  • There are many issues in computer simulation such as verifying model code, validating models, understanding the dynamics of systems and training the personnel. The developers of simulation tool have been interested in the animation since it can help solve the problems related to the above listed issues. In practice, animation is one of the popular method for displaying the simulation output for solving these problems. Trying to display all the graphic objects representing the dynamics of the models being simulated, however, causes the distraction of focus, which results in solving the above listed problems difficult. The redundant graphic objects also Increase the computer computation overhead. This paper presents a hierarchical animation environment in which the users can have better focus on the dynamics of system components. In hierarchical animation environment the users can observe the dynamics of system by selectively choosing the hierarchical level and components with in a level of the hierarchically structured model. Especially when the model is large and complex the selection of observation level is needed. The design approach of the hierarchical animator is based on the DEVS(Discrete Event system Specification) formalism which is theoretically well grounded means of expressing modular and hierarchical models.

  • A design method that can easily construct intelligent patient monitoring systems is proposed. To achieve the design method, the SES/MB concept and a discrete event-based logic control formalism based on a set theory is introduced. In this control paradigm the controller expects to receive confirming sensor responses to its control commands within definite time windows determined by DEVS model of the system under control. Because data to be used for rule-based symbolic reasoning are to be abstracted, several AI methods are applied the processes. These methods are applied to intelligent patient monitoring systems so that they facilitate transformation from low level raw data to high level linguistic data. Model-based system representations have advantages of reusability, extensibility, flexsibility, independent testability and encapsulation.

  • The DEVS formalism has the well-defined relationship between its model and simulator. However, it does not define the connection between its model and experimental frame needed when a simulator's implemented with it. So, in most DEVS based simulators, the modules of the two parts are tangled, so that changing and reusing them is not easy. This paper proposes a method to improve the changeability of the experimental frame and the reusability of the model by modularizing the two parts using the AOP technology. I applied the new method to a real project, and the result shows that it improves the two qualities effectively than before.

  • In this paper, the development of a simulator for the performance estimation and parameter optimization of an integrates voice/data packet communication network is described. The simulator implemented is capable of simulating the integrated voice/data network that handles packet voice terminals as well as data terminals and hosts operating under standard CCITT protocols. Of the three descrete event simulation approaches presently known, the process interaction method has been chose. With this approach one can implement a simulator that is related most Closely with the real system. The simulator has been implemented in PL/I and GPSS simulation languages, resulting in a software package of about 4,000 lines. To reduce the computer run time of the simulator, we have used a method of reducing conditional events based on a GPSS LINK block. We describe various aspects of the simulation model developed. We then investigate the performance of a 7-node network using the simulator, and present the results. For validation of the simulator developed, we construct a simulation model for a simple voice/ data multiplexer, and compare the results of simulation with those of an analytical model.

  • In recent years, the introduction of complex systems analysis based on various variables has become more active in order to identify and analyze complex problems of Modern Society. Prediction of patients' spatial perception and usability according to the spatial arrangement of the outpatient department is a very important factor for providing high quality hospital service. For objective analysis, the standard program procedure and analysis index for the diseases of the elderly were prepared and the uniformity of the atmospheric space was evaluated through heat map analysis and quantitative analysis. In this study, 73 cells were installed and simulated to analyze the uniformity of the four alternatives according to the change of the arrangement of the medical care space, receiving space, and consultation space using the complex system analysis method for the nursing hospitals. The resulting density was derived. The results are as follows. 1)The layout of the reception space has the greatest influence on the total spatial density of the waiting space. 2) The uniformity of the waiting space can be increased by separating the examination space and the examination space. 3)The closer the location of the receiving space is from the entrance, the greater the density of the waiting space. Finally, this study applied discrete event simulation to the evaluation of uniformity of atmosphere space, and proved that the actor - based model can be utilized for utilization and evaluation as spatial analysis methodology.

  • Weapon systems for future war require operating various war scenarios that are getting complex. Similarly, modeling and simulation technique is getting attention to acquire more effective weapon systems. Several S/W tools exist for simulating small scale engagements which depict a kind of war. However, it is very hard to model combat objects more systematic, and reuse them. To overcome these difficulties, this paper presents a modeling methodology for simulating small scale engagement using the DEVS-formalism. In this paper, we systematically classified and defined combat objects, likewise, explain a framework for a small scale combat simulation.

  • A heterogeneous webserver such as an HTTP server should be able to currently deal with numerous users. To the end, it is inevitable to formally analyze web traffics as well as a webserver itself. In particular, as most systems adopt HTTP 1.1 protocol instead of HTTP 1.0 protocol, it is more difficult to represent the system as a simple analytic mode. In addition, since most of previous models missed the detailed processes of the server, it is unsuitable for the current server based on HTTP 1.1 to tune itself with its own system parameters. On the basis of HTTP 1.1 Protocol supporting persistent connections, we thus present an analytical end-to-end tandem queueing model considering specific hardware configurations inside the webserver, which ultimately covers from accepting the customer requests to completing the services.

  • This paper provides an evaluation of static flowshop scheduling heuristics for minimizing makespan as an objective function in the dynamic flowshop model, in which new jobs with stochastic processing times arrive at the shop randomly over time and are added into the waiting jobs for processing. A total of sixteen scheduling heuristics, including several revisions and combinations of previously reported me-sixteen scheduling heuristics, including several revisions and combinations of previously reported methods, are surmmarized. These scheduling rules are evaluated via computer using a SLAM discrete event simulation model. The results for the simulation are analyzed using both statistical and nonstatistical methods. The results from the study suggest which of the popular scheduling rules hold promise for application to practical dynamic flowshop problems.

  • The mobile communication technology would be one of the most appropriate means for achieving process innovation in the actual business area. This article performs a simulation study to examine the effect of introducing a mobile technology to the after-sales service and its logistics process. The performances of the two different systems, before and after introducing a mobile technology, are examined based on operational cost, operational efficiency, and customer service level using a discrete event simulation. The real-world data, extracted from a leading Korean electronics firm, was collected for this study. The results show that the TO-BE(after) model outperforms the AS-IS(before) model over all the performance indices. And the effects of introducing the mobile technology are more significant on the more tightly controlled inventory policy.

  • In this paper, we developed a simulation model of a car parts assembly line to improve the system performance such as worker's utilization balancing, productivity. This simulation model has been developed using QUEST, a true 3D discrete event simulation pakcage that is designed for modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems. We have suggested the results obtained to improve the system performances of an existing production line.
