growth performance of juvenile abalone reared through intermediate culture, that the absolute growth rate ($AGR_{SL}$, $AGR_{SB}$), daily growth rate ($DGR_{SL}$, $DGR_{SB}$), and specific growth rate ($SGR_{SL}$, $SGR_{SB}$) to the shell length $(_{SL})$ and shell breadth $(_{SB})$ of NCC were higher than those of different groups (P < 0.05). As weight gain (WG), daily weight gain (DWG) and specific weight gain (SWG) to body weight through intermediate culture types in indoor tank was not significant. Also that, survival rate among experimental groups of intermediate culture in indoor tank was not significant. Therefore, these results is showed that should to cultivate for net cage so that intermediate culture of juvenile abalone over 2 cm, accordingly research to effective progress of juvenile abalone intermediate culture in indoor tank be should from various reason as well as feed and rearing condition.

  • In this paper, we performed the design optimization dual-shell and tube heat exchanger on exhaust waste heat recovery for gas heat pump using CFD and RSM. CFD analysis is useful to design the complex structure such as double shell and tube heat exchanger. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such dual-shell and tube heat exchanger for GHP, the computational time can become overwhelming. CFD is powerful but it takes a lot of time for complex structure. Therefore, the CFD analysis is minimized by the optimization using the RSM method. As a result, the number of baffle and tube are optimized by 6 baffles and 25 tubes for heat transfer and flow friction. And then pressure drop and heat transfer is improved about 12.2%. We confirm the design optimization using CFD and RSM is useful on complex structure of heat exchanger.

  • The design and the fabrication of a 1 MVA single-phase HTS transformer are presented in this paper, The rated voltages are 22.9 ㎸ for primary and 6.6 ㎸ for secondary, and the rated currents are 44 A and 152 A respectively. The transformer has HTS double pancake type windings. This type of winding has many advantages such as ease of fabrication and maintenance, good distribution of surge voltage and insulation of windings. Single HTS wire was used for primary winding and four HTS parallel wires were used for secondary winding. These windings are arranged reciprocally with the shell type iron core. An FRP cryostat with room temperature bore was fabricated to isolate the iron core from the coolant. The winding will be cooled down to 65 K with sub-cooled liquid nitrogen using a GM-cryocooler. The sub-cooled liquid nitrogen has advantages of good insulation because of no bubbles as well as increased current capacity of HTS wire.

  • This paper presents conceptual design and 3-D electromagnetic analysis of IMVA transformer with BSCCO-2223 High Tc Superconducting (HTS) tapes. The rated voltages of each sides of the transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV, and double pancake windings were adopted. High voltage and Low voltage sides were composed of several double pancake windings. Four HTS tapes were wound in parallel for the windings of low voltage side and were transposed in order to distribute the currents equally in each conductor The transformer core was designed as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plates and the core is separated with the windings by a cryostat with Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics(FRP). A sub-cooling system using L$N_2$ were designed to maintain the coolant temperature 65K. Finally perpendicular components of magnetic field applied to tapes were calculated 0.247 in the rated operation using 3-D analysis. A real 1MVA HTS transformer will be manufactured in near future based on the design parameters presented in this paper.

  • We developed the doxorubicin-loaded PLGA double-layered microspheres using relatively simple oil-in-water (O/W) solvent evaporation method for sustained release of doxorubicin and investigated the release behavior according to PLGA molecular weight and initial drug loading. The double-layered microsphere was characterized on the surface, the cross-section morphology, the behavior of doxorubicin release for 5 weeks by SEM and fluorescence spectrophotometer. Double-layered microspheres showed smooth surfaces and clear difference between core and outer-shell. As the PLGA molecular weight increased, the release rate of doxorubicin-loaded, double-layered microspheres decreased. These results showed that the release behaviors can be controlled by the variation of molecular weight of PLGA.
