The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how divorced mothers had decided to take custody of their children and became single mothers. The experiences of their lives after divorce were also explored. Data were collected from 17 Korean divorced mothers who were divorced between 2004 and 2009, and were raising at least one minor child. The data were analyzed based on the phenomenological data analysis method. Three main themes were identified: (a) reasons for deciding to have physical custody of the children, (b) mothers' experiences of adjustment after divorce, and (c) mothers' need for a policy concerning the well-being of their families. According to the divorced mothers, they decided to have physical custody of the children since they believed raising children was their natural duty of mothers or they were the most appropriate ones to raise the children rather than the fathers. While the mothers were satisfied with their lives after divorce in general, they also experienced difficulties including child care and financial strain. In particular, most mothers experienced work-family conflict related to the lack of reliable child care. When their family lives and work lives collided, the mothers put their children first and chose jobs that helped them take care of their children at the same time. The divorced single mothers hoped that the social safety net for single parents would expand to support their independence. Implications for single-parent policy are discussed.
This study was based on resilience approach to find out elementary first, second, and third year students' differences of social support and problem solving ability defending on their family situation (low-income divorced family or normal family) by comparing their sex and age. In addition, the purpose of this study was to find out the effect of factors (social support, problem behavior, and problem solving ability) of children defending on their family situation and age. Moreover, it was aimed to find out the effect of social support and problem solving ability of low-income divorced family's children on their problem behavior. Subjects were 165 children in elementary school (grade 1, 2, and 3). For this study two groups were used for comparison. First, low-grade elementary school children with low-income divorced parents (N=87), "group D" and second, with low-income non-divorced parents (N=78) "group N". The questionnaire, picture cards, and teacher's report was used to determine social support perception, problem-solving ability, and problem behavior, respectively. Results showed that "Group D" was determined to show regarding social support, problem-solving ability, and problem behaviors worse than "group N". In conclusion, problem behaviors of "group D" were affected by social support and their problem-solving ability.
This study examined, through a qualitative approach, the viewpoints and beliefs toward divorce held by people who have experienced a divorce. In-depth interviews with divorced individuals (two males and twelve females) were conducted for this study. The findings of the study are summarized as follows. First, the participants of the study had a tendency to withdraw. In other words, they felt powerless and lonely, and they think of themselves as a failure. Second, they clearly recognized the double standard in society toward divorce. They strongly felt that people who had shown tolerant attitudes toward divorce when it was a distant phenomenon suddenly took a different attitude when a divorce occurred to a relative. The fact that openly stated viewpoints toward divorce can be significantly different than unstated attitudes made the participants' lives still harder by adding another burden to the difficulties they already faced from the divorce. As a result, they would rather hide the fact that they were divorced than be open about it with other people. Aside from highly significant others, they attempted to conceal their divorce from others whenever possible. Third, as people who have already experienced divorce, they seem to take a more careful attitude toward divorce than those who have not experienced a divorce. The participants pointed to the social responsibilities to promote public understanding and a sense of value about divorce, and they hoped that our society would communicate better about the difficulties of getting divorced from the perspective of those who have experienced divorce. The participants believed this would ultimately contribute to preventing divorce among others. This study is expected to expand understanding toward the phenomenon of divorce in Korean society, and further, to provide basic information for a clearer understanding of the current state of the Korean family.
The purpose of this study was to explore Korean divorced mothers' experiences with child support. The data were collected from 17 Korean divorced mothers who were divorced between the years of 2004 and 2009 and were raising at least one minor child. Data were analyzed based on the inductive data analysis method. Most mothers negotiated to receive child support from noncustodial fathers without experiencing much conflict with the fathers at the time of the divorce, but only five mothers received child support at the time of the interviews. The mothers experienced difficulties in receiving child support from the fathers under the child support policy in Korea that treated child support as a personal issue and provided little systemic support for child support. Regarding required parenting agreements, most of the mothers acknowledged the need to have parenting agreements but they still wanted voluntary payment of the child support from the fathers. The results suggest that it is necessary to expand parenting education for divorced parents to encourage voluntary participation in parenting and to improve the child support policy by introducing child support guidelines and enhancing child support collection systems.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in the health status of the divorced population according to their income status and to explain the social mechanisms. By analyzing 287 midlife men and women divorced within the last 5 years, we found a strong inverse relationship between their health and income status: the low-income divorced group was more liable to depression and poor physical health. Lack of social connections and having less hope for remarriage after getting a divorce were main factors explaining health vulnerability of the low income group among divorced. Further details have been discussed.
Based upon the ABC-X model and family systems theory, this study examined (1) problem-solving and behavioral strategies utilized by children in divorced families, and (2) factors related to children's post-divorce adjustment. Date were collected from 158 elementary school aged children and adolescents of divorced families in an urban area (56 male and 102 female). Results of this study indicated that there were significant age differences in problem-solving and behavioral strategies utilized by difficult family situations. Factors that are useful in predicting adjustment of divorced children are the following variables: sex, visitation frequency of noncustodial parent, quality of custodial parent-child communication, and length of divorce. Implications for knowledge as well as recommendations for future research are discussed.
Objective: This study examined the facotrs influencing the relationship of adolescents with non-custodial parent. Specifically, this study focused on the comparative influence of the family function as a factor controlling other factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, beliefs about parental divorce, and social support. Methods: Data were collected from 322 adolescents from divorced families using a structured questionnaire. SPSS 22.0, descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression were performed to analyze the data. Results and Conclusion: The results revealed that beliefs about parental divorce, social support, and family function affected the relationship with non-custodial parent. After controlling the influence of other factors, family function was found to have a significant influence on the relationship with non-custodial parents. Based on the results, practical suggestions were provided to enhance the relationship between adolescents and non-custodial parents.

The purpose of this study is to understand the process of "standing alone" in divorced single fathers on the basis of qualitative data collected through in-depth interviews with 10 divorced single fathers. Data were analyzed on the basis of grounded theory analysis in open coding, and 154 concepts, 39 sub-categories, and 14 categories were derived. According to the results of this study, the process phenomenon of divorced single fathers' standing alone was "the restraint and chaos of pain". This study could identify the consecutive process of four identified stages: marriage life's rupture, pain and chaos, deliberation and decision, and role adaption. In selective coding, the core category was "to pass through the restraint of pain and embrace children and stand alone". There were three types of standing alone: maintaining barely, enduring hopefully, and living initiatively. This study showed the necessity of social support and the basic data by type analysis through the process of standing alone. This study provided substantive knowledge generated through the voices of the persons concerned.
This study explored the moderating effects of self control and social support in terms of the relationship between stress and problem behaviors of children of divorced single parent families according to gender. A questionnaire was administered to elementary school-aged children (grades 3-6). 266 children from divorced single parent families were surveyed. The major findings were as follows : first, self control had a moderating role to play in the relationship between stress and problem behaviors for girls. Second, social support also had a moderating effect in the relationship between stress and problem behaviors for boys. Third, the variables having a moderating effect in the relationship between stress and problem behaviors of children also differed according to gender. Therefore differences in gender should be considered when seeking moderating the relationship between stress and problem behaviors of children.
This study explored how a 5th grade girl from a divorced family recovered her femininity through the sandplay therapy. The client was referred by a social worker in her school because of maladjustments such as passivity in school work, poor peer relations, especially with girls, the usage of bad language and a lack of concern about her appearance. There were 41 sessions of the therapy. The first part of the therapy included 1-7 sessions, the middle part 8-35, and the final part 36-41. The client expressed her situation by showing guardians and a peeing boy and by seeking love in the first part. During the middle part she put copper ballerinas and needed to make them alive. In the final part she set figures facing each other who seemed to have mutual understandings and placed cars running well. The client recovered her femininity through the sandplay therapy in a free and protected space.
