  • In this research, the finite element analysis of piezocone penetration and dissipation tests have been conducted using the anisotropic elastoplastic-viscoplastic bounding surface model in the Updated Lagrangian reference frame for the large deformation and finite strain nu\ature of piezocone penetration. Accordingly, virtual work equation and corresponding finite element equations have been reformulated. Theory of mixtures has been incorporated to explain the behavior of the sol. It has been observed that the viscoplastic part of the soil model affected the whole formulation. The results of the finite element analysis have been compared and investigated with the experimental results. The formulations and the results are described in part 'I' and part 'II', respectively.

  • The performance enhancement of various damping systems from natural hazards has become an highly important issue in engineering field. In this paper, ENTA hysteretic dampers were tested under cyclic loadings to evaluate their performance in terms of ductility and energy dissipation. The test results showed that the hysteretic dampers are effective damping systems to enhance the buildings performance for remodeling and retrofit of buildings. Also, the hysteretic dampers were modeled in FEM(Finite Element Method) structural analysis program. As comparing the computer modeling and the experiment, this study model reflects the nonlinear behavior of steel and derives the hysteresis loop.

  • This paper investigates the effect of ductile deformation behavior of high performance hybrid fiber-reinforced cement composites (HPHFRCCs) on the shear behavior of coupling beams to lateral load reversals. The matrix ductility and the reinforcement layout were the main variables of the tests. Three short coupling beams with two different reinforcement arrangements and matrixes were tested. They were subjected to cyclic loading by a suitable experimental setup. All specimens were characterized by a shear span-depth ratio of 1.0. The reinforcement layouts consisted of a classical scheme and diagonal scheme without confining ties. The effects of matrix ductility on deflections, strains, crack widths, crack patterns, failure modes, and ultimate shear load of coupling beams have been examined. The combination of a ductile cementitious matrix and steel reinforcement is found to result in improved energy dissipation capacity, simplification of reinforcement details, and damage-tolerant inelastic deformation behavior. Test results showed that the HPFRCC coupling beams behaved better than normal reinforced concrete control beams. These results were produced by HPHFRCC's tensile deformation capacity, damage tolerance and tensile strength.

  • The small height to depth ratio column dominated by shear after tension steel yielded and the energy dissipation capacity reduce remarkably due to the affection of axial force. This procedure incur in the plastic hinge region and not in all of the region at the same time but from somewhere where the energy was concentrated. This study was reported about the variation of length of the plastic hinge under cyclic loading of the RC columns through the test.

  • This thesis investigates vibration response characteristics of building frames in which dampers are installed. The frames belong to passively vibration-controlled. Structures which utilizes energy dissipation of mechanical dampers provided in the structure. In this thesis, a turbulent flow damper sealed by visco-elastic material was dealt with as the device of passive vibration control. To investigate the resisting force characteristics of the damper, harmonic vibratration tests were carried out. Based on the test results, a theoretical model of the damper resistance was presented and a method of identifying the model parameters was proposed. Shaking table tests of the frame with and without the dampers were carried out and the effectiveness of the damper was examined. The response of the frame with the dampers was reduced to 1/2 or 1/3 of the cases without the damper.

  • In damage investigation of building structures suffering from earthquake, estimation of residual seismic capacity is essential in order to access the safety of the building against aftershocks and to judge the necessity of repair and restoration. It has been proposed that an evaluation method for post-earthquake seismic capacity of reinforced concrete buildings based. on the residual energy dissipation capacity (the residual seismic capacity ratio )in lateral force-displacement curve of structural members. The proposed method was adopted in the Japanese 'Damage Level Classification Standard' revised in 200l. To evaluate the residual seismic capacity of RC column, experimental tests with positive and negative cyclic loading was carried out using RC building column specimen. Parameters used by the experiment are deformability and member proportion. From the test results, it is appropriated that the residual seismic capacity of RC buildings damaged by earthquakes is evaluated using the method in the Guideline.

  • Diagnostic tests were performed on six high voltage motors. These tests included ac current, dissipation factor(tan6) and partial discharge(PD) magnitude. The rewind of motor stator insulation at rated voltage is assessed by the results of these tests. After completing the diagnostic tests, the stator windings of motors were subjected to gradually increasing ac voltage, until the insulation punctured. No. 1 and No.2 motors(4.16 kV) failed near rated voltage of 12.3 kV and 14.2 kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage of No.3 and No.4 motors(6.6 kV) was 17.6 kV and 17.8 kV, respectively. These motors are higher that expected for good quality coils in 6.6 kV class motors.

  • A new multifunctional sandwich composite was investigated in this paper. The honeycomb core of this composite was filled with viscoelastic material in order to obtain an improved impact performance. The fillings in the honeycomb cells was hoped to provide the act of energy dissipation in this combined material system. Low-velocity drop-weight test was set up to the specimens with various stacked carbon/epoxy laminate facesheets, $[0/90]_{4s},\;[0/45/-45/90]_{2s}$. Load and energy history were checked and compared for the both groups of specimens, with and without rubber fillings. Further, the damaged faces were inspected visually by ultrasonic C-scan.

  • This paper presents a study of heat dissipation away from the fuel combustion of a marine diesel engine. These engines are operated for long periods under high load conditions: so cooling systems are necessary for radiation and control of the high temperature levels. In the study, each component of the water cooling system was developed to achieve improvements in cooling and safety. Heat transfer considerations and arrangement design for the components were important and an intercooler and exhaust manifold incorporated. An optimization of the cooling water's flow path was achieved subject to the need for convenient maintenance. The 750Ps marine diesel engine was used for performance testing of the cooling system. The test results showed adequate cooling performance improvement.

  • A two-dimensional stepped wall jet was numerically investigated by applying three different models : One is the standard k-.epsilon. and the other is the modified k-.epsilon. model which takes account of the streamline curvature effect by modifying the Reynolds shear stress and a source term in the dissipation equation, and a third is curvature dependent third-order correlation model. In order to test the influences of the numerical result, both the upwind scheme and the skew-upwind scheme were sued for the computations. By comparing the numerical results with available experiments, it was found that the modified k-.epsilon. model gives best overall prediction accuracy only when the numerical diffusion is eliminated by using the skew-upwind scheme. The numerical scheme was found to have more pronounced effect on the accuracy of the turbulence computation than the turbulence models.
