In this paper, a conventional refined plastic hinge analysis is improved to account for the effects of local buckling and lateral-torsional buckling. The degradation of flexural strength caused by these effects is implicitly considered using practical LRFD equation. The second-order effect is captured using stability functions to minimize modeling and solution time. An incremental-iterative scheme based on the generalized displacement control method is employed to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equations. A computer program is developed to predict the second-order inelastic behavior of space steel frames. To verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed program, the obtained results are compared with the existing results and those generated using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS. It can be concluded that the proposed program proves to be a reliable and effective tool for daily use in engineering design.
A general framework for the nonlinear geometric analysis of elastic space trusses is presented. Both total Lagrangian and finite incremental formulations are derived from the three key ingredients of statics, kinematics and constitutive law. Particular features of the general methodology include the preservation of static-kinematic duality through the concept of fictitious forces and deformations, and an exact description for arbitrarily large displacements, albeit small strain, that can be specialized to any order of geometrical nonlinearity. As for the numerical algorithm, we consider specifically the finite incremental case and suggest the use of a conventional, simple and flexible arc-length based method. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate and validate the accuracy of the approach.

In this study, collapse behavior of frame composed of thin-walled rectangular tube is investigated. Considering the collapse of frame, the bending and compression members undergo large deformation. The stiffness of the compound element is obtained from analytical moment-rotation relationship and approximated load-deflection relationsh- ip of thin-walled rectangular tube. A computer program is developed for the large deformation analysis of frame. An incremental displacement method is used in the program and at each incremental stage, the stiffness matrix of the total structure is checked with the state of each element for bending and compression.
A novel finite element model based on the incremental endochronic theory with the effect of temperature was developed in this study to explore the deformed behaviors of a flexible pavement material. Three mesh systems and two loading steps were used in the calculation process for a specimen of three-dimensional circular cylinder. Computational results in the case of an uni-axial compression test for temperatures at $20^{\circ}C$ and at $40^{\circ}C$ were compared with available experimental measurements to verify the ability of developing numerical scheme. The isotropic response and the deviatoric response due to the thermal effect were presented from deformations in different profiles and displacement plots for the entire specimen. The characteristics of changing asphalt concrete material under a specified loading condition might be seen clearly from the numerical results, and might provide an useful information in the field of road engineering.
This study deals with simple solutions for a spherical or circular opening excavated in elastic-brittle plastic rock mass compatible with a linear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) or a nonlinear Hoek-Brown (H-B) yield criterion. Based on total strain approach, the closed-form solutions of stresses and displacement are derived simultaneously for circular and spherical openings using original H-B and M-C yield criteria. Two simple numerical procedures are proposed for the solution of generalized H-B and M-C yield criteria. Based on incremental approach, the similarity solution is derived for circular and spherical openings using generalized H-B and M-C yield criteria. The classical Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the first-order ordinary differential equations. Using three data sets for M-C and H-B models, the results of the radial displacements, the spreading of the plastic radius with decreasing pressure, and the radial and circumferential stresses in the plastic region are compared. Excellent agreement among the solutions is obtained for all cases of spherical and circular openings. The importance of the use of proper initial values in the similarity solution is discussed.
This paper presents a modified arc-length method for the nonlinear finite element analysis of a structure which is loaded in incremental and fixed forces, simultaneously. The main idea of the method is to separate the displacement term by the constant force from that by the incremental force. Presented method is applied to the nonlinear analysis of isotropic shell structures separately loaded by lateral pressure or compression, and shows the excellent agreement with previous results. As an illustrative example of the applicability of the present algorithm, a parametric study is performed on the nonlinear buckling analysis of composite cylindrical panels under the combined load of the incremented compression and the constant lateral pressure.

A finite element procedure to estimate ultimate strength of space frames considering spread of plasticity is presented. The improved displacement field is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations. All the nonlinear terms due to bending and torsional moment as well as axial force are precisely considered. The concept of plastic hinge is introduced and the incremental load/displacement method is applied for the elasto-plastic analysis. The initial yield surface is defined based on the residual stress and the full plastification surface is considered under the combined action of axial force, bending and torsional moments. The elasto-plastic stiffness matrices are derived using the flow rule and the normality condition of the limit function. Finite element solutions for ultimate strength of space frames are compared with available solutions and experimental results.

This paper focuses on the dynamic responses of a tracked vehicle crawling on extremely cohesive soft soil, each side of which is composed of two parallel tracks. The tracked vehicle consisted of 2 bodies. One body is the tracked vehicle body, which is assumed to be a rigid body with 6 DOFs. The other body is the buoy body. The two bodies are connected by a revolute joint. In order to evaluate the travelling performance of a 7 DOFs vehicle, a dynamic analysis program for the tracked vehicle was developed using Newmark's method and the incremental-iterative method. The effects of road wheels on the track and soil are not taken into account. A terra-mechanics model of extremely cohesive soft soil is implemented in form of relationships: normal pressure to sinkage, shear resistance to shear displacement, and dynamic sinkage to shear displacement. Pressure-sinkage relationship and shear displacement-stress relationship should represent the non-linear characteristics of extremely soft soil. Especially, since the shear resistance of soft soil is very sensitive to shear displacement, spatial distribution of shear displacement occurring at the contact area of the tracks should be calculated precisely. The proposed program is developed in FORTRAN.
Masonry constructions exhibit uncertain behaviors under dynamic effects such as seismic action. Complex issues arise in the idealization of structural systems of buildings having different material types and mechanical properties. In this study, the structural behavior of a vaulted masonry building constructed using full clay brick and lime-based mortar and sitting on consecutive arches was investigated by experimental and numerical approaches. The dimensions of the structure built in the laboratory were 391 × 196 cm, and its height was 234 cm. An incremental repetitive loading was applied to the prototype construction model. Along the gradually increasing loading pattern, the load-displacement curves of the masonry structure were obtained with the assistance of eight linear displacement transducers. In addition, crack formation areas, and relevant causes of its formation were determined. The experimental model was idealized using the finite element method, and numerical analyses were performed for the area considered as linear being under similar loading effect. From the linear analyses, the displacement values and stress distribution of the numerical model were obtained. In addition, the effects of tie members, frequently being used in the supports of curved load-bearing elements, on the structural behavior were examined. Consequently, the experimental and numerical analysis results were comparatively evaluated.

This paper discusses the theoretical researches subject to elastic buckling problems of the structures. The purpose is to ensure the characteristic of buckling be true by arc-length method and the finite element method. The difficulties in processes calculating the equilibrium curve after buckling is to get the equilibrium owe near singular point at which the determinant of stiffness matrix is zero. The purpose of the load-displacement curve is to determine the buckling load of the structure, and further to get the information about the characteristic after buckling. Here, this paper expresses the incremental solution at particular point by the linear combination of both homogeneous mode and particular mode, then uses the method which gets the unknown parameter including this function, through trial-and-error method including modified N-R convergence process. Finally, this paper describes the multiple bifurcation of truss dome as the numerical examples according to this algorithm.
