  • Currently, amount of export strawberry has been continuously increased to ship many south Asia countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore. In the distribution process, significant damage to the quality has been caused depending on the environmental conditions. Gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea has been known as major damage to the export strawberry, and the disease was caused during shipping and distribution to the final consumers. This study was performed to assess the relationship between pathogen density in packing shed and disease incidence of gray mold during storage period. Maximum gray mold disease incidence in storage period was up to 16% with low temperature condition ($4^{\circ}C$). At room temperature condition, the disease incidence reached up to 100% even densities of the pathogen spore were recorded relatively low in the packing shed. As results of the study, the correlation between pathogen density in the air and disease occurrence clearly clarified.

  • Objectives : To investigate the effectiveness of Korean Medicine services use on the all-cause mortality and incidence of Parkinson's disease(PD) in elderly patients with chronic disease based on the National Health Insurance Service Corhort Database (elderly), called as the NHIS-senior. Methods : This study was a retrospective cohort analysis conducted using the NHIS-senior. Patients with chronic diseases over 65 years old who were not diagnosed PD during 2007-2009 were identified. The case group was defined as patients who used both Korean Medicine and Western Medicine services and the control group consisted of patients who used Western Medicine service only. The all-cause mortality and incidence of PD was analyzed using the Cox proportional hazard model after a propensity score matching(PSM) with a 1:1 ratio. Results : After PSM, the cohort included 47,546 subjects (23,773 in the case group, 23,773 in the control group). Sex, age, comorbidity, severity of disability, and neurology medical service utilization were adjusted in both groups. The mortality was 0.668 times (95% C.I.: 0.646-0.690) lower in the case group than the control group, which was statistically significant (p<0.001). The incidence of PD was 1.051 times (95% C.I.: 0.962-1.148) higher in the case group than the control group, which was not statistically significant(p=0.272). Conclusion : It was not obvious that the use of both Korean Medicine service and Western Medicine services for prevention of PD is benefitial than using only Western Medicine. But it would be possible that using both Korean Medicine and Western Medicine services decreases the mortality than using Western Medicine alone.

  • We are proposed for the computation of disease frequency measures and of their associated variances from data collected through prospective study of multiple dynamic cohort (herds) with a National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) in Gyeongnam. We can be estimated and calculated the annual incidence density for a group of herds and the 1-month risk of disease from the same within herd measure of monthly incidence density. We are proposed that the choice of measure to be estimated depend on the intended use of the information. From results in this study, Our study demonstrate that risk estimates are appropriates for producers and clinic veterinarian making decisions at the animal or herd level. Incidence density measures are appropriate for extrapolation to reference populations used for state and regional-level decision making.

  • This paper deals with a delayed SEIRS epidemic model with pulse vaccination and crowded incidence rate. Moreover, the case of vertical and horizontal transmission is considered. By using the discrete dynamical system determined by the stroboscopic map, the exact infection-free periodic solution of the SEIRS model is obtained. Further, by employing the comparison arguments, we prove that under the condition that $R_*$ < 1 the infection-free periodic solution is globally attractive, and that under the condition that $R^*$ > 1 the disease is uniformly persistent, which means that after some period of time the disease will become endemic.

  • The optimal quantity of inoculum was determined to screen resistance of garlic cultivars against Sclerotium cepivorum and 30 cultivars was tested. The growth of the pathogen in detached roots, Disease incidence was increased when the inoculum density was raised form 10 to 100 sclerotia. The optimal inoculum density to differentiate resistance or susceptibility of garlic cultivars was seemed to be 50 sclerotia. The cultivars collected from England, Japan, Nepal and Turkey, and cultivars such as common red, PI1356104 and PI135693 were less than the other cultivars in their disease incidence. The growth of S. cepivorum in detached roots varied from 23 to 33 mm according to garlic cultivars. There was no relationship between the disease incidence and the growth in detached roots. The sclerotial germination was increased significantly when root extract was extract was added. The addition of only distilled water resulted in 13% germination, but the addition of 0.25 g of root extract in 100 ml distilled water resulted in more than 85% germination. There was no difference in the stimulation of sclerotial germination among cultivars which showed different resistance.

  • Susceptibility of soybean cultivars to Calonectria illicicola was evaluated in a greenhouse by inoculating seedlings with mycelium in agar discs placed on the stems at the soil line. A range of responses was detected among cultivars following inoculation with a virulent isolate of C.ilicicola. Rankings of cultivars between greenhouse tests 1 and 2 were similar for disease severity and areas under the disease progress curves (AUDPC). In addition, rankings of cultivars for Final disease severity were highly correlated with AUDPC in test 1 ($r_s$ =0.88, t =5.48, p<0.001), test 2 ($r_s$ =0.99, t =22.10, p<0.001), and when tests were combined ($r_s$=0.89, t=5.82, p<0. 001). Final disease severity and AUDPC consistently identified Asgrow 7986, Braxton, Cajun, and Forrest as soybean cultivars least susceptible to red crown rot. In 1993 and 1994 field tests, a range in disease susceptibility was observed for tested cultivars but none was completely resistant. Soybean cultivars Braxton, Cajun, and Forrest, which were least susceptible to red crown rot in greenhouse tests, also ranked among cultivars with the lowest disease incidence and AUDPC in field tests. Comparisons .between rankings of the eight cultivars common to greenhouse and field tests showed a correlation between final disease severity from combined greenhouse tests and both final disease incidence ($r_s$=0.63, t =1.99, p<0.1) and AUDPC ($r_s$=0.60, t =1.82, p < 0.2) from the combined field tests. However, AUDPC from greenhouse tests did not correlate with either final disease incidence or AUDPC from field tests. The green-house screening method provided consistent results between greenhouse and field tests and successfully identified the least susceptible cultivars Braxton, Cajun, and Forrest.

  • Background: Cancer accounts for 12.6% of total deaths in the world (just after heart disease). Materials and Methods: Frequency and age-specific incidence rates of breast and gynecologic cancers in Iran are calculated based on the dataset of the National Cancer Registry of Iran in 2005. Results: Gynecologic and breast cancer accounted for 7.6% and 25.6% of total cancer cases, respectively. Ovarian cancer was the most frequent gynecologic cancer followed by endometrium. Endometrial cancer revealed the highest age specific incidence rate followed by ovary (after 59 years). Conclusions: Regarding disease burden, breast and gynecologic cases account for 33.4% of total cancer patients. The age specific incidence rate is a useful guide in epidemiologic and future plans.

  • Three fungicides, Orbit (propiconazole), Benlate (benomyl) and ASC-66835 (fluazinam), were tested as soil drenches to control disappearing root rot (DRR) of ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) in gardens artificially infested with Cylindrocarpon dsstrutans. The incidence of DRR was low (0∼3.5%) in uninfected plots and significantly higher in infested plots (2.6∼19.9%). Significant reductions in the incidence of DRR were observed in 1-year-old and 2-year-old gardens that were treated and assessed for disease in the same year Significant control was not obtained in 3-year-old gardens treated and as secede in the same year, or in 1-year-old or 2-year-old gardens assessed in the year following information. Disease incidence was significantly reduced by 49-77% by low and high rates of benomyl (45 and 1,250 mg a.1./L) and propiconazole (10 and 40 mg a.i./L) and by fluazinam at 150 mg a.i./L. These fungicides seem to be worthy of further investigation as soil drenches to control DRR of ginseng.
