Manually mapping fractures in construction stone mines is challenging, time-consuming, and hazardous. In this method, there is no physical access to all points. In contrast, digital image processing offers a safe, cost-effective, and fast alternative, with the capability to map all joints. In this study, two methods of detecting the trace of discontinuities using image processing in construction stone mines are presented. To achieve this, we employ two modified Hough transform algorithms and the degree of neighborhood technique. Initially, we introduced a method for selecting the best edge detector and smoothing algorithms. Subsequently, the Canny detector and median smoother were identified as the most efficient tools. To trace discontinuities using the mentioned methods, common preprocessing steps were initially applied to the image. Following this, each of the two algorithms followed a distinct approach. The Hough transform algorithm was first applied to the image, and the traces were represented through line drawings. Subsequently, the Hough transform results were refined using fuzzy clustering and reduced clustering algorithms, along with a novel algorithm known as the farthest points' algorithm. Additionally, we developed another algorithm, the degree of neighborhood, tailored for detecting discontinuity traces in construction stones. After completing the common preprocessing steps, the thinning operation was performed on the target image, and the degree of neighborhood for lineament pixels was determined. Subsequently, short lines were removed, and the discontinuities were determined based on the degree of neighborhood. In the final step, we connected lines that were previously separated using the method to be described. The comparison of results demonstrates that image processing is a suitable tool for identifying rock mass discontinuity traces. Finally, a comparison of two images from different construction stone mines presented at the end of this study reveals that in images with fewer traces of discontinuities and a softer texture, both algorithms effectively detect the discontinuity traces.
Previous works related to texture coordinate coding of the three-dimensional(3-D) mesh models employed the same predictor as the geometry coder. However, discontinuities in the texture coordinates cause unreasonable prediction. Especially, discontinuities become more serious for the 3-D mesh model with a non-atlas texture image. In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme to remove discontinuities in the texture coordinates by reallocating texture segments according to a coding order. Experiment results show that the proposed coding scheme outperforms the MPEG-4 3DMC standard in terms of compression efficiency. The proposed scheme not only overcome the discontinuity problem by regenerating a texture image, but also improve coding efficiency of texture coordinate compression.

Rock Mass Rating has been widely applied to the underground tunnel excavation and many other practical problems in rock engineering. However, Rock Mass Rating is hard to make out because it is difficult to estimate each valuation items through all kind of field situations and items of RMR have interdependence. So the experts of tunnel assessment have problems with rating rock mass. In this study, using multivariate analysis based on domestic data(1011EA) of water conveyance tunnel, we presented rock mass rating system which is objective and easy to use. The constituents of RMR are decided to RQD, condition of discontinuities, groundwater conditions, orientation of discontinuities, intact rock strength, spacing of discontinuities in important order. In each step, we proposed the best multiple regression model for RMR system. And using data which have been collected at other site, we examined that presented multiple regression model was useful.

Deformation phase can be obtained by using Least-Square Fitting. In extraction of phase values, Least-Square Fitting is superior to usual method like as 2, 3, 4-Bucket Algorithm. That can extract almost noise-free phase and retain 2$\pi$discontinuities. But more fringe in phase map, 2$\pi$ discontinuities is destroyed when that is filtered and reconstruction of deformation is not reliable. So, we adapted Least-Square Fitting using an isotropic window in dense fringe. using Sine-Cosine filter give us perfect 2$\pi$discontinuities information. We showed the process and result of extraction of phase map and filtering in this paper.

Waveguide bandpass filters using E-plane or H-plane discontinuities have been used in many satellite communication systems. Since the transmitter and receiver of such systems tend to be getting smaller, components such as bandpass filters must also be reduced in size. In this paper, in order to reduce the waveguide, itself, of which bandpass filters consist, double plane step waveguide discontinuities are considered. They are analyzed using the mode matching method and the genralized scattering parameter of the cascaded structure is calculated. The characteristics of the bandpass filter which is designed using the reduced size waveguide is optimized by OSA90$^{TM}$. The bandpass filter has a good characteristics and smaller size than those made of the E-plane or H-plane step discontinuities.s.

We present applications of MLS-based finite elements, which enable us to easily treat highly complex nonmatching finite element meshes and discontinuities. The shape functions of MLS-based finite element can be easily generated with the aid of Moving Least Square approximation on the parental domain. The major advantage includes that the position of element nodes as well as the number of the element nodes can be conveniently adjusted according to the nature of the problems under consideration, so that finite-element mesh is straightforwardly adapted to evolving discontinuities and. interfaces. Furthermore, we show that the present MLS-based finite elements are efficiently applied for elastic-plastic deformations, wherein the implicit constraint of incompressibility should be properly handled.
This paper deals with frequency analysis of Euler-Bernoulli beams carrying an arbitrary number of Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic dampers, subjected to harmonic loads. Multiple external/internal dampers occurring at the same position along the beam axis, modeling external damping devices and internal damping due to damage or imperfect connections, are considered. The challenge is to handle simultaneous discontinuities of the response, in particular bending-moment/rotation discontinuities at the location of external/internal rotational dampers, shear-force/deflection discontinuities at the location of external/internal translational dampers. Following a generalized function approach, the paper will show that exact closed-form expressions of the frequency response under point/polynomial loads can readily be derived, for any number of dampers. Also, the exact dynamic stiffness matrix and load vector of the beam will be built in a closed analytical form, to be used in a standard assemblage procedure for exact frequency response analysis of frames.

For the circuit modeling of th ecoplanar waveguide (CPW) discontinuities, th eequivalent inductance is analyzed via the 3-dimensional boundary element method. The proposed method utilizes the magnetic scalar potential to obtain the magnetic flux passing sthrough the air-dielectric interfaces of the coplanar waveguide. The boundary integral is simplified by use fo the symmetry when the substrate is composed of the nonmagnetic material. In the numerical analysis, linear basis function and the collocationscheme are employed. The short-end and the step discontinuities are cahracterized through the calculations of the equivalent inductance andd the capacitance. The present method avoids the usual vector formulation and is quite advantageous in the quasi-staic characterization of the CPW disconditnuities.

Rock masses usually contain such features as bedding planes, faults, fissures, fractures, joints and other mechanical defects which, although formed from a wide range of geological processes, posses the common characteristics of low shear strength, negligible tensile strength and high fluid conductivity compared with the surrounding rock material. In the engineering context here, the discontinuities can be the single most important factor governing the deformability, strength and permeability of the rock mass. Moreover, a particularly large and persistent discontinuity could critically affect the stability of any surface or underground excavation. For these reasons, it is necessary to develop a thorough understanding of the geometrical, mechanical and hydrological properties of discontinuities and the way in which these will affect rock mechanics and hence rock engineering.
