  • This study tries to connect the 'four-elements metaphor' of Bachelard with architectural Images of Coop Himmelblau. Two basic terms of 'phenomenology of imagination' and 'material image' are explored firstly to understand the meaning and value of Bachelardienne four-elements in architectural discourse. The material images of air, fire, water, and clay are applied to the analysis of architectural experience of Busan Cinema Center(BCC) which is selected among works of Himmelblau by reason of its integrity of the four-elements' images. After elaborate Bachelardienne description of the images of BCC, the study examines whole Himmelblau's works since 1968 chronologically from the perspective of the four-elements' architectural images which are found in the analysis of BCC. The study of BCC could discover the images of air in two roofs, the images of fire in Double cone, the images of water in outdoor cinema, Dureraum square, flying brides, and the images of clay in Cinemountain and BIFF Hill. The chronological study found that Himmelblau had started their projects with the images of air in 1968 and tried the fire from 1978, and their regular examination of water and clay images had begun in mid 90's. After 2000, they could show a certain harmony of the four elements in their works.

  • The radioimmunoassay of human thyrotropin was performed in various thyroid states, utilizing the anti-h-T.S.H. antibody and purified human thyrotropin supplied from National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, Bethesda, Ma., U.S.A., and human thyrotropin standard-A obtained from National Institute for Biologic Standards, Mill Hill, London, England. $^{131}I$ labelled h-TSH was prepared after the Chloramine-T method of Greenwood et al. This double antibody system had a assay sensitivity of about $1.0{\mu}U/ml$ of plasma HTS-A and could detect the plasma h-TSH level in the euthyroid patients. Plasma h-TSH level of the normal 26 Korean was $1.1{\pm}0.83{\mu}U/ml$, and that of the 8 hypothyroidisms were 8.3 to $67.5{\mu}U/ml$. In hyperthyroidisms, no cases showed the plasma h-TSH levels over $1.0{\mu}U/ml$. Between the hypothyroidism and euthyroidsm, no overlap is noticed on plasma h-TSH levels. A case of transient hypothyroid state identified by determination of plasma h-TSH level is presented. These results revealed that the radioimmunoassay of h-TSH in plasma could be a sensitive method to diagnose the hypothyroidsm, if not caused by a pituitary disease.

  • Improvement of productivity by forest tree breeding work in Korea was estimated for a few important tree species. Progenies of 17 plus trees of red pine (Pines densiflora) outgrew by 57 percentage compared with progenies of unselected trees at age 15. If best three families are selected among the 17, more than double in volume grow-th is expected. The hybrid Pinus rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda showed more than double volume growth compare to P. rigida at a southern plantation at age 15. However, the superiority of the hybrid decreased at northern plantations, mainly because of low coldhardiness of the hybrid. At a northern plantation, the hybrid grew less than the P. rigida on upper hill, while the hybrid grew much better than the P. rigida on flat area. Another hybrid Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa grew faster than both parents by two to two and half times according to planting sites at age 10. Introduction of Pinus rigida also showed increased volume growth. Volume increase by selection of best five provenances among 45 at age 12 was estimated as 53 percent compare to progenies of plus trees in Korea, Additional 19 percent of volume increase was expected by selection of the best families within the best provenances. Annual production of chestnuts reached about 70,000 M/T by planting resistant clones to chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus), which killed almost all susceptible trees. Although polyploid trees and mutants have been produced by colchicine treatments in over 10 tree species, none of them is economically important Remarkable improvement of productivity is expected by biotechnology in future through selection, hybridization, introduction of foreign genes at cell, cell organelle and gene level, and gene transformation. At present, mass propagation of superior planting materials by tissue culture will increase the productivity.

  • In order to investigate the effects of continual pre-plant application of liquid pig manure (LPM) on growth and quality of rice in double cropping system of rice and malting barley, the liquid pig manure was applied after harvesting rice and malting barley for 3 years. Field experiment was designed with non-fertilizer, chemical fertilizer (CF) 100% recommended by soil testing, rice (LPM 50%+CF 50%)+malting barley (CF 100%), rice (LPM 50%+CF 50%)+malting barley (LPM 50%+CF 50%), rice (LPM 100%)+malting barley (CF 100%) and rice (LPM 100%)+malting barley (LPM 100%). The yield of rice was increased by 13% with increasing culm length and No. of panicle per hill as 482 kg $10a^{-1}$ in rice (LPM 100%)+malting barley (LPM 100%) plot compare with 427 kg $10a^{-1}$ in rice (CF 100%)+malting barley (CF 100%) plot. Whereas, lodging index was high in rice (LPM 100%)+malting barley (LPM 100%) plot by increasing of internodes length from 3rd to 4th and decreasing of breaking strength. When the quality of milled rice was compare with rice (CF 100%)+malting barley (CF 100%) plot, it was decreased by increasing of protein contents and decreasing of rate of perfect grain in rice (LPM 100%)+malting barley (LPM 100%) plot. The content of amylose was not significant by 19.4~22.0%. Toyo-taste value was not different in LPM 100% and CF 100% plot. Rice could be grown with only liquid pig manure 100%, but considering yield and quality of rice and lodging risk, basal fertilization by LPM 50% and top-dressing by CF 50% application was recommended for rice cultivation.

  • In order to know the effect of lime application on the phosphorus and silicate, lime and phosphorus were applied in the soil where phosphorus concentration was low and pH 5.4 The results are as follows 1. The filled grain ratio increases by applying the lime in moderate quantity, conversely the large amount of lime reduced the number of panicles per hill and number of spikelets per panicle. 2. The phosphorus application increased the panicle number, grain number and filled grain ratio. Similarly the yield was also significantly increased. 3. Among the inorganic matter of plant absorbed at the heading time the nitrogen contents was highly correlated with the number of heads, grain number per head and yield, while contents of $P_2O_5$ and $SiO_2$ were significantly correlated with the grain number maturerate and yield respectively. 4. Under the lime application the silica of soil was partly correlated with yield and yield components. But there was a significant difference between contents of $P_2O_5$ in soil and yield componentas. And in the plot of double application of neutralizing lime, significance of 1% level was shown between the $P_2O_5$ in soil and the panicles number and grain number respectively, where as significance of 5% with yield. 5. The phosphorus concentration in soil was gradually increased by the increment of lime application. Also the rate of available silicate in soil was considerably increased by the increment of lime application. That is, the silicated concentration in soil was 86ppm with lime and 59ppm without lime.
