Radial color gradient of disk galaxies has been a key tool for diagnosing the ages and metallicities of the stars and gas of these galaxies, and thus, the formation process of these disks. In many cases, observational data support the 'inside-out' picture of disk galaxy formation proposed by Larson (1976). In this scenario, gas within dark matter halos cools and accretes on to the outer disk while enhancing star formation in the disk. Recent discoveries of "extended ultra-viloet" (XUV) disks also show that majority of disk galaxy experience active star formation within out disks where gas surface density is quite low (Thilker et al. 2007; Gil de Paz et al. 2007). However, neither gas, nor stars stay put within galaxies. They rather migrate into bulges, disperse throughout galaxies, or flow into and out of galaxies via various mechanisms. There have been a few notable studies to investigate how radial star formation and metal abundance gradients vary across populations of disk galaxies systematically. However, the mechanisms driving gas transport are still poorly understood. Cross-matching various galaxy catalogs including KVAGC and UKIDSS, we are investigating if color gradients of late-type galaxies depend on their physical properties, especially on environmental properties. We will present the result from the pilot study on Karachentsev isolated galaxy catalog.

In this paper, disk-type ultrasonic motor using a combination of radial and bending vibration modes is newly designed and fabricated. The characteristics of the test motor are also measured. By means of travelingelastic wave induced at the surface of circumference of the elastic disk, a steel bar in contact with the surface of circumference of elastic disk bonded onto the piezoelectric ceramic disks is driven inboth directions by changing the sine and cosine voltage inputs. The stator of the motor is composed of two sheets of piezoelectric ceramic disk to bond onto both surfaces of a elastic disk, respectively. As the results, the diameter of elastic body is increased, the resonant frequency is decreased. The resonant frequency of the stator is about 92 kHz, which is composed with piezoelectric ceramic disks of 28 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness, and an elastic body of 32 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. A driving voltage of 20 Vpp produces 200 rpm with a torque of 1Nm and an efficiency of about 10 %.

Organizations such as broadcasting stations and libraries which deal with huge amount of information require high-capacity storage systems for archiving their materials and information. It is necessary and urgent for the storage people to develop a compact, high capacity, and low-cost data storage systems. Even though the Blue-ray technology is commercialized and now it is on the market, demand for the compact and low-cost system is still increasing. A flexible disk system has been introduced recently to satisfy above mentioned requirements. The system uses multiple of thin disks and is expected to achieve technical requirements. However, decreasing the disk thickness makes it difficult to read and write data because it decreases the disk rigidity so that the transverse vibration of the rotating disk increases easily due to both the interaction with surrounding air and the vibration characteristics of thin flexible disk itself. In this study, flat-type stabilizer is proposed to suppress the transverse vibration of a $95{\mu}m$-thick polycarbonate disk. Characteristics of disk vibration have been studied through the results of numerical analysis from the fluid mechanics point of view. Numerical simulation is verified through the experiment by measuring the gap between the rotating disk and the stationary flat stabilizer. The axial deflections of the disk are computed for various rotating speeds and reference gap sizes and then a method of regression is applied to those data. As a result, an empirical relation is proposed for the steady deformation shape of the rotating disk.
In the present study, we propose new type of a spinning disk reactor(SDR) with high performance and very convenient structure to make a large scale equipment from lab-scale than the conventional one. A split-disk experimental equipment, based on new type of spinning disk reactor, has been developed to generate an energy to break a bulk of injected gas into smaller gas bubble. Several cases of an experimental observation make it to confirm that a bulk of injecting gas could be continuously break into smaller bubbles. It shows the feasibility to make a scale-up of SDR by using the characteristic of Taylor-Proudman column in rotating flow. A theoretical study on single phase liquid flow is given to predict a liquid induced shear stress, which make the present study to be self-containment.

We present the derived kinematic characteristics of low-${\alpha}$ thin-disk and high-${\alpha}$ thick-disk stars in the Milky Way, investigated with a sample of about 33,900 G- and K-type dwarfs from the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). Based on the level of ${\alpha}$-element enhancement as a function of [Fe/H], we separate our sample into thin- and thick-disk stars and then derive mean velocity, velocity dispersion, and velocity gradients for the U, V and W velocity components, respectively, as well as the orbital eccentricity distribution. There are notable gradients in the V velocity over [Fe/H] in both populations: -23 km s-1 dex-1 for the thin disk and +44 km s-1 dex-1 for the thick disk. The velocity dispersion of the thick disk decrease with increasing [Fe/H], while the velocity.

The effect of frictional factors on thermal stress and deformation volume of motorcycle brake disk was studied by using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. It has an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, thermal stress and deformation volume by using design of experiment with 4 elements were investigated for thermal analysis with regression analysis. Thermal stress and thermal deformation are obtained by the application of temperature from mechanical test. From this study, the result showed that the motorcycle brake disk with ventilated hole 3 had the most excellent thermal stress and deformation volume. The regression equation had a trust rate of 95% for the prediction of thermal stress and deformation volume of motorcycle brake disk was composed.
The direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method is applied to investigate steady and unsteady flow fields of a single-stage disk-type drag pump. Two different kinds of pumps are considered: the first one is a rotor-rotor combination, and the second one is a rotor-stator combination. The pumping channels are cut on a rotor and stator. The rotor and stator have 10 Archimedes' spiral blades, respectively. In the present DSMC method, the variable hard sphere model is used as a molecular model, and the no time counter method is employed as a collision sampling technique. For simulation of diatomic gas flows, the Borgnakke-Larsen phenomenological model is adopted to redistribute the translational and internal energies. The DSMC results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

A hybrid self-hearing motor, which Is a functional combination of general permanent magnet (PM) motor and hybrid active magnetic bearing(AMB), was proposed a few years ago. In this paper the hybrid self-bearing motor is modified to a disk type, in which one of two magnetic hearings was substituted for a thin yoke to make the system more compact. An outer rotors in this self-hearing motor is actively controlled only in two radial directions while the ocher motions are passively salable owing to the disk-type structure. Main advantages of the proposed self-hearing motor are simple control mechanism, low power consumption and smart structure. Mathematical model for the magnetic force Is built wish consideration of the radial displacement of the rotor. The model helps us not only to design a levitation controller but also to expect the system performance. Some experimental results show good capability and feasibility of the Proposed self-bearing motor.
In this paper, a stereoscopic display system using a rotary disk type beam shutter and two beam projectors is proposed. It is a kind of active stereoscopic display and can be easily converted from passive stereoscopic system using polarizing filters. If it is possible to synchronize the revolution speed of the beam shutter with the integer multiple of the scanning frequency of the beam projectors, we can obtain a comparable performance with our system to an active stereoscopic system using one expensive high performance beam projector. Further, if we rotate the beam shutter at sufficiently high revolution speed, our active stereoscopic system works regardless of synchronization and thus the system is much easier to implement.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate an isothermal characteristics of the condenser surface of disk type heat pipe using PF 5060 and FC 40 as working fluids. Desired temperature range at the condenser surface was $90^{\circ}C{\sim}130^{\circ}C$, which was cooled by natural convection. The operating temperature, the height of vapor space, the wall thickness of condenser, and the existence of a wick structure were considered as experimental factors. The temperature difference and the temperature fluctuation at the condenser surface were analysed to describe the performance of the heat pipe.
