  • In this paper, we propose an efficient two-step pattern matching method which promises shape distortion-tolerant recognition of handwritten of handwritten Hangul syllables. In the first step, nonlinear shape normalization is carried out to compensate for global shape distortions in handwritten characters, then a preliminary classification based on simple pattern matching is performed. In the next step, nonlinear pattern matching which achieves best matching between input and reference pattern is carried out to compensate for local shape distortions, then detailed classification which determines the final result of classification is performed. As the performance of recognition systems based on pattern matching methods is greatly effected by the quality of reference patterns. we construct reference patterns by combining the proposed nonlinear pattern matching method with a well-known averaging techniques. Experimental results reveal that recognition performance is greatly improved by the proposed two-step pattern matching method and the reference pattern construction scheme.

  • The structures of the self-complementary decamer duplexes, $d(ACGTATACGT)_2$ (TATA-duplex) and $d(ACGTTAACGT)_2$, (TTAA-duplex) has been obtained in solution by proton NMR spectroscopy and restrained molecular dynamics. The duplexes are essentially B-type, with distortions apparent at the TATA and TTAA steps. Theses distortions and their effects on dynamics have been investigated by the measurement of imino proton exchange time of the base-pairs. The unusual opening kinetics of central A T base-pairs could be correlated to the abnormal structural properties of the corresponding sequences.

  • A method for measuring the loudspeaker distortions at low frequencies without an anechoic is proposed. This method is based on the fact that the n-th harmonic distortion outside the enclosure is boosted by 40log n dB compared to that inside the enclosure. The applicable frequency range is extended by cancelling the effect of standing wave inside the enclosure. Causes of measurement error are also analyzed.

  • This paper investigates control algorithms for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) with back-to-back converter in medium-voltage wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. Operation of DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions causes several problems such as overcurrent, unbalanced currents, active power pulsation and torque pulsation. Three different control algorithms to compensate for the unbalanced conditions have been investigated with respect to four performance factors; fault ride-through capability, efficiency, harmonic distortions and torque pulsation. The control algorithm having zero amplitude of negative sequence current shows the most cost-effective performance concerning fault ride-through capability and efficiency. The control algorithm for nullifying the oscillating component of the instantaneous active power generates least harmonic distortions. Combination of these two control algorithms depending on the operating requirements presents most optimized performance factors under the generalized unbalanced operating conditions.

  • The relationship between the isothermal age-hardening behavior and the phase transformation in the commercial dental Au-Ag-Cu-Pd alloy was investigated Age-hardening was mostly attributed to the lattice distortions of the supersaturated w phase resulting from the transformation to the metastable phasel which were more distinct at lower aging temperature. The lattice distortions resulting from the transformation of the metastable phases to the equilibrium phases also made a contribution to the age-hardening.

  • Thc CCD earth image experiment(CEIE) is one of the main payload of the KITSAT-1. Since it was launched on Age. 11, 1992, the CEIE has taken more than 500 images on the earth surface world-wide so far. An image from the space is very different from a feature on the real Earth surface due to various radiometric and geometric distortions. Preprocessing to remove those distortions has to take place before the image data are processed and analyzed further for various applications. This paper summarizes the result of the operation of the CEIE and describes the procedure to perform preprocessing including radiometric and geometric correction.

  • Using a coupled thermal-mechanical analysis, the dynamic distortion of the ventilated disk brakes has been presented for a high-speed train. The offset ratio between the maximum and minimum values of the thermal distortions has been analyzed as a function of a braking number. The computed FEM results show that the offset ratios in radial direction are much greater than those of circumferentially distorted components. This means that the axial distortions in radial direction may dominantly produce thermally caused wears and cracks at the rubbing surfaces.

  • Digital watermarking techniques are widely applied to protect the integrity and copyright of digital content. In a majority of the literature for watermarking techniques, the watermarked image often causes some distortions after embedding a watermark. For image-quality-concerned users, the distortions from a watermarked image are unacceptable. In this article, we propose a removable watermarking scheme that can restore an original-like image and resist signal-processing attacks to protect the ownership of an image by utilizing the property of singular value decomposition (SVD). The experimental results reveal that the proposed scheme meets the requirements of watermarking robustness, and also reestablishes an image like the original with average PSNR values of 59.07 dB for reconstructed images.

  • One of the biggest problems of skeletonization is the occurrence of distortions at the junction point of the final binary image. At the junction area, a single point usually becomes a small stroke, and the corresponding trajectory task, as well as the OCR, consequently becomes more complicated. We therefore propose an adaptive post-processing method that uses an adaptive threshold technique to correct the distortions. Our proposed method transforms the distorted segments into a single point so that they are as similar to the original image as possible, and this improves the static handwriting images after the skeletonization process. Further, we attained promising results regarding the usage of the enhanced skeletonized images in other applications, thereby proving the expediency and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • Polar fomat algorithm (PFA) was derived from medical imaging theory, known as back projection, to process synthetic aperture radar(SAR) data. The difference between the operating condition of SAR and back projection assumption makes two distortions. First, the focusing performance of PFA is degraded in proportion to distances from the scene center. Second, the geometric accuracy in SAR images is distorted. Several methods were introduced to mitigate the distortions, but some disadvantages, such as the geometric discontinuity, are arisen when sub-images are combined. This paper proposes the novel method to compensate the geometric distortion with chirp Z-transform (CZT). This method corrects precisely the geometric errors without any problems, because a whole image can be processed all at once.
