Simulation Study of an e-Beam Addressed Liquid Crystal Display for Projection

  • We have carried out a simulation study on an e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display in which the liquid crystal is switched by the electric field of the charge, produced by an electron beam, on the surface of the display. We calculated the electric field produced by the surface charge, the liquid crystal director configuration and the profile of the transmitted light. We studied the factors affecting the resolution of the display and the effect of pretilt angle on the performance of the display. The e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display potentially has the advantages of high resolution and high brightness.

  • We have studied a novel vertical alignment liquid crystal cell. At initial state of a cell with rubbed parallel on top and bottom substrates, the vertically aligned LCs are twisted by $180^{\circ}$. However, after a critical voltage is applied to the cell, the configuration of the LC changes to optically compensated splay form, where the mid-director lies parallel to the substrate and thus the LC has two hybrid alignments around center.

  • We have studied an optically compensated splay (OCS) mode driven by fringe electric field. The OCS LC configuration obtained by applying voltage to vertically aligned LCs shows a dark state when an optic axis of the OCS cell coincides with one of crossed polarizer axis. When the fringe electric field is applied, the LC director rotates in plane above whole electrode surface, giving rise to high transmittance and wide viewing angle simultaneously.

  • We have studied contrast ratio of a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) display as a function of the angle between the polarizer axis and LC director. The results show that a cell configuration in which a polarizer axis facing a light source coincides with a short LC axis has a better process margin in terms of high contrast ratio than that of the cell coinciding with a long LC axis.

  • We have carried a theoretical study on e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display in which the liquid crystal is switched by the electric field of the charge, produced by an electron beam, on the surface of the display. 반사형 Optically Compensated Splay 셀의 전기-광학 특성 (Electro-optic Characteristics of Reflective Optically Compensated Splay Cell)

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of reflective optically compensated splay (R-OCS) cell. The initial configuration of this cell is in splay form such that a mid director lies parallel to the substrate and around it hybrid structure is formed symmetrically so the optically compensation effect exists. Optimized optical configurations could be achieved by using a single polarizer, a quarter-wave film and a cell with quarter-wane retardation. The optimal cell retardation is 0.34 ${\mu}$m, allowing to have large cell gap. The cell provides high contrast ratio of 80:1 at normal direction and the region with contrast ratio over 5:1 covert up to 160$^{\circ}$ horizontally and vertically at all wavelength range.

Increasing Profitability of the Halal Cosmetics Industry using Configuration Modelling based on Indonesian and Malaysian Markets

  • Purpose - Based on complexity theory, this study develops a configurational model to predict the profitability of Halal cosmetics firms in the Indonesian and Malaysian markets. The proposed research model involves two level configurations-industry context and selling strategies-to predict high and low scores of a firm's profitability. The industry context configuration model comprises industry stability, product homogeneity, price sensitivity, and switching cost. Selling strategies include customer-focused, competitor-focused, and margin-focused approaches. Design/methodology - This is the first empirical study that calculates causal models using a combination of industry context and selling strategy factors to predict profitability. Data obtained from the marketing managers of cosmetics firms are used to test the proposed configurational model using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). It contributes to the current knowledge of business marketing by identifying the factors necessary to achieve profitability using analysis of condition (ANC). Findings - The results revealed that unique and distinct models explain the conditions for high and low profitability in the Indonesian and Malaysian halal cosmetic markets. While customer-focused selling strategy is necessary to attain a higher profit in both the markets, margin-focused selling strategy appears to be an essential factor only in Malaysia. Complexity of the interactions of selling strategies with industry factors and differences between across two study markets confirmed that complexity theory can support the research configurational model. The theoretical and practical implications are also illustrated. Originality/value - Despite the rapid growth of the global halal industry, there is little knowledge about the halal cosmetic market. This study contributes to the current literature of the halal market by performing a set of asymmetric analytical approaches using a complex theoretical model. It also deepens our understating of how the Korean firms can approach the Muslim consumer's needs to generate more beneficial turnover/revenue.

Fringe-Field 구동형 새로운 반투과형 수평 배향 액정 디스플레이 (A Novel Transflective Homogeneously Aligned Liquid Crystal Display Driven by Fringe-Field)

  • We have designed transflective liquid crystal display(LCD) associated with in-plane switching of a LC director driven by fringe-field, unlike other LCD mode. Reflective area consists of a λ/2 compensation film and a LC cell with retardation value(dΔn) of λ/4 with their optic axes making an angle of 15$^{\circ}$ and 75$^{\circ}$ against polarizer, respectively. In the transmissive area, top and bottom polarizers are parallel each other, an LC has a dΔn of λ/2, and another λ/2 compensation film is inserted between the LC cell and bottom polarizer. With the configuration, both devices show dark state initially. When an incident light is 550nm, the device shows wide-viewing-angle characteristics such that in the reflective area the contrast ratio target than 5 exists up to 55$^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions and in transmissive area it exists about 100$^{\circ}$ in vortical direction and 110$^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.

빔 틸팅 특성을 갖는 개구 급전 마이크로스트립 안테나 설계 연구 (Design of the Aperture Coupled Microstrip Antenna with Tilted Beam)

  • 본 논문에서는 다이폴 야기 배열 안테나의 동작 원리를 개구 급전 마이크로스트립 패치 안테나에 적용하여 틸티드 빔(tilted beam) 특성을 가지는 패치 안테나를 제안하고 그 특성을 실험적으로 고찰하였다. 제안된 안테나는 구동 패치, 반사 패치, 유도 패치들의 크기, 각 패치 간 간격, 유전체 기판의 두께와 유전율, 그리고 급전 방법 등에 의해 성능 변화 및 특성이 좌우되기 때문에, 본 논문에서는 이득과 빔 틸팅에 큰 영향을 미치는 변수들을 찾아내고 이들에 의한 성능 trade-off을 통해 빔 틸티드 개구 급전 마이크로 스트립 패치 안테나를 설계 제작하고 반사 손실과 빔 패턴에 대한 설계 및 측정 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 제작된 안테나는 공진 주파수인 2.58 GHz에서 앙각 방향에서의 주 빔은 45$^{\circ}$틸티드 특성을 가지고 있으며, 시뮬레이션 빔 패턴과 잘 일치하는 것을 확인하였다.

수직배향액정셀에서의 광학특성향상을 위한 전극설계 (Design of electrodes in the Patterned Vertical Aligned Liquid Crystal Cell for high optical performance)

  • 본 논문에서 높은 투과율을 가질 수 있는 PVA (Patterned Vertical Aligned) 액정 셀의 전극 구조를 제안하였다. 제안한 전극 구조의 결과를 확인하기 위해서 광학적 특성과 그리고 디렉터 모양의 계산은 'TechWiz LCD'라는 상용 시뮬레이터를 사용하였다. 보통 PVA 액정 셀의 투과율은 전극의 모양과 셀갭에 의해 크게 영향을 받는다. 본 논문에서 제안한 전극 구조의 게이트 라인과 데이터 라인 사이의 거리는 기존의 PVA 셀과 같다. 대신 전극의 끝단 (edge) 지역에서의 광손실을 줄이기 위하여 상층부 전극과 하층부 전극의 모양을 수정하였다. 결과를 비교하기 위하여 기존의 PVA 액정 셀과 제안한 PVA 액정 셀의 투과율을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 제안된 구조에 의해서 전극부근에서 발생하는 광학적 손실이 감소되는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다.
