  • We proposed a soft-lithographic method for aligning a liquid crystal (LC) in patterned azimuthal orientations. It is demonstrated that a thermoplastic polystyrene layer is patterned from a thermally stable polyimide layer via pressure-assisted capillary force lithography, which provides multidirectional LC alignment condition simply followed by a unidirectional rubbing process.

  • We describe the 3D/2D convertible color display based on modified integral imaging. In the proposed method a color liquid crystal display panel is used as a transmission-type display panel and enables a color 3D/2D convertible display system. The principle of the proposed method will be explained and methods to overcome the color dispersion problem will be discussed also.

  • Low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCOs are in production today at sizes ranging from 0.33" for Viewfinders to 17" for LCD TVs with 21.3" recently demonstrated. Because of their form factor, resolution, brightness and other benefits, LTPS TFT LCD unit shipments, revenues and capacity are expected to grow rapidly, particularly for mobile applications. However, despite the strong outlook, LTPS TFT LCOs are still faced with numerous challenges from a market and technology perspective. LTPS TFT LCD producers were surveyed on which of the current challenges were the most problematic among other questions.

  • Optical architecture and experimental results on low cost multiview autostereoscopic projection display are presented. The display, containing only one high resolution projection panel and only one projection lens is capable of displaying multiview autostereoscopic images. Key components, applied in the display are segmented mirror for splitting the projection beam and one-dimensional diffuser with slanted axis of diffusion for viewing zone formation. Image distortions, inherent in the display have been compensated with opposite sign pre-distortion of projected perspective images.

  • A system for high-resolution analysis of defective elementary cell (R, G or B) on Flat Panel Display (FPD) is described. Based on multiple acquisitions of low-resolution shifted images of the display, our system doesn't require a high-resolution sensor neither tedious alignment of the display, and will remain up to date even facing an important increase of the display dimensions. Our process, highly automated and thus flexible and robust, is expected to perform a full analysis in less than 60s. It is mainly intended for production tests and display classification by manufacturers.

  • We will report the latest developments in light emitting polymer (LEP) systems developed at CDT. Device performance for spin coated and ink jet printed systems will be described which are state-of-the-art. We will also report on novel driving schemes for both active and passive addressed LEP displays. These drive schemes extend system lifetime as well as lowering power consumption.

  • LGE developed and demonstrated the first 60-inch full color AC plasma display panel with the 1365 ${\times}$ 768 resolution. Both Sol-gel and E-beam method have been tried for MgO layer, and photolithography has been used for electrodes and phosphor layer to fabricate a 60-inch panel. Selective Erase, Selective Write, Address Display Separate, and Address While Display driving scheme have been tested. Its luminance and contrast ratio is about $550\;cd/m^2$ and 500:1, respectively.

  • We have developed the LCD Simulator, which is called "ProLCD", in order to reduce time and efforts for the design and analysis of LCDs. We describe the numerical models implementing the computation of LC directors and electro-optics, the graphic user interface and the visualization modules. Many applications show that ProLCD is a very useful, interactive design tool with good reliability.

  • A variety of power reduction technologies is introduced and the benefits of the technologies are discussed. PenTile$^{(R)}$ DBLC (Dynamic Brightness LED Control) combined with SABC (Sensor-Based Adaptive Brightness Control) enables to achieve the average LED power consumption to one third. The panel power reduction of 25% can be achieved with low power driving technology, ALS (Active Level Shifter). MIP (Memory In Pixel) is expected to be useful in transflective display because the whole display area can be utilized in reflective mode with power consumption of 1mW.
