  • The major difficulty in distillation column control lies in executing the set point tracking and the disturbance rejection, because of continuous changes in model order and dead time. For that, generalized predictive control(GPC) was applied to distillation column control. Recursive least square method was used to adjust the changes of model order and dead time. Quadratic progamming(QP) was used to solve the constraint problems in control action and the rate of control action. As a result of the simulation on the dynamic simulator(SPEEDUP) and the experiment on pilot plant, the ability of the set point tracking and the disturbance rejection was acceptable to apply to the real distillation column.

  • A method was developed to detect total mutagenicity of fried fish for S. typhimurium TA98, using Ames assay. Method described herein circumvented problems associated with the sample preparation for Ames assay, i.e., a multi-purification step of sample and interference with solvent residuals. Experiment A, the best method developed in the present study, consisted of two important steps: pH adjustment of the aqueous sample solution from fried fish samples to remove impurities, and simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) for partially purified samples to remove volatile compounds from solvents. The procedure and results were described as below. Fillet of gizzard shad (Konosirus punctatus) fish sample fried for 10 min each side on the temperature-controlled fry-pan (210$\circ$C) was homogenized in an aqueous acidic solution (pH 2) with a homogenizer, followed by filtration through Celite. The tiltrate (pH 2), removed some impurities by extraction with chloroform:methanol (2:1, v/v) mixture, was adjusted pH to 10 and then centrifuged to remove precipitate. The ethylacetate extract from the tiltrate of pH 10 was rotoevaporated and purified by SDE apparatus for 2 hours. Experiment A revealed significantly higher revertants (1928 per 25 g fried sample) than other Experiment (B, C, or D) tested. Experiment A gave good results in the mutagenicity test of fried fish sample with few purification steps using only 25 g fried sample and 650 ml of solvents; and thus this method could be a useful tool for the screening the mutagenicity or antimutagenicity of other foods as well.

  • This study investigated effects of physical and chemical cleaning methods on the initial flux recovery of fouled membrane in membrane distillation process. A laboratory scale direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) experiment was performed to treat digested livestock wastewater with 3.89 mg/L suspended solids, 874.7 mg/L COD, 543.7 mg/L nitrogen, 15.6 mg/L total phosphorus, and pH of 8.6. A hydrophobic PVDF membrane with an average pore size of $0.22{\mu}m$ and a porosity of 75 % was installed inside a direct contact type membrane distillation module. The temperature difference between feed and permeate side was maintained at $40^{\circ}C$ with the feed and permeate stream velocity of 0.18 m/s. The results showed that the permeate flux decreased from $22.1L{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ to $19.0L{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ after 75 hours of distillation. The fouled membrane was cleaned first by physical flushing and consecutively by chemicals with NaOCl and citric acid. After the physical cleaning the flux was recovered to 92 % as compared with the initial clean water flux of the virgin membrane. Then 94 % of the flux was recovered after cleaning by 2,000 ppm NaOCl for 90 minutes and finally 97 % of flux recovered after 3 % citric acid for 90 minutes. SEM-EDS and FT-IR analysis results presented that the foulants on the membrane surface were removed effectively after each cleaning step. The contact angle measurement showed that the hydrophobicity of the membrane surface was also restored gradually after each cleaning step to reach nearly the same hydrophobicity level as the virgin membrane.

  • A multi-effect air gap membrane distillation (ME-AGMD) module for pesticide wastewater treatment is studied with internal heat recovery, sensible heat of brine recovery, number of stages and the use of fresh feed as cooling water in a single module is implemented in this study. A flat sheet polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) membrane was used in the 4-stage ME-AGMD module. The maximum value of permeate flux could reach $38.62L/m^2h$ at feed -coolant water temperature difference about $52^{\circ}C$. The performance parameter of the module like, specific energy consumption and gain output ratio (GOR) was investigated for the module with and without heat recovery. Also, the module performance was characterized with respect to the separation efficiency of several important water quality parameters. The removal efficiency of the module was found to be >98.8% irrespective water quality parameters. During the experiment the membrane fouling was caused due to the deposition of the salt/crystal on the membrane surface. The membrane fouling was controlled by membrane module washing cycle 9 h and also by acidification of the feed water (pH=4) using 0.1M HCl solution.

  • This study was accomplished to get the foundation design data of VMD(Vacuum Membrane Distillation) system for Solar Thermal VMD plant. VMD experiment was designed to evaluate thermal performance of VMD using PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) hollow fiber hydrophobic membranes. The total membrane surface area in a VMD module is $5.3m^2$. Experimental equipments to evaluate VMD system consists of various parts such as VMD module, heat exchanger, heater, storage tank, pump, flow meter, micro filter. The experimental conditions to evaluate VMD module were salt concentration, temperature, flow rate of feed sea water. Salt concentration of feed water were used by aqueous NaCl solutions of 25g/l, 35g/l and 45g/l concentration. As a result, increase in permeate flux of VMD module is due to the increasing feed water temperature and feed water flow rate. Also, decrease in permeate flux of VMD module is due to increasing salinity of feed water. VMD module required about 590 kWh/day of heating energy to produce $1m^3/day$ of fresh water.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the problems on the fractional distillation experiments in the middle school science textbooks based on the 6th curriculum and to suggest an efficient experiment method for the middle school students. The first step was the classification of the experiments in 8 science textbooks according to heating apparatus and liquid mixtures. The second step was doing each experiment 3 times followed by the experimental process in the textbooks. The third step was developing the alternative experiments for solving the problems found in the second step. The heating method used in the alternative experiments were direct heating, oil bath, and heating mantle. The results of the second step showed that the direct heating experiment of branched round flask was more close to the theoretical prediction than the experiment of water bath heating of branched test tube. Also the direct heating experiment of thermally insulated branched round flask was better than the result of the experiment which was not insulated. The results of the third step showed that the experiment using heating mantle regulated heating power by observing the temperature of distillate gave the closest result to the theoretical prediction. From the above results, it is concluded that the experiment using branched test-tube with water bath heating is not adequate for the fractional distillation and an alternative experiment using insulated branched round flask with heating mantle regulated heating power during experiment is recommended.

  • This study proposes a topic distillation algorithm that ranks the relevant sites selected from retrieved web pages, and evaluates the performance of the algorithm. The algorithm calculates the topic score of a site using its hierarchical structure. The TREC .GOV test collection and a set of TREC-2004 queries for topic distillation task are used for the experiment. The experimental results showed the algorithm returned at least 2 relevant sites in top ten retrieval results. We peformed an in-depth analysis of the relevant sites list provided by TREC-2004 to find out that the definition of topic distillation was not strictly applied in selecting relevant sites. When we re-evaluated the retrieved sites/sub-sites using the revised list of relevant sites, the performance of the proposed algorithm was improved significantly.

  • The electrorefining process is generally composed of two recovery steps in pyroprocessing - the deposit of uranium onto a solid cathode and the recovery of the remaining uranium and TRU elements simultaneously by a liquid cadmium cathode. The liquid cathode processing is necessary to separate cadmium from the actinide elements since the actinide deposits are dissolved or precipitated in a liquid cathode. Distillation process was employed for the cathode processing. It is very important to avoid a splattering of cadmium during evaporation due to the high vapor pressure. In this study, a multi-layer porous round cover was proposed and examined to develop a splatter shield for the Cd distillation crucible. Cadmium vapor can be released through the holes of the shield, whereas liquid drops can be collected in the multiple hemisphere. The collected drops flow on the round surface of the cover and flow down into the crucible. The crucible cover was fabricated and tested in the Cd distiller. The cover was made with three stainless steel round plates with a diameter of 33.50 mm. The distance between the hemispheres and the diameter of the holes are 10 and 1 mm, respectively. About 40 grams of Cd and about 4 grams of Bi was distilled at a reduced pressure for two hours at $470^{\circ}C$. After the Cd distillation experiment, cadmium was not detected and more than 90 % of Bi remained in the ICP-OES analysis. Therefore the crucible cover can be a candidate for the splatter shield of the Cd distillation crucible. Further development of the crucible cover is necessary for the decision of the optimum cover geometry and the operating conditions of the Cd distiller.

  • Knowledge distillation (KD) is a model lightening technology that transfers the knowledge of deep models to light models. Most KD methods have been developed for classification models, and there have been few KD studies in the field of super-resolution (SR). In this paper, various KD methods are applied to an SR model and their performance is compared. Specifically, we modified the loss function to apply each KD method to the SR model and conducted an experiment to learn a student model that was about 27 times lighter than the teacher model and to double the image resolution. Through the experiment, it was confirmed that some KD methods were not valid when applied to SR models, and that the performance was the highest when the relational KD and the traditional KD methods were combined.

  • The effects of dissolved inorganic and organic matter in seawater and the characteristics of fouling on the membrane surface were investigated within membrane distillation (MD) process. The changes of the membrane flux of PE and PVDF hollow fiber membranes under natural and synthetic seawater were compared with given variances of temperature. The flux of both membranes under the synthetic seawater, without any organic matter, were higher than that of the natural seawater, indicating the organic fouling on the membrane surface. The surface of the membrane was analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to examine the fouling. The experiment with organics has shown the formation of thin film over the membrane surface, while the experiment with inorganics has shown only the formation of inorganic crystals. The results indicated the organic matter as the major foulants and that the organics affected the formation of the crystals. Permeate water conductivity of all conditions verified the quality of the water to be better if not similar to that of RO.
