  • Magnetite deposit of Pocheon Iron Mine is a contact replacement skarn deposit embedded in the carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) which are intruded by granite porphyry. The shape of ore bodies is sweet potato-like and/or irregular massive form; D-ore body, the biggest one is of $180m{\times}40m{\times}200m$ in size. The ore is in general of high grade. The location of the ore bodies is controlled by the fault which strikes north south and dips $60^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$ to the west. A regular distribution of mineralized zones is recognized in order of outward (hanging wall side) from granite porphyry as follows: compact fine-grained skarn, limesilicates, magnetite ore body, marble, limesilicates, pyritized meta-sediments.

  • Yangdan Cave displays as a Vadose Cave rathre than a Phreatic Cave due to its fluvial activated ramnants of the cave beds and walls. Geochemistry experiments of the speleothem (stalactite and stalagmite)were generated in order to find out the cave material characteristics using XRD. The results present that the composition of the cave materials consists of Calcite, Dolomite, Quartz, K, K-Feldspar. Plagioclasc, Illite, and Kaolinite. These materials commonly exhibited less mineral composition than other caves. In terms of calcite compostion of the cave the upper cave materials (d=3.049) contain less than lower cave materials (d=3.055). Finally the calcite compostion of the cave materials between stalactite (d=3.055) and stalagmite (d=3.054) displays simillar values.

  • The petrographic, geochemical, and physical properties of the Jangseong and Chinese coals were investigated. The most common mineral matters of Jangseong coal are kaolinite, muscovite, sericite, illite, quartz and pyrophyllite. Mineral matters in Chinese coal are mainly composed of quartz, calcite, dolomite and kaolinite. Jangseong coal ash has higher content of $Al_2O_3$, $K_2O$, $TiO_2$, As, Rb and V, and lower content of CaO, MgO, $Na_2O$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $P_2O_5$ than those of Chinese coal ash. The liquid limit and the plasticity index of Jangseong coal were compared with those of Chinese coal. The result shows that the briquetting ability of Jangseong coal is a little bit better than that of Chinese coal. The briquetting ability is found to be principally dependent on the type and the content of mineral matter in coal, especially clay mineral.

  • To investigate the evidence for the influence of sea water on Pohang geothermal groundwater, the chemical data for geothermal groundwaters from which are pumped during 48 hours and other hot groundwaters, another groundwater on the well for the purpose of agriculture, were considered. And to predict possible the secondary mineral which are easily to make the clogging, geochemical modeling was carried out using EQ3NR equilibrium solubility code. The results are that 1.4%~3.3%(bulk composition) of sea water were mixed with geothermal groundwater. From the well logging data, when the level of groundwater is drow down, the conductivity is increased in the geothermal groundwater, the existence of transition zone are recognized in the well. The predicted possible secondary minerals are Antigorite [Mg48Si24O85(OH)62], Chrysolite [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4] , Cristobalite, Dolomite, Talc, Tremolite. The recommended cooling temperature of best condition to minimize the production of secondary minerals is same as temperature of geothermal water pumped from the well.

  • To evaluate the main hydrogeochemical characteristics, river waters are investigated using element리 and isotopic compositions in South Korea. In this area, the chemical compositions are mostly classified into three groups; $Ca^{2+}-{HCO_3}^-$ type, $Ca^{2+}-Cl^{-}-{NO_3}^-$ type and $Ca^{2+}-{HCO_3}^{-}-Cl^{-}-{NO_3}^-$ type. These types are affected by two major factors: water-rock interaction and anthropogenic inputs such as sewage and fertilizers. Based on the values of ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$, most of waters are originated from precipitation except two samples contaminated. The lithology and geography of basins mainly control the water chemistry. Elemental and isotopic compositions show that water chemistry are mainly controlled by three end members, especially by carbonate dissolution, and suggest that anthropogenic input affect the water chemistry. Also, three weathering sources are identified: silicates, dolomite and limestone.

  • The Andong serpentinite body is distributed along the Andong fault, and shows an elliptical shape. The serpentinite is composed of serpentine minerals and other various minerals such as forsterite, pyroxene, talc, tremolite, chlorite, prehnite, calcite and dolomite. The serpentine minerals consist primarily of lizardite with minor chrysotile. Antigorite rarely occurs in some veins. The serpentinite is largely divided into two alteration zones by the occurrence and mineral assemblages. One of the alteration zones is composed of a large amount of serpentine minerals. The other is characterized by tremolite and chlorite. The alteration zone composed of tremolite and chlorite seems to have been formed by hydrothermal alteration after the formation of serpentinite. It is considered that the serpentinite have been formed by alteration of the ultramafic rock such as peridotite.

  • Mechanical, physical and petrographic properties of seventeen marble specimens collected from ten marble mines in Korea were investigated. Studied marbles were mainly composed of calcite, dolomite, and various amounts of serpentine, tremolite, olivine, quartz and opaque minerals. Complete and sutured textures were dominant. Compressive strength measured normal to the bedding plane is larger almost two times than that measured parallel to the bedding plane. From the results of Shore hardness test on marbles, water content was an important factor to decrease Shore hardness values. Engineering geological properties, especially, compressive strength, Young's modulus, wear resistance and water absorption could be controlled by the presence of quartz, and the type of marble texture. Water absorption-porosity, compressive strength-Young's modulus, and impact strength index-Los Angeles abrasion couples show good correlation. According to the comparative utility as commercial stone, it could be concluded that marbles from the Banglim mine, Songbo mine, Kwangdeok mine and Bongjeong mine were superior to that of other studied marbles.

  • Electrical resistivity, self-potential and time-domain induced polarization methods were conducted for study of electrical responses on vein-type sulfides ore, which is intruding limestone and dolomite of Ordovician, of Geumpung mine located in Dojeon-ri, Susan-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungbuk. Sulfides bearing chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and galena etc. are deposited in disseminated or vein-type. Good result that resistivity and self-potential surveys detect high grade-estimated mineralized zone located in upper part of existing low grade ore zone is acquisited and is to some extent consistent with induced polarization. Furthmore, a new mineralization zone directing EW is detected.

  • Sutiability of Jungsan clay shale dolomite sludge Anyang feldspar and alumina as raw materials for light-weight porous ceramics was examined. In order to find optimum manufacturing conditions compositions heating temperatuers and heating times were varied and their effects on physical properties were measured and bloating mechanism was investigated. Jungsan clay seems suitable as raw material to make the light-weight constructional materials with 5wt% of ANyang feldspar and alumina added in calcined clay (800$^{\circ}C$) having bulk density of 0.45g/cm3 water absorption of 1.34% and compressive strength of 85kg/cm2 rapid-heated at 1200$^{\circ}C$ for 30min. It is suggested that bloating mechanism depends on the difference of tem-peratures between the inside and outside in specimen the remained gases in interstices can bloat by the li-quid phase of surface with high viscosity and gas pressure at elevated temperature.

  • This study is on the performance evaluation of concrete being used the CaMg based low carbon cement(LCC) as a binder and the rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag(EAF slag) as a fine aggregate. When using the sand as a fine aggregate, compressive strength of the concrete using LCC, as a binder, was reduced 9% comparing with that of OPC concrete. However, when using the EAF slag as a fine aggregate, the compressive strength was increased by 9%. We found that combination LCC and EAF slag contribute to the strength properties of concrete.
