During seek operation in disk drives, the recording head is moved toward desired track by seek servo controller and then is settled onto the center of the desired track by settling servo controller. If the head speed at the start of settling servo control is not slow, it may produce overshoot relative to the center of track and thus extend the settling time. The degradation in settling performance will be more severe as the track width becomes smaller for higher density of data storage. We design a new settling servo controller for minimizing settling time based on the pole-zero cancellation. In order to cancel slow poles in settling response, we apply discrete pulse signals to the system in addition to the state feedback control. For exact pole-zero cancellation, we consider the dynamics of power amplifier used for actuator current regulation and the effects of delay in control action. In addition, we present system parameter identification algerian for the robustness of our controller to system parameter variation. In order to demonstrate the practical use of our controller, we present experimental results obtained by using a commercially available disk drive.
Hard disk drives (HDD) in computer are used extensively as data storage capacity. The trend in the computer industry to produce smaller disk drives rotating at higher speeds requires an improved understanding of fluid motion in the space between disks. Laser sheet and digital camera was used for 2-dimensional visualization of the unsteady flow between co-rotating disks in air with a cylindrical enclosure (or shroud). Geometric parameters are gap height (H) between disks, and gap distance (G) between disk tip and shroud. The lobe-structured boundary between inner region and outer region was detected by inserted particles, and the number of dominant vortices was determined clearly It is found from flow visualization that the number of vortex cells can be correlated with Reynolds number based on H which is defined as $Re_H={\Omega}RH/v$ ranging from $7.96{\times}10^2$ to $1.43{\times}10^4$, and decreases as the disk speed increases. The lobe pattern by vortex cells is changed to a circular pattern for the wide gap than narrow one.
The durability of head/disk interface is an important issue for hard disk drives. Currently, there are several means of assessing the performance and integrity of the head/disk interface. In this work Track Average Amplitude(TAA) signal was used to analyzed the head/disk interface with respect to variations in disk velocity, slider pre-load and preformed scratch on the disk. Particularly, TAA variation due to disk defect in the form of a scratch was investigated.
This paper proposes a new and simple input prediction method for robust servo system. A robust tracking control system for optical disk drives to reject disk runout was recently proposed based on both Coprime Factorization(CF) and Zero Phase Error Tracking(ZPET) control. The CF control system can be designed simply and systematically. Moreover, this system has not only stability but also robustness to parameter uncertainties and disturbance rejection capability. Since optical disk tracking servo systems can detect only racking error, it was proposed that the reference input signal for ZPET could be estimated from tracking errors. In this paper, we propose a new control structure for the ZPET controller. It requires less memory than the previously proposed method for the reference signal generation. Therefore, it is very effective in runout control. Furthermore, this method can be applied to defective optical disk like surface defects on disk. Numerical simulation and experimental result show the proposed method effective.
The height of laser bumps has been considered as the limit of the minimum flying height in the contact start-stop (CSS) of hard disk drives. In this paper, tribological interactions at flying height under laser bumps are investigated in a spin stand for development of ultra-low flying head-disk interface. With the reduction of the spinning speed in a spin stand, the flying height is decreased under the height of laser bumps and, then, head-disk interactions are investigated using AE and stiction/friction signals. During seek tests and 20000 cycle-sweep tests, AE and stiction/friction signals are not significantly changed and there are no catastrophic failures of head-disk interface. Bearing analysis and AFM analysis show that there are signs of wear and plastic deformation on the disks. It is suggested that flying height could be as low as and, sometimes, lower than laser bump height.

Although there are many efficient techniques to minimize the speed gap between processor and the memory, it remains a bottleneck for various commercial implementations. Since secondary memory technologies are much slower than main memory, it is challenging to match memory speed to the processor. Usually, hard disk drives include semiconductor caches to improve their performance. A hit in the disk cache eliminates the mechanical seek time and rotational latency. To further improve performance a divided disk cache, subdivided between metadata and data, has been proposed previously. We propose a new algorithm to apply the SSD that is flash memory-based solid state drive by applying FTL. First, this paper evaluates the performance of such a disk cache via simulations using DiskSim. Then, we perform an experiment to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.
This paper investigates the effects of disk thickness and Pemto slider on PES(position error signal) for high TPI(track per inch) drives above 150kTPI at early stage of their development. In order to reduce the disk flutter which becomes a dominant contributor to the TMR, the thicker disks with both 63 and 69mi1 have been used. Also, PES of a Pemto slider with thinner thickness than Pico slider has been estimated to decrease the conversion factor of disk motion in axial direction to head off-track motion. A frequency-domain PES estimation and prediction tool has been developed via measurement of disk flutter and HSA(head stack assembly) forced vibration. It has been validated by the measured PES in drive level. Based on the model and measurement of disk flutter, PES of a drive with the thicker disk and Pemto slider is predicted and their impact is investigated.
In magnetic hard disk drives, higher areal recording density requires reduction of head-disk spacing. To overcome the increase of stiction associated with reduction of head-disk spacing, a padder slider, which adds pads to slider's air bearing surface, can be one of the practical solution for sub 20 nm flying height, and even for near contact recording. This study investigated the tribological characteristics of a padder slider. A padder slider took off slowly but showed less friction force than a normal slider. The hot/dry CSS test and drag test indicated that pad wear of a padder slider was negligible. The tribological performance of disk is an important factor to be considered. In particular, less carbon overcoat layer of the disk will result in higher stiction and wear in slider/disk interface. In conclusion, a padder slider shows encouraging tribological performances for practical use in HDD.
As high-capacity disk drives pow in track density, the allowable level of PES is becoming smaller. In this paper, some design concept of actuator is introduced to suppress the Butterfly mode that imposes the fundamental limitation on servo bandwidth. The effect of dynamics of proposed actuator on PES is examined by simulation.
The load/unload behavior of the hard disk drive slider is studied in terms of the air bearing static characteristics. The numerical continuation methods are applied to calculate suspension force - equilibrium position curve. The critical preloads of the femto size slider are analyzed. The hi-stability conditions are depicted on the skew angle - preload diagram. The perturbation method is used to check the stability of the solution branches.
