  • As industry is developed, the faster transportation of freight train is demanded. The optimum design of a structure requires the determination of economical member size and shape of a structure which will satisfy the design conditions and the functions. In this study, it is attempted to minimize the dead weight of bogie frame. From the numerical results in the shape and size optimization of the bogie frame, it is known that the weight can be reduced up to 17.45% with the displacement, stress, first natural frequency and critical buckling-load constraints. The first natural frequency and the critical buckling load of the optimized model is larger than that of the lowest design value. Stress and displacement conditions are also satisfied within the design conditions. From the results, the optimal model is stable and useful for the improvement of railway carriages.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear static and free vibration analysis of Euler-Bernoulli composite beam model reinforced by functionally graded single-walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) with initial geometrical imperfection under uniformly distributed load using finite element method (FEM) is investigated. The governing equations of equilibrium are derived by the Hamilton's principle and von Karman type nonlinear strain-displacement relationships are employed. Also the influences of various loadings, amplitude of the waviness, UD, USFG, and SFG distributions of carbon nanotube (CNT) and different boundary conditions on the dimensionless transverse displacements and nonlinear frequency ratio are presented. It is seen that with increasing load, the displacement of USFG beam under force loads is more than for the other states. Moreover it can be seen that the nonlinear to linear natural frequency ratio decreases with increasing aspect ratio (h/L) for UD, USFG and SFG beam. Also, it is shown that at the specified value of (h/L), the natural frequency ratio increases with the increasing the values amplitude of waviness while the dimensionless nonlinear to linear maximum deflection decreases. Moreover, with considering the amplitude of waviness, the stiffness of Euler-Bernoulli beam model reinforced by FG-CNT increases. It is concluded that the R parameter increases with increasing of volume fraction while the rate of this parameter decreases. Thus one can be obtained the optimum value of FG-CNT volume fraction to prevent from resonance phenomenon.

  • Two kinds of piezoelectric actuator are applied to the valve for controlling the direction, the flow and the pressure of the fluid. One is a stack type piezoelectric actuator which has very fast response characteristics but very tiny displacement. The other is a bender type piezoelectric actuator which has also fast response characteristics but lower than the stack type one, and has longer displacement than the stack type one. So, the bender type piezoelectric actuator has advantage to apply to the valve for controlling a large amount of flow and fast on-off operating. In this study, the bender type piezoelectric pneumatic valve for color sorter is designed and fabricated. The new type high speed piezo valve with the both side supporting mechanism for high operating frequency and high reliability is discussed for separating the foreign body from the grains. Finally, the performance characteristics of a fabricated valve are analyzed and the frequency characteristics are also discussed for substituting the conventional type solenoid actuator.

  • Although piezoelectric bimorph that is using as the sensor in medical and industrial measurement has large displacement, it has problems including efficiency in generating force, energy convergence, and response. Its application is being limited based on the change in resonance frequency with temperature. In this study, to overcome the disadvantages, PZT piezoelectric ceramics was prepared and produced a parallel type piezoelectric bimorphs. In addition, by using the finite element method. the configuration of piezoelectric bimorph was designed and the displacement of the bimorph based on applied electric pressure and the wave pattern were measured. By analyzing the resonance characteristics of the bimorph in the temperature range of $-60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, an attempt was made to study the operational characteristics and temperature reliability of vortex flowmeter sensor. As a result, the resonance frequency of the bimorph was gradually increased with the temperature from $-60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. The deflection of the bimorph was found to strongly depend on both the applied electric field waveform and the environmental temperature.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the pumping characteristics of diffuser-nozzle based thermopneumatic micropumps with different input voltages and frequencies. In this study, the displacements of the membrane have been obtained changing the input voltage and frequency in load-free state because it is very difficult to measure the displacement of the membrane in an actual load state. It has been found that the amplitude of the membrane displacement increases as the input voltage increases. The pressure head of the thermopneumatic micropump increases almost linearly over some range of the input voltage and decreases almost linearly as the frequency increases. Also, the results show that the thermopneumatic micropump can pump the fluid over a certain input voltage. This study can be utilized as basic data for design and evaluation of thermopneumatic micropumps.

  • This paper presents design of a FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) level meter as well as simulation result of the designed system. The system is designed to measure maximum range of 20m since FMCW radar can be used for measuring short range distance. The distance is measured by analyzing the beat signal which is generated as result of mixing transmitting signal with the reflected received signal. The Fast Fourier Transform is applied to analyze the beat signal for calculating the displacement and Zoom FFT technique is used to minimize measurement error as well as increase the resolution of the measurement. The resolution of the measurement of the designed system in this paper is 2.2mm and bandwidth of 1.024GHz is used for simulation. Thus the simulation results are analyzed and compared in various conditions in order to get a comprehensive idea of frequency resolution and displacement resolution.

  • A piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler, usually used to remove the tartar out of teeth and to amputate the pubis, is a recently popular instrument for dental treatment due to its several merits such as small size, low-electric power, precision and low-cost. It has typically two parts of a tip and vibration system, which is also composed of head, piezoelectric elements and tail-mass. The scaler concentrates its displacement on tip and has commonly a resonance frequency at 25~30 kHz, and in order to improve the performance of the scaler, it is important to standardize the size of the vibration system without tip for high performance because scaler in quality differs according to several tips. In this study, a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was utilized to optimize the structure of ultrasonic scaler in the vibration system. Consequently, this study revealed that influence of several tips on property were minimized and scaler showed good property at the resonance frequency of 28 kHz.

  • This study, analyses the seismic response for a rigid massless square foundation resting on a viscoelastic soil layer limited by rigid bedrock. The foundation is subjected either to externally applied forces or to obliquely incident seismic body or surface harmonic seismic waves P, SV and SH. A 3-D frequency domain BEM formulation in conjunction with the thin layer method (TLM) is adapted here for the solution of elastodynamic problems and used for obtained the seismic response. The mathematical approach is based on the method of integral equations in the frequency domain using the formalism of Green's functions (Kausel and Peck 1982) for layered soil, the impedance functions are calculated by the compatibility condition. In this study, The key step is the characterization of the soil-foundation interaction with the input motion matrix. For each frequency the impedance matrix connects the applied forces to the resulting displacement, and the input motion matrix connects the displacement vector of the foundation to amplitudes of the free field motion. This approach has been applied to analyze the effect of soil-structure interaction on the seismic response of the foundation resting on a viscoelastic soil layer limited by rigid bedrock.

  • Tunnel measurements provide crucial information on the ground stability during the excavation, visualizing the ground behavioral characteristics with quantitative dada. Generally, the frequency of the measurements is greater during the early stage of the tunnelling process and reduced with time. However, there are no quantitative criteria established for either the activities, such as the time, location and frequency of the measurement or the management guidance, especially for the site of subtle and unexpected displacement during the excavation. It is, however, still challenging to assess behavioral characteristics of subtle and unexpected displacement after stabilization. In this study, we propose a new method to assess stability and to analysis the behavioral characteristics of subtle and unexpected displacement after stabilization using statistic control charts of displacements. We also present a test result on the applicability of control chart and CUSUM control chart to measured displacements.

  • The present study investigated the earthquake behavior of R/C structures considering the vertical earthquake motion with the help of a comparative study. For this aim, the linear time-history analyses of a high-rise R/C structure designed according to TSC-2007 requirements were conducted including and excluding the vertical earthquake motion. Earthquake records used in the analyses were selected based on the ratio of vertical peak acceleration to horizontal peak acceleration (V/H). The frequency-domain analyses of the earthquake records were also performed to compare the dominant frequency of the records with that of the structure. Based on the results obtained from the time-history analyses under the earthquake loading with (H+V) and without the vertical earthquake motion (H), the value of the overturning moment and the top-story vertical displacement were found to relatively increase when considering the vertical earthquake motion. The base shear force was also affected by this motion; however, its increase was lower compared to the overturning moment and the top-story vertical displacement. The other two parameters, the top-story lateral displacement and the top-story rotation angle, barely changed under H and H+V loading cases. Modal damping ratios and their variations in horizontal and vertical directions were also estimated using response acceleration records. No significant change in the horizontal damping ratio was observed whereas the vertical modal damping ratio noticeably increased under H+V loading. The results obtained from this study indicate that the desired structural earthquake performance cannot be provided under H+V loading due to the excessive increase in the overturning moment, and that the vertical damping ratio should be estimated considering the vertical earthquake motion.
