  • An aphasia screening test can serve a main purpose of differentiating aphasics from non-aphasic patients in a quick as well as efficient manner. As a preliminary study for developing a standardized aphasia screening test for Korean patients, we constructed an aphasia screening test constituting items from the Paradise' Korean version-the Western Aphasia Battery(P K-WAB). All test items were analyzed in order to extract items with optimal item discrimination and adequate item difficulty indices. From the results, we were able to select some items from each subtest with optimal results of discriminant function analysis for aphasic and normal control groups. It is expected, thus, that information on the item analysis could be utilized in developing a Korean aphasia screening test.

  • According to the use of distribution automation systems, the function to find or to search a fault phase is necessary for automatic switches in a distribution substation. In this paper, two algorithms are developed to fine the fault circuit and the fault phase for the automatic switches in substation with ungrounded power system. One is the fault circuit searching method using the zero sequence voltage at the bus and zero sequence current of circuit current and the other is to find the fault phase using the line voltage and zero sequence current. The developed algorithms are tested in the case study simulations. An ungrounded power system is modeled by EMTP as a case study system. The developed algorithms are tested in the case study simulations and each shows correct results.

  • Background and Objectives : This study is purposed to investigate the statistically significant discrimination model for predicting vocal fold nodule and polyp's lesional grade, with patients' background data and objective voice evaluation parameters. Materials and Method : The retrospective research was carried out at the Ewha Womans University Hospital. 122 patients' voice examination data had been selected, and lesion screening (Grade I, II, and III) was conducted by 2 ENT specialists, with each patient's vocal fold pictures achieved during the laryngoscopy examination. Results : The Lesional Grade Discrimination Model with which the lesional grade of vocal fold nodules and polyps could be predicted was derived by the ordinal logistic regression analysis (using SPSS 10.0). With this model the lesional grades of 73 out of 122 patients(59.8%) were correctly predicted to their formerly screened ones. Conclusion : This model applied the multivariate approach, which statistically combined these currently used parameters, Jitter, Shimmer, MFR, MPT, and patient's background data such as gender and dysphonia period. It might explain the status of benign lesion of vocal folds, and furthermore expect the physiological function of vocal folds.

  • The space of IID([ndependently, Identically Distributed) textures was built with axes of mean luminance and contrast, and studied on what kind of mechanisms were required to mediate texture segregation in this space. The conjecture was tested that one of these mechanisms is sensitive to the differences between the means of textures to be discriminated, whereas the other is sensitive to the differences between variances. The probability of discrimination was measured for various pairs of textures in the lID space The data were well fit by a model in which discrimination depends on two mechanisms whose responses are combined by probability summation. The conjecture was rejected that two mechanisms respectively tuned to mean and variance of texture function in segregation. Discrimination within space is mediated by 2 independent channels however: the 2 independent channels are not exactly tuned to texture mean and variance. One m mechanism was primarily sensitive to texture mean, whereas the other was sensitive to b both texture mean and variance.

  • The new type phoswich detector consisting of the ZnS(Ag) and plastic scintillator for alpha/beta-ray simultaneous counting was developed for monitoring radiological contamination inside pipes. The detection performance was estimated using the PSD (pulse shape discrimination) method as a function of distance between the scintillator and radioactive source. The attenuation of particles traveling through a thin film for preventing the detector from being contaminated was experimentally estimated. It is concluded from our investigation that the phoswich detector developed can provide a sufficient alpha/beta-ray discrimination. The application of a thin film for preventing the detector from being contaminated was proven to be feasible.

  • In this letter, we present a new speech hash function based on the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) of linear prediction coefficients (LPCs). First, linear prediction analysis is applied to the speech to obtain its LPCs, which represent the frequency shaping attributes of the vocal tract. Then, the NMF is performed on the LPCs to capture the speech's local feature, which is then used for hash vector generation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hash function in terms of discrimination and robustness against various types of content preserving signal processing manipulations.

  • When using the Support Vector Machine in the online signature verification, SVM kernel function should be chosen to use non-linear SVM and the constant parameters in the kernel functions should be adjusted to appropriate values to reduce the error rate of signature verification. Non-linear SVM which is built on a strong mathematical basis shows better performance of classification with the higher discrimination power. However, choosing the kernel function and adjusting constant parameter values depend on the heuristics of the problem domain. In the signature verification, this paper deals with the problems of selecting the correct kernel function and constant parameters' values, and shows the kernel function and coefficient parameter's values with the minimum error rate. As a result of this research, we expect the average error rate to be less than 1%.

  • In recent elementary school mathematics a word 'stipulation' newly appears. The word is used instead of definition. However, there seems to be some differences between definition and stipulation. So, in this paper we investigate those differences through the concept 'function of definition'. In school mathematics textbooks there are definitions which carry out special functions In mathematical contexts or situations. We can say that we understand those definitions, only if we also understand the functions of definitions in those contexts or situations. Functions of definition are classified as, stipulation-function, discrimination-function, analysis-function, demonstration-function, improvement-function. With these analyses we made a frame for investigating the characteristics of the definitions in recent elementary school mathematics textbooks. As a result of analysing functions of definition we found that generally speaking, stipulation-function is excessively emphasized and the other functions of definition are not explained adequately in school mathematics textbooks. So it is required that the textbook authors should be careful not to miss an opportunity for the functional understanding and the mathematics teachers should be aware of the functions of definitions. Finally, we comment that textbook author, teacher, and researcher should be careful in using the word 'stipulation' instead of definition, because, although there are various functions of definitions, students might ream only stipulation-function.

  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, noninvasive and useful technique for exploring brain function. Especially, for the study of cognition, the technique can modulate a cognitive performance if the targeted area is engaged, because TMS has an effect on cortical network. The effect of TMS can vary depending on the frequency, intensity, and timing of stimulation. In this paper, we review the studies with TMS targeting various regions for evaluation of cognitive function. Cognitive functions, such as attention, working memory, semantic decision, discrimination and social cognition can be improved or deteriorated according to TMS stimulation protocols. Furthermore, potential therapeutic applications of TMS, including therapy in a variety of illness and research into cortical localization, are discussed.

  • In this paper, we presented a new approach to the recognition of unconstrained handwritten numerals using an improved RBF(Radial Basis Function) Neural Networks. The RBF Neural Networks used Raised Cosine as a basis function to improve discrimination and reduce processing time. The performance of Raised Cosine RBF Neural Networks classifier was evaluated using totally unconstrained handwritten numeral database of Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, and the experimental results showed the recognition rate of 98.05%.
