Objectives: This study examined a case of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) in an adult with unspecified abdominal pain. Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, and moxa. Treatment progress was evaluated by follow-up monitoring of the intensity, frequency, and duration (in hours) of abdominal pain and body weight. Results: The average abdominal pain level on the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and its incidence decreased. The duration of pain was 15 hours maximum and 2.5 hours minimum. The body weight repeatedly increased and decreased but increased overall. Despite no remarkable findings from X-rays, air-fluid levels and coil-shaped folds of the small bowel were observed. Conclusions: Korean medical treatment based on a dialectic effectively relieved chronic abdominal pain and suspected CIPO-a disease that requires continuous management and therapeutic intervention.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a disease caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection that can be diagnosed through clinical symptoms with or without imaging evaluations. The typical features of RHS on imaging evaluation include signal changes and enhancement in the internal auditory canal (IAC) nerves, and the labyrinthine segment of cranial nerve VII (CN VII) and cranial nerve VIII (CN VIII). In some patients, inner ear structure (cochlear and vestibular apparatus) is involved in RHS. Neurologic complications, such as encephalitis and meningitis, are rare in RHS, but are known to occur. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary to detect both abnormal signal intensity in the IAC, CN VII, CN VIII, inner and ear structure, and CNS complications. We report an RHS patient with CN VII, VIII, and leptomeningeal enhancement within the cerebellar folia on 10-min delayed, contrast-enhanced (CE), three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) imaging.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the quality of life (QOL) and its associated factors in hepatocellular carcinoma patients with Transarterial Chemoembolization. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was used, 106 hepatocellular cancer patients participated through convenient sampling. Data were collected by self-report questionniares or face to face interviews during the period from June to December in 2014. Satisfaction for pain control, perceived health status, professional support and QOL were measured by Assessment of Patient Satisfaction for Pain Management, Health Self-Rating, Relationship Questionnaire, Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-General. Results: The mean age of participants was 63.7 years and most of them were male (86.8%) and married (84.9%). The mean score of QOL was 67.42. QOL was significantly different by religion. Number of other disease and perceived health status were positively correlated to QOL. Pain intensity was negatively correlated to QOL. As a result of stepwise multiple regression analysis, perceived health status and religion were explained 41.0% (p<.001) of the variance in QOL. Conclusion: Perceived health status should be considered when developing nursing intervention to improve QOL among hepatocellular cancer patients with Transarterial Chemoembolization.
A 36-year-old male patient developed diffuse low back pain. His past medical history was unremarkable and had no family history of neuromuscular disease. He had no bladder and bowel problems. Creatine kinase was 172 U/L (normal < 170). Other fluid and blood chemistry tests were normal. Manual muscle test grades of extremities and sensory examination were normal. Muscle stretch reflexes were normal. Fasciculations and myotonia were not detected. Straight leg raising test was negative. There was no spinal root compression, spinal stenosis, or signal intensity change of spinal cord on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Fatty change and atrophy of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar paraspinal muscles were noted on MRI. Nerve conduction studies were normal. Electromyography showed 1+ positive sharp waves in the lumbar paraspinal muscles. Electromyography of upper and lower extremity muscles revealed no abnormal spontaneous activity. We report a rare case of severe paraspinal muscle atrophy with fatty degeneration in a Young Adult.
Three-dimensional high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides fine-level anatomical information for disease diagnosis. However, there is a limitation in obtaining high resolution due to the long scan time for wide spatial coverage. Therefore, in order to obtain a clear high-resolution(HR) image in a wide spatial coverage, a super-resolution technology that converts a low-resolution(LR) MRI image into a high-resolution is required. In this paper, we propose a super-resolution technique through filter learning based on information on the surrounding gradient information in 3D space from 3D MRI images. In the learning step, the gradient features of each voxel are computed through eigen-decomposition from 3D patch. Based on these features, we get the learned filters that minimize the difference of intensity between pairs of LR and HR images for similar features. In test step, the gradient feature of the patch is obtained for each voxel, and the filter is applied by selecting a filter corresponding to the feature closest to it. As a result of learning 100 T1 brain MRI images of HCP which is publicly opened, we showed that the performance improved by up to about 11% compared to the traditional interpolation method.

Objective : The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an obstacle for molecules to pass through from blood to the brain. Focused ultrasound is a new method which temporarily opens the BBB, which makes pharmaceutical delivery or removal of neurodegenerative proteins possible. This study was demonstrated to review our BBB opening procedure with magnetic resonance guided images and find specific patterns in the BBB opening. Methods : In this study, we reviewed the procedures and results of two clinical studies on BBB opening using focused ultrasound regarding its safety and clinical efficacy. Magnetic resonance images were also reviewed to discover any specific findings. Results : Two clinical trials showed clinical benefits. All clinical trials demonstrated safe BBB opening, with no specific side effects. Magnetic resonance imaging showed temporary T1 contrast enhancement in the sonication area, verifying the BBB opening. Several low-signal intensity spots were observed in the T2 susceptibility-weighted angiography images, which were also reversible and temporary. Although these spots can be considered as microbleeding, evidence suggests these are not ordinary microbleeding but an indicator for adequate BBB opening. Conclusion : Magnetic resonance images proved safe and efficient BBB opening in humans, using focused ultrasound.
Objective: The purpose of this studyaimed to investigate the effects of scapular stabilization training using the different exercise prop for impingement syndrome of factory workers. Design: A randomized controlled trial Methods: Twenty shoulder impingement syndrome subjects were randomly divided into two groups of ten subjects each. Inclusion criteria was presence of positive sign in at least two of Neer test, Hawkins test, Yocum test, Jobe test and Speeds test. Andexclusion criteria, those with surgical history of rotator cuff, those with disease in upper limb other than shoulder impingement syndrome, those who took anti-inflammatory drugs over the past 12 months were excluded from the sample. One group was performed scapula stabilization exercise using elastic bands, while dumbbell group performed the exercise using dumbbell. Both groups performed the exercise after applying the general physical therapy. After applying five days a week for a total of six weeks, range of motion of shoulder joint, muscle strength and pain and function level were evaluated. Results: After the intervention, in both groups, all dependent variables at the 6-week post-test significantly improved compared with the pre-test (p<0.05). In addition, elastic band exercise group showed a significant differences in SPADI function score and SPADI total score compared to the dumbbell group(p<0.05). Conclusions: The elastic band training may be effective methodology using low-to-moderate intensity resistance for SPADI scores.
Objective: This study addressed the case of a cerebral infarction patient with recurring aspiration pneumonia. Methods: A patient diagnosed with cerebral infarction with recurring aspiration pneumonia was treated with Korean medicine therapies, including herbal medication (Shigyungbanha-tang-gami), acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and moxibustion combined with antibiotics for 31 days. To evaluate the therapeutic effect, we checked chest X-rays, lab evaluations, the number of night suctions, and body temperature. Results: After treatment, chest X-rays and inflammation markers improved. In addition, the number of night suctions decreased, and the body temperature was normalized. Aspiration pneumonia recurred. However, the intensity of the symptoms gradually weakened, and the recovery speed increased. Conclusion: These results suggest that Korean medicine therapies, including Shigyungbanha-tang-gami combined with antibiotics, have a beneficial effect on recurring aspiration pneumonia, an additional disease related to cerebral infarction.
The increase in the rearing intensity of pigs has caused deterioration in the pig house's internal environment such as temperature, humidity, ammonia gas, and so on. Traditionally, the widely used method to control the internal environment was through the manipulation of the ventilation system. However, the conventional ventilation system had a limitation to control the internal environment, prevent livestock disease, save energy, and reduce odor emission. To overcome this problem, the air-recirculated ventilation system was suggested. This system has a semi-closed loop ventilation type. For designing this system, it was essential to evaluate the ventilation rates considering the pressure loss of ducts. Therefore, in this study, pressure loss calculation and experiment were conducted for the quantitative ventilation design of a semi-closed loop system. The results of the experiment showed that the inlet through which external air flows should always be opened. In addition, it was also found that for the optimum design of the semi-closed loop ventilation system, it was appropriate to install a damper or a backflow prevention device rather than a ventilation fan.
