  • Micro-Doppler (MD) shift caused by the micro-motion of a ballistic missile (BM) can be very useful to identify it. In this paper, the MD signatures of three scale-model BMs are investigated using a portable measurement system. The measurement system consists of an X-band 2-by-2 phase comparison mono-pulse radar, and a mechanical device that can impart controlled spinning and coning motions simultaneously to a model to yield the MD signature that replicates the characteristic of each target and the corresponding micro-motion. The coning motion determined the overall period of MD, and the spinning motion increased its amplitude. MD was also dependent on aspect angle. The designed system is portable, and can implement many micro-motions; it will contribute to analysis of MD in various situations.

  • Generally, bistatic clutter, contrary to the monostatic clutter, has nonlinear structure in Angle-Doppler domain due to the noncooperative motion of the transmitter and the receiver. In this paper, we first simulate the bistatic clutter structure resulting from the relative motion of the transmitter and the receiver and then analyze their relations through the bistatic clutter structure in Angle-Doppler domain. Also, we show the operation condition of the transmitter and the receiver leading to low rank of a covariance matrix of the bistatic clutter.

  • This study describes the design and implementation of a simulated signal generator to demonstrate the performance of VHF band radar for the detection of small targets in RCS(Radar Cross Section). The transmission and reception antenna beam widths used in the simulated signal generating apparatus may be large, which may cause problems in the degree of isolation. Interference signal immunity and isolation characteristics are improved by considering operating conditions of VHF radar to solve isolation of antennas. Simulated signal generator performs the following: VHF radar transmission and reception correction, simulation signal generation, target Doppler, RCS and distance simulation, remote control, and GPS clock synchronization function. After the fabrication of the simulated signal generator, the main characteristics, such as the output characteristics and the reflection signal simulations, were tested. When the microwave radar assembly is completed in the future, it will be utilized for the performance evaluation of VHF radar.

  • The 1.29 GHz wind profiler radar is a remote observation device that is useful not only for calculating wind vectors in clear air, but also for detecting rainfall. The Doppler spectrum symmetry test is essential in the horizontal wind treatment process. Since asymmetry may be detected in rainfall cases, it is necessary to reflect in the wind calculation algorithm that the sign of the radial velocity is the same according to the magnitude of the vertical velocity. In the summer of 2017 (June, July), a wind vector calculation algorithm by Bragg scattering and Rayleigh scattering was developed using Changwon wind profiler data, and verified by comparing it with radiosonde data at 6 hour intervals.

  • The characteristics of the dual-Doppler wind retrieval method based on a three dimensional variational (3DVAR) conception were investigated from the following four points of view; the sensitivity of the number of iteration, the effect of the weak constraint term, the effect of the smoothness term, and the sensitivity of the error mixing ratio of the radial velocities. In the experiment, the radial velocities relative to the Gosan and Jindo radar sites of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were calculated from the forecasting of the WRF (Weather Research and Forecast; Skamarock, 2004) model at 1330 UTC 30 June 2006, which is the one and half hour forecast from the initial time, 1200 UTC on that day. The results showed that the retrieval performance of the horizontal wind field was robust, but that of the vertical wind was sensitive to the external conditions, such as iteration number and the on/off of the weak constraint term. The sensitivity of error mixing ratio was so large that even the horizontal wind retrieval efficiency was reduced a lot. But the sensitivity of the smooth term was not so large. When we applied this method to the real mesoscale convective system (MCS) between the Gosan and Jindo radar pair at 1430 UTC 30 June 2006, the wind structure of the convective cells in the MCS was consistently retrieved relative to the reflectivity factor structure. By comparing the vertical wind structure of this case with that of 10 minutes after, 1440 UTC 30 June 2006, we got the physical consistency of our method.

  • In this paper, we propose the low sldelobe digital doppler filter bank design algorithm which is practically applicable to coherent radar equipment in complex air-defense system. Using the proposed algorithm, we can obtain a digital doppler filter bank of lower peak sidelobe level and higher clutter suppression capability. In this method, it is possible to achieve higher target-detectability without loss of Target SNR. The proposed algorithms are verified by simulations and experiments.

  • Since there are very strong clutter returns in airborne and ground weather radars used for the detection of low altitude weather hazards, the reliable weather data cannot be extracted from the weak Doppler weather signal without cancellation of these strong clutter returns. However, the clutter cancellation in Doppler frequency domain is not an easy task since even the fixed clutter returns not to mention the moving clutter can have Doppler shifts due to the antenna rotation and operational environment. Therefore, it was shown in this paper a simple array antenna system can be used for the efficient clutter cancellation in the spatial domain. The weather signal, various moving and fixed clutters were modelled and simulated to prove the performance of this adaptive array system. Also, the degree of accuracy in pulse-pair estimates of a weather radar was compared and analyzed from the simulated weather data.

  • Comparison between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM)/Precipitation Radar(PR) and the C-band doppler radar at Cheju, Kunsan and Pusan, operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), is conducted for validation of the surface precipitation structure, and for calibration of KMA radar instrument. Data used in validation was selected for seven rain events in the south region of about $36^{\circ}N$ and at TRMM overflight in Korea, during the summer season of 2000. Quantitatively comparing radar reflectivities from two different platforms that have different view angles, bandwidths and frequencies is a challenging task. For the comparison, the precipitation patterns are projected on the same area for TRMM PR. Through the comparison, it is realized that the reflectivity from ground-based radar is under estimated, compared to TRMM/PR observations. We discuss that is underestimation may be produced by many factors(system performance, topography, etc).

  • A better understanding of tornado-induced wind loads is needed to improve the design of typical structures to resist these winds. An accurate understanding of the loads requires knowledge of near-ground tornado winds, but observations in this region are lacking. The first goal of this study was to verify how well a CFD model, when driven by far field radar observations and laboratory measurements, could capture the flow characteristics of both full scale and laboratory-simulated tornadoes. A second goal was to use the model to examine the sensitivity of the simulations to various parameters that might affect the laboratory simulator tornado. An understanding of near-ground winds in tornadoes will require coordinated efforts in both computational and physical simulation. The sensitivity of computational simulations of a tornado to geometric parameters and surface roughness within a domain based on the Iowa State University laboratory tornado simulator was investigated. In this study, CFD simulations of the flow field in a model domain that represents a laboratory tornado simulator were conducted using Doppler radar and laboratory velocity measurements as boundary conditions. The tornado was found to be sensitive to a variety of geometric parameters used in the numerical model. Increased surface roughness was found to reduce the tangential speed in the vortex near the ground and enlarge the core radius of the vortex. The core radius was a function of the swirl ratio while the peak tangential flow was a function of the magnitude of the total inflow velocity. The CFD simulations showed that it is possible to numerically simulate the surface winds of a tornado and control certain parameters of the laboratory simulator to influence the tornado characteristics of interest to engineers and match those of the field.

  • Atmospheric boundary layer over equatorial maritime continent was analyzed with Doppler radar. An L-band (1357.5 MHz) boundary layer radar (BLR) has been in continuous successful operation in Selpong, Indonesia(6.45, 106.7E), since November 1992. The performance of the BLR with respect to the observation height range and the wind measurement reliability has been examined on the basis of simultaneous meteorological observations. In the dry season (10-12 October 1993), we have found two types of strong echo structures appearing systematically in the equatorial planetary boundary layer with diurnal variations on clear days. The first type is the striking appearance of a strong echo layer ascending from below 300 m (in the morning) to above 3-5 km (in the afternoon), which is identified with a diurnal variation of the top of the mixing planetary boundary layer. As expected, it is higher in the Indonesian equatorial region than in midlatitudes. Another type is a layered echo appearing at 2-3 km heights from nighttime to morning, which seem to be coincident with humidity gaps. In the rainy season (20-21 February 1994), the height of the atmospheric mining was lower than that in the dry season.
