Background: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to evaluate the degree of sinus involvement in cases of inverted papilloma (IP). However, CT cannot differentiate tumor from adjacent inflammatory mucosa or retained secretions. By contrast, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been reported to be useful in distinguishing IP from paranasal sinusitis. This study investigated whether preoperative assessment with MRI and CT accurately predict the extent of IP.1) Materials and methods: CT and MRI were retrospectively reviewed in 9 cases of IP. Patients were categorized into stages based on CT and MRI findings, according to the staging system proposed by Krouse. The involvement of IP in each sinus was also assessed. Results: Differentiation of IP from inflammatory disease may be more successful in routine cases where the inflammatory mucosa has low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and very high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. CT imaging could not differentiate tumor from adjacent inflammatory mucosa or retained secretions. Conclusion: Preoperative MRI of IP can predict the location and extent of the tumor involvement in the paranasal sinuses and sometimes predicts malignant changes.

The experiments were performed in the Jinan (elevation: 300 meters above sea level), Jeollabuk-do. Seedlings (n = 63 per $3.3m^2$) of ginseng cultivar (Cheonpung, Yeonpung) were planted on April 10, 2015. Shading material of plastic film house was blue-white film. Before the Planting seedling, silicate (3 kg/10 a) or chitosan (40 kg/10 a) was fertilized and foliar sprayed on the leaves 1000 times dilution solution once a month from May to September every year. The growth results of 5-year old ginseng surveyed in 2018 are as follows. The average air temperature in the plastic film house was the highest at $26.6^{\circ}C$ and $26.5^{\circ}C$ in July and August, respectively, and the highest temperature was $40.5^{\circ}C$ in July. The maximum daily temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ or more was 30 days, with the average soil temperature being $24.9^{\circ}C$ in August. The chemical properties of the test soil are as follows. pH was 6.4~6.9 level and EC was 0.35~0.46 dS/m. The organic matter content was 33.5~41.4 g/kg, and available-P content was 251.9~306.8 mg/kg. Exchangeable cations contents, such as K, Ca and Mg were all the appropriate ranges. The soil microbial density surveyed by the dilution plate method was 10~50 times higher than that of control (Non-treatment) and actinomycete density was 3~6 times higher. Pathogens of the genus Fusarium by Metagenome analysis decreased 91.3% and 68.2% respectively in the foliar sprayed of chitosan and soluble-silicate. The light intensity (PAR) in the blue-white film plastic film house gradually increased until July and then decereased, with the average of light intensity in March-October was $120.3umol/m^2/s$. The growth of aerial parts such as plant height and stem length was better than non-sprayed group in silicate or chitosan treatments and Yeonpung cultivar was superior to the Cheonpung cultivar. The SPAD value was higher in Yeonpung cultivar foliar sprayed with soluble-silicate. The growth of underground parts such as root length and taproot length were better in chitosan and soluble-silicate treatment than control, especially in Yeonpung cultivar foliar sprayed with chitosan was good in taproot length and taproot diameter, and fresh weight of root was 60.1 g. Ginsenoside contents were 24.9 mg/g and 22.4 mg/g, in the Cheonpung cultivar foliar sprayed with soluble-silicate or chitosan respectively, 28% and 15% higher than control (19.5 mg/g). The incidence of disease by Alteraria panax and Botrytis cinerea was 3~9% and 4~9%, respectively. High temperature damage rate was 3~5%.

Objective: Few attempts have been made to investigate the prognostic value of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI or dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) MRI of non-enhancing, T2-high-signal-intensity (T2-HSI) lesions of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in newly diagnosed patients. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic values of DCE MRI and DSC MRI parameters from non-enhancing, T2-HSI lesions of GBM. Materials and Methods: A total of 76 patients with GBM who underwent preoperative DCE MRI and DSC MRI and standard treatment were retrospectively included. Six months after surgery, the patients were categorized into early progression (n = 15) and non-early progression (n = 61) groups. We extracted and analyzed the permeability and perfusion parameters of both modalities for the non-enhancing, T2-HSI lesions of the tumors. The optimal percentiles of the respective parameters obtained from cumulative histograms were determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and univariable Cox regression analyses. The results were compared using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis of progression-free survival. Results: The 95th percentile value (PV) of Ktrans, mean Ktrans, and median Ve were significant predictors of early progression as identified by the ROC curve analysis (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.704, p = 0.005; AUC = 0.684, p = 0.021; and AUC = 0.670, p = 0.0325, respectively). Univariable Cox regression analysis of the above three parametric values showed that the 95th PV of Ktrans and the mean Ktrans were significant predictors of early progression (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.06, p = 0.009; HR = 1.25, p = 0.017, respectively). Multivariable Cox regression analysis, which also incorporated clinical parameters, revealed that the 95th PV of Ktrans was the sole significant independent predictor of early progression (HR = 1.062, p < 0.009). Conclusion: The 95th PV of Ktrans from the non-enhancing, T2-HSI lesions of GBM is a potential prognostic marker for disease progression.

On MRI, abnormal signals of the intervertebral disc, destruction of the upper and lower vertebral body endplate around the disc, and bone marrow edema around the endplate are considered typical findings of infectious spondylitis. These findings can also appear in various non-infectious spinal diseases, such as degenerative changes, acute Schmorl's node, spondyloarthropathy, synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO), chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis, and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease. The imaging findings of infectious spondylitis that can be differentiated from these non-infectious spinal diseases on MRI are high signal intensity and abscess of the disc space, an abscess in the paraspinal soft tissue, and the loss of the linear low signal intensity on T1-weighted images of the bony endplate. However, these differentiation points do not always apply since there are many similarities in the imaging findings of infectious and non-infectious diseases. Therefore, for an accurate diagnosis, it is important to know the imaging characteristics related to the pathophysiology of not only infectious spondylitis but also non-infectious spinal diseases, which requires differentiation from infection.

Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS1) deficiency is an autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder which causes hyperammonemia. CPS1 is the first enzyme step in the urea cycle and almost patients present their symptoms during neonatal period. We report a case of CPS1 deficiency in a boy who developed symptoms including lethargy and seizure at 3 days of age. The ammonia level was up to $2,325{\mu}mol/L$, sodium benzoate (250 mg/kg/d) and high calories of both dextrose and lipid was promptly administered. Central access by experienced pediatric surgeon and emergent continuous hemodialysis by pediatric nephrologist was performed within 3 hours and ammonia was less than $100{\mu}mol/L$ at 5 days of age. Currently, he has showed excellent response to treatments including scavenging drugs and a low-protein diet. Despite of diffuse increasing signal intensity on cerebral white matters and basal ganglia on brain MRI, his development and weight gain were good at the last follow-up at 11 months of age. Molecular assay of the CPS1 gene demonstrated that patient had compound heterozygous for c.1529del ($p.Gly510Alafs^*5$) in exon 14 and c.3142-1G>C (IVS25(-1)G>C) in intron 25 and exon 26 boundary. The splicing mutation was novel mutation and inherited from patient's mother. Here, we report a neonatal lethal type CPS1 deficiency patient having novel mutation.
Bottom rot of Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis Rupr) hitherto undescribed in Korea is caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. Development of bottom rot in fall crops was observed and the efficiencies of fungiciial control in naturally infested field in Southern region were studied. Bottom rot symptom started to develop 20 days after transplanting 20 day old seedlings, which corresponded to the middle growing stage. At the reading stage, the infection rate increased substantially, which progressed upto an average of $52\%$ at harvesting time. The overall infection rate was about $30\%$ in Chinese cabbage field under plastic film house cultivation. However, disease intensity of fall crops was less severe than that of crops in plastic film house. where plants infested earlier, stunted and their growth was extremely poor. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth of bottom rot isolates of R. solani was $20\~25^{\circ}C$ on potato-sucrose agar. This fungus was highly pathogenic on seedlings of Chinese cabbage, radish, sesame and rape resulting in high percentage of damping-off. For other crops, such as lettuce, tomato the cucumber, the germination was delayed for 2-3 days and the percentage damping-off was lower. Anastomosis group of this fungus was idenlfied as AG II-I. Soil drenching of fungicide pencycr WP., three applications at 10 day interval, was effective; indicating the most promising one with control value $80\%$.
Human hydatid disease (cystic echinococcosis, CE) is a chronic parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus. As the disease mainly affects the liver, approximately 70% of all identified CE cases are detected in this organ. Optical molecular imaging (OMI), a noninvasive imaging technique, has never been used in vivo with the specific molecular markers of CE. Thus, we aimed to construct an in vivo fluorescent imaging mouse model of CE to locate and quantify the presence of the parasites within the liver noninvasively. Drug-treated protoscolices were monitored after marking by JC-1 dye in in vitro and in vivo studies. This work describes for the first time the successful construction of an in vivo model of E. granulosus in a small living experimental animal to achieve dynamic monitoring and observation of multiple time points of the infection course. Using this model, we quantified and analyzed labeled protoscolices based on the intensities of their red and green fluorescence. Interestingly, the ratio of red to green fluorescence intensity not only revealed the location of protoscolices but also determined the viability of the parasites in vivo and in vivo tests. The noninvasive imaging model proposed in this work will be further studied for long-term detection and observation and may potentially be widely utilized in susceptibility testing and therapeutic effect evaluation.
To investigate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in pork on the market in Korea, an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for tissue fluid (CAU-tf-ELISA) was developed using a soluble extract of T. gondii RH strain tachyzoites. As the standard positive controls, the piglets were experimentally infected with T. gondii: Group A (1,000 cysts-containing bradyzoites), Group B (500 cysts-containing bradyzoites) and Group C ($1.0{\times}10^3$ or $1.0{\times}10^4$ tachyzoites). The CAU-tf-ELISA demonstrated infection intensity-dependent positivity toward tissue fluids with average cut-off value 0.15: 100% for Group A, 93.8% for Group B and 40.6% for Group C. When tissue-specific cut-off values 0.066-0.199 were applied, CAU-tf-ELISA showed 96.7% sensitivity, 100% specificity, 100% positive and 90.0% negative predictive values. When compared with the same tissue fluids, performance of CAU-tf-ELISA was better than that of a commercial ELISA kit. Of the 583 Korea domestic pork samples tested, anti-T. gondii antibodies were detected from 9.1% of whole samples and 37.9% from skirt meat highest among pork parts. In the 386 imported frozen pork samples, 1.8% (skirt meat and shoulder blade) were positive for anti-T. gondii antibodies. In Korea, prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in the pork on retail markets appeared high, suggesting that regulations on pig farming and facilities are necessary to supply safe pork on the tables.

The accumulation of ${\beta}$-amyloid (A${\beta}$) aggregates is a characteristic of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Furthermore, these aggregates have neurotoxic effects on cells, and thus, molecules that inhibit A${\beta}$ aggregate formation could be valuable therapeutics for AD. It is well known that aggregation of A${\beta}$ depends on its hydrophobicity, and thus, in order to increase the hydrophilicity of A${\beta}$, we considered using citrate, an anionic surfactant with three carboxylic acid groups. We hypothesized that citrate could reduce hydrophobicity and increase hydrophilicity of A${\beta}_{1-40}$ molecules via hydrophilic/electrostatic interactions. We found that citrate significantly inhibited A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregation and significantly protected SH-SY5Y cell line against A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregates-induced neurotoxicity. In details, we examined the effects of citrate on A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregation and on A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregates-induced cytotoxicity, cell viability, and apoptosis. Th-T assays showed that citrate significantly inhibited A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner (Th-T intensity: from 91.3% in 0.01 mM citrate to 82.1% in 1.0 mM citrate vs. 100.0% in A${\beta}_{1-40}$ alone). In cytotoxicity and viability assays, citrate reduced the toxicity of A${\beta}_{1-40}$ in a concentration-dependent manner, in which the cytotoxicity decreased from 107.5 to 102.3% as compared with A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregates alone treated cells (127.3%) and the cell viability increased from 84.6 to 93.8% as compared with the A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregates alone treated cells (65.3%). Furthermore, Hoechst 33342 staining showed that citrate (1.0 mM) suppressed A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregates-induced apoptosis in the cells. This study suggests that citrate can inhibit A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregation and protect neurons from the apoptotic effects of A${\beta}_{1-40}$ aggregates. Accordingly, our findings suggest that citrate administration should be viewed as a novel neuroprotective strategy for AD.
It is well known that both of acupuncture and moxibustion are effective for treatment of human disease. For years, they have been utilizing a electro-acupuncture (EA) and moxibustion in attempt to manage gastric symptom. However, the data of combined EA and moxibustion on clinical effectiveness is conflicting and the action of combineAd acupoints is not well known. BL21 and ST36 which belong to bladder Meridian and stomach meridian are acupuncture points frequently used for healing gastrointestinal disease in oriental medicine. The present study was conducted to see the effects produced by combined electro-acupuncture(EA) and moxibustion using BL21 and ST36 on serum gastrin level in rats. In experiment, male Spraque-Dawley rats(body wt 140-160g) were selected. EA (2 Hz, intensity ; 10 times muscle twitch threshold) was applied for 30 minutes to ST36 under halothane anesthesia. Moxibustion($1.6{\pm}0.3 mg$, 5 times of a day) was applied during 3 days to BL21 under halothane anesthesia. Synergy effects of combined EA and moxibustion might be in according to stimulated method and used acupoints. The change of serum gastrin levels produced by combined EA and moxibustion is shown after vagotomy. These data suggested that many factors, such as the selection of acupoints, the stimulated EA methods, are capable of affecting combined EA and moxibustion effects and those effects may be not related with nervous system.
