Chigger mites are the vector of scrub typhus. This study estimates the infestation status and ecological characteristics of chiggers on the chestnut white-bellied rat Niviventer fulvescens in Southwest China between 2001 and 2019. Chiggers were identified under the microscope, and infestation indices were calculated. The Preston's log-normal model was used to fit the curve of species abundance distribution. A total of 6,557 chiggers were collected in 136 of 342 N. fulvescens rats, showing high overall infestation indices (prevalence=39.8%, mean abundance=19.2, mean intensity=48.2) and high species diversity (S=100, H'=3.0). Leptotrombidium cangjiangense, Neotrombicula japonica, and Ascoschoengastia sifanga were the three dominant chigger species (constituent ratio=42.9%; 2,736/6,384) and exhibited an aggregated distribution among different rat individuals. We identified 100 chigger species, with 3 of them (Leptotrombidium scutellare, Leptotrombidium wenense, and Leptotrombidium deliense) as the main vectors of scrub typhus in China and nine species as potential vectors of this disease. Disease vector occurrence on N. fulvescens may increase the risk of spreading scrub typhus from rats to humans. Chigger infestation on N. fulvescens varied significantly in different environments. The species abundance distribution showed a log-normal distribution pattern. The estimated number of chigger species on N. fulvescens was 126 species.

Understanding and monitoring virus-mediated infections has gained importance since the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Studies of high-throughput omics-based immune profiling of COVID-19 patients can help manage the current pandemic and future virus-mediated pandemics. Although COVID-19 is being studied since past 2 years, detailed mechanisms of the initial induction of dynamic immune responses or the molecular mechanisms that characterize disease progression remains unclear. This study involved comprehensively collected biospecimens and longitudinal multi-omics data of 300 COVID-19 patients and 120 healthy controls, including whole genome sequencing (WGS), single-cell RNA sequencing combined with T cell receptor (TCR) and B cell receptor (BCR) sequencing (scRNA(+scTCR/BCR)-seq), bulk BCR and TCR sequencing (bulk TCR/BCR-seq), and cytokine profiling. Clinical data were also collected from hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and HLA typing, laboratory characteristics, and COVID-19 viral genome sequencing were performed during the initial diagnosis. The entire set of biospecimens and multi-omics data generated in this project can be accessed by researchers from the National Biobank of Korea with prior approval. This distribution of large-scale multi-omics data of COVID-19 patients can facilitate the understanding of biological crosstalk involved in COVID-19 infection and contribute to the development of potential methodologies for its diagnosis and treatment.
The change in vascular adhesion molecule expression and number of infiltrating leukocytes were investigated irnmunohistochemically in clinically healthy and inflammed gingiva. Monoclonal antibodies to ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and E-cadherin were used to identify positive vessels and leukocyte within gingival biopsies. 10 healthy gingiva and 30 inflammed gingiva was resected by clinical crown lengthening and modified Widman flap operation, respectively. Leukocyte entry into tissues at sites of inflammation is controlled by the interaction between adhesion molecule and endothelium. Because of rapid and severe destructive periodontal disease that is remarkable leukocyte adhesion deficiency, it is very important to unerdstand the mechanism of host defence against periodontal disease. The purpose of this investigation was the characterization of the presence and distribution of the adhesion molecule(ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and Evcadherin) in inflammatory gingival tissues compared to clinically healthy gingiva. The results were as followed; 1. ICAM-1 was distributed on basal layer, endothelium and mononuclear cells 10 healthy gingiva but inflammed gingiva was observed stronger stain than healthy gingiva. 2. Rare expression was observed in both group but few positive VCAM-1 cells were investigated in inflammatory gingival tissues 3. E-cadherin was expressed in only epithelium and reduced expression was observed in inflammatory gingival tissues. ICAM-1, VCAM-1 showed more expression in inflammatory tissues compared to healthy gingiva. Conversely, E-cadherin revealed a opposite result. These finding demonstrate a characteristic distribution and degree of adhesion molecule in healthy and inflammatory gingival tissues. But it is suggested that more detail study be progressive associated with leukocyte adhesion molecule to determine characterization of periodontal disease.
Purpose: This study was conducted to prepare the fundamental data on oral hygiene of the elderly and to assess the behavior of oral hygiene, subjective oral health, oral health problem among the elderly, and to contribute to successful enhancement of life in their declining years. Methods: The author surveyed the behavior of oral hygiene, subjective oral health, oral health problem to 192 elderly at a health center of Busan using structured self- administered questionnaire from Nov. 2nd 2009 to Feb. 10th 2010. In this study of the oak wilt disease that has occurred in a large scale in a protected area located near South Korea's metropolitan region, a detailed analysis has been conducted on the terrain, species and Diameters at Breast Height (DBH) of infected trees to identify the distribution of infection properties in the affected area. Taking into consideration the distribution of oak tree vegetation, a total of 4,640 quadrats in a size of 10 m by 10 m, have been set; and oak tree species, the DBH and infection damage per quadrat have been investigated. Geological properties have been analyzed according to elevation, slope, aspect and micro topography while a weighted value has been given according to the degree of infection in order to calculate an infection index. Through correlation analysis, the infection ratio of seriously-damaged and withered trees and the infection index have been analyzed with regards to the geological properties, tree species and DBH. The analysis shows that the disease tends to affect an area with medium elevation rather than those in the highest or lowest areas and that serious damage has been observed at rugged spots with a steep gradient (more than $30^{\circ}$). Although there has been no distinct tendency with regards to aspect, the infection ratio is relatively high in areas facing the north while the seriously-damaged and withered ratio are high in areas facing the south. In terms of micro topography, more damage has been spotted in valley terrain. Quercus mongolica has sustained more damage than other species. When it comes to the DBH, as seen in previous studies, large trees have suffered severe damage, but the analysis has also revealed conspicuous damage to medium trees with a DBH of 15-20 cm, which had not previously been considered at high risk.
Paranasal sinusitis, especially chronic is one of the most common diseases in the field of otolaryngology. It is similar to Bee Yeun(鼻淵) in oriental medicine. Most cases of sinusitis are due to anatomical abnormalities within ostiomeatal unit or disturbed mucocilliary flow. The ostiomeatal unit is the first place of contact with bacteria and allergens during aspiration, and it can be obstructed easily by minute mucosal swelling due to anatomical narrowness. Therefore the treatment of paranasal sinusitis is not easy and often leads to recurrences in spite of long term treatment or surgical therapy. We studied 83 patients who had visited our hospital with complaints of nasal symptoms; they had been diagnosed as having paranasal sinusitis through an endoscopy or CT scan in another hospital and were diagnosed as the paranasal sinusitis through a PNS series. The results were as follows: 1. Age and sex distribution: The most common occurence was found between 6-10 and 1-5 years old. The Males Were 52($62.7\%$) and Females were 31($37.3\%$). 2. By residence 58 cases lived in apts: 25 lived in houses. 3. The longest duration of disease varied from a lower of 13 to a higher of 36 months in 22 cases and from 7 to 12 months in 21 cases. 4. The most common complication & past history with otolaryngologic or allergic disease were adenoid or tonsil hypertrophy & tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (21 cases). In decreasing order the others were atopic dematitis, otitis media with effusion and allergic rhinitis. 5. Distribution of paranasal sinus disease was most common in both maxillary sinuses in 52 cases. 12 cases showed a normal PNS X-ray series but these had been diagnosed as paranasal sinusitis with an endoscopy or CT scan in another hospital. 6. Common sinusitis - related symptoms were from highest incidence to lowest nasal obstruction, postnasal drip rhinorrhea, frontal headache, cough with sputum. 7. The most administered of prescription was Gamibangpoongtongsungsan and Sunbangpaedoksan extract. 8. In 26 cases the subjects showed significant improvement symptoms in PNS X-ray series : In 21 case showed partial improvement symptoms.
