Titanium (Ti) metal and its alloys are desirable materials for ship hulls and other ocean structures because of their high strength, corrosion-resistance and light weight properties. And light weight and corrosion-resistant aluminum (Al) is the ideal metal for shipbuilding. The joining of Ti and Al dissimilar metals is one of the effective methode to reduce weight of the structures. Ti and Al have great differences in materials properties, and intermetallic compounds such as $Ti_3Al$, TiAl, $TiAl_3$ are easily formed at the contacting surface between Ti and Al. Thus, dissimilar welding and joining of Ti and Al are considered to be very difficult. However, it was clarified that ultra-high speed welding could suppress the formation of intermetallic compounds in the previous study. Results of tensile shear strength increases with an increase in the welding speed, and therefore extremely high welding speed (50 m/min) is good to dissimilar weldability for Ti and Al. In this study, therefore, full penetration dissimilar lap welding of Ti (upper) - Al (lower) and Al (upper) - Ti (lower) with single-mode fiber laser was tried at ultra-high welding speed, and the microstructure of the interface zones in the dissimilar Al and Ti weld beads was investigated.
The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between austenitic stainless steels (STS316)/IF steels and ferritic stainless steels (STS430)/IF steels was investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensile-shear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The comparison of these results was described in terms of fracture behavior. Compared with the weld lobe of similar metal joints, dissimilar metal joints (STS430/IF) had reduced weld current range. However, the weld lobe of STS316/IF steel joint showed increased weld current range. This is because the dilution of chemical composition in the molten weld pool suppressed the heat input being caused by Joule heat with current flow through the samples. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite and mixture of ferrite and martensite for austenitic stainless steel/IF steel and ferritic stainless steel/IF steel combination, respectively. The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the austenitic and ferritic stainless steel sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The predicted microstructure by using the Schaeffler diagram was well matched with experimental results. After peel test, the fracture was initiated from heat affected zone of ferritic stainless steel sheet side, however the final fracture was propagated into the IF steel sheet side due to its lower strength.
This study was investigated to develop process technology of laser cladding with austenite stainless steel for Weld Inlay repair of dissimilar metal weld in reactor vessel in/outlet nozzles. Weld Inlay experiments were performed by laser cladding repair system consisting of common manipulator, laser apparatus and welding process scheduler, etc. Single pass welding experiments were conducted in order to obtain the optimum welding process parameters for filler wires of ER309L and Alloy 52M before multi-layer laser cladding. Based on the above obtained results, multi-layer laser cladding experiments were carried out, and welding qualities for weld specimens were estimated by PT, OM, SEM and EDS analysis. Consequently, it was revealed that multi-layer laser cladding on austenite stainless steel using filler wires of ER309L and Alloy 52M could be possible to meet ASME Code standard without any weld defect.

Titanium (Ti) metal and its alloys are desirable materials for ship hulls and other structures because of their high strength, light weight and corrosion-resistance. And light weight and corrosion-resistant aluminum (Al) is the ideal metal for shipbuilding. The joining of Ti and Al dissimilar metals is one of the effective measures to reduce weight of the structures or to save rare metals. Ti and Al have great differences in materials properties, and intermetallic compounds such as Ti3Al, TiAl, TiAl3 are easily formed at the contacting surface between Ti and Al. Thus, welding or joining of Ti and Al is considered to be extremely difficult. However, it was clarified that ultra-high speed welding could suppress the formation of intermetallic compounds in the previous study. Results of tensile shear strength increases with an increase in the welding speed, and therefore extremely high welding speed (50m/min in this study) is good to dissimilar weldability for Ti and Al.
Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between alloy steel ASTM A387 Gr. 91 and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with Flux cored arc welding(FCAW) have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, mechanical strength, chemical analysis by EDS as well as corrosion test. Three heat inputs of 15.0, 22.5, 30.0kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with E91T1-B9C wire. Post-weld heat treatment was carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 h. Based on microstructural examination, tempered martensite and lower bainite were formed in first layer of weld metal. The amount of tempered martensite was decreased and the amount of lower bainite was increased with increasing heat input and layer. Heat affected zone of alloy steel showed the highest hardness due to the formation of tempered Martensite and lower Bainite. Tensile strengths of dissimilar welds decreased with increasing heat inputs. Dissimilar welds seemed to have a good hot cracking resistance due to the low HCS index below 4. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals showed that the corrosion rate increased with increasing heat inputs due to the increase of the amount of lower Bainite.
The use of light-weight Al alloys in the automotive industry is increasing to meet requirements for fuel efficiency and emission reduction. Joining Al alloy to the conventional steel sheet is also very important issue with the increased use of Al alloy, and several joining processes have been introduced to enhance joining strength between dissimilar metals. This paper deals with a galvanic corrosion in the dissimilar metal joining. Salt spray tests up to 2000 hours were conducted on a self-piercing rivet, spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints, and cross-sections and tensile shear strength according the salt spray duration were analyzed at every 500-hour. Self-piercing rivet joint had relative low initial strength but the joint strength did not change regardless of the salt spray duration. The strength of other joints (spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints) decreased with the increase of salt spray duration and the corrosion behaviour of each joint was discussed.
Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between ASTM Type 316L and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with FCAW were evaluated in terms of microstructure, ferrite content, EDS analysis, hardness, tensile strength, impact toughness and corrosion resistance. Three heat inputs of 10.4, 16.9, 23.4kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with E309LMoT1-1 wire. Microstructure of dissimilar weld metals consisted of mostly vermicular type of ${\delta}$-ferrite and some lathy type of ${\delta}$-ferrite, and ${\delta}$-ferrite was transformed into globular type in reheated zone. In all conditions, weld metals were solidified on FA solidification mode. Based on the EDS analysis of weld metals, All Creq/Nieq values were in the range of FA solidification mode, and it was decreased with increasing heat inputs whereas it was increased with increasing layers. The amount of ${\delta}$-ferrite was decreased with increasing heat input due to the difference of cooling rate, and it was increased with increasing layers. Accordingly, hardness and tensile strength of dissimilar metals weld joints was decreased with increasing heat input while impact energy was increased with increasing heat input. Corrosion test of dissimilar metals weld joints showed that weight gain rate of heat input 10.4kJ/cm was the greatest, and that of three heat inputs became constant after certain time.
Increase of the requirements on quality of welded structures necessitates the improvement of known inspection methods and the introduction of progressive new techniques. Non-destructive methods are the most advanced, but there are considerable difficulties in using the methods of radiography with electromagnetic rays and ultrasonic testing in the inspection of dissimilar metal friction welds, because their physical and mechanical properties are changed very rapidly at the interface. The values of simple mechanical test for dissimilar metal friction welds have always been dubious, as the strength of the bond is often greater than that of the softer materials being jointed. Thus, in this paper some conventional mechanical testing methods are examined in an attempt to determine a technique for dissimilar metal friction welds, which will give a reliable quantitative indication of the weld quality. From the considered static and dynamic testing methods the impact bending test on unnotched and notched specimens are the most sensitive to find out the small joining defects in the interface.
Although the fatigue design curve of ASME Code has enough margin with respect to alternating stress and cycles, the welding residual stress(WRS) should be included in fatigue analysis. In this paper, WRS distribution in a nozzle with dissimilar metal weldment was obtained by finite element analysis and was added in fatigue analysis. The fatigue analysis was performed by following the ASME Code including thermal and stress analysis applying with postulated 30 transient conditions. The calculated results of a cumulative fatigue usage factors(CUF) were compared for the case of the models with or without WRS effects. The results showed that the CUF at weldment and heat affected zone was affected by the WRS.
In this paper, crack propagation analyses in the inner diameter (ID) repair weld of the dissimilar metal weldment of a nozzle were performed using a finite element alternating method (FEAM). To calculate the theoretical solution for the crack tip stress intensity factor, a weak type singular integral equation consisted of crack surface traction and dislocation density function was constructed and solved in conjunction with the FEAM. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element nozzle model was prepared and ID repair welding was simulated. An initial crack, 10% depth of weld thickness, was assumed and crack propagation trajectory from the initial crack to the 75% depth of thickness was calculated using the FEAM. Crack growth versus time curve was also calculated and compared with the curves obtained from ASME code method. With the method constructed in this paper, crack propagation trajectory and crack growth time were calculated automatically and effectively.
