A misfit dislocation generation in InAs epilayers grown on (001) InP substrates (oriented $2^{\circ}$ off (001) toward the [110] direction) using metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition was studied. The InAs film of 17 nm thickness grown at $405^{\circ}C$ showed the three different arrays of dislocations: a straight orthogonal array to the <110> direction, an array to the >100> direction, and an array tilted by a degree of $5\sim45^{\circ}$ from the [110] direction. All of the dislocations had a/2<101> Burgers vectors inclined $45^{\circ}$ to the interface. Upon annealing at $660^{\circ}C$ the InAs films with 60, 140 and 220 nm thicknesses, most of the misfit dislocations became the Lomer type $(\sim100%)$ oriented exactly along the >110> direction. These misfit dislocation spacings were decreased with increasing the InAs thickness up to 220 nm thickness. This phenomena was interpreted by the relationship between the dislocation interaction energy among parallel misfit dislocations and the opposite remnant InAs epilayer strain energy. The distance between misfit dislocations was measured by transmission electron microscopy.
Due to the difficulties associated with the supply of steel plates, hot rolled coil (Steel grade: SM490A) is considered fur structural materials in replace of the existing SWS50A-M1. However, it is found that SM490A exhibits a significant anisotropy in terms of impact energy with respect to transverse and longitudinal directions. In this study, an experimental investigation is carried out to examine the relationship between the anisotropy in impact values and the fatigue strengths of SM490A with respect to the rolling direction of test specimens. All test specimens failed around 1,500,000 cycles regardless of the test specimen direction. Therefore, it is found that the anisotropy in impact energy is not related to the fatigue strength of the materials considered in this study. However, the transverse direction specimen showed more rapid brittle fracture mode compared to that of longitudinal direction specimen, and this appears to be related to the lower impact values in transverse direction.
In a previous study, a technique for measuring wind speed and direction by using a roll-rotating three-axis ultrasonic anemometer was proposed and verified by wind tunnel tests. In the tests, instead of a roll sensor, roll angle was trimmed to make no up flow in the transformed wind speeds. Verification was done in point of the residual error of the rotation effect treatment. In this study, roll angle was measured from the roll motor encoder and the transformed wind speed and direction on the test section axis were compared with the ones provided to the test section. As a result, up to yaw $20^{\circ}$ at a wind speed of 12 m/sec or over, the RMS error of wind speed was within the double of the ultrasonic anemometer error. But at yaw $30^{\circ}$, it was over the double of the ultrasonic anemometer error. Regardless of wind speed, at yaw $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, the direction error was within the double of the ultrasonic anemometer error. But at yaw $10^{\circ}$ or less, it was within the error of the ultrasonic anemometer itself. This is a very favorable characteristic to be used for wind turbine yaw control.
One of the highly reliable object tracking methods is to trace objects by associating objects detected by deep learning. The detected object is represented by a rectangular box. The box has information such as location and size. Since the tracker has motion information of the object in addition to the location and size, knowing additional information about the motion of the detected box can increase the reliability of object tracking. In this paper, we present a new method of reliably estimating the moving direction of the detected object in underground parking lot. First, the frame difference image is binarized for detecting motion energy, change due to the object motion. Then, a cumulative binary image is generated that shows how the motion energy changes over time. Next, the moving direction of the detected box is estimated from the accumulated image. We use a new cost function to accurately estimate the direction of movement of the detected box. The proposed method proves its performance through comparative experiments of the existing methods.
The spanwise growth of turbulence structures in turbulent pipe flow was investigated using the direct numerical simulation data of Re𝜏 = 544, 934 and 3008. Two-point correlations and pre-multiplied energy spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuations were examined along the spanwise direction. The arclength direction is defined as r𝛳, which is useful for an analogy with the spanwise direction for channels or boundary layers; here, r and 𝛳 are the radial distance from the core and the azimuthal angles, respectively. Both analyses showed that the arclength scales increased with increasing the wall-normal distance. It showed that the coherent structures were confined in the core region due to the crowding effect of a circular pipe geometry. The pipe flow simulation could describe a realistic geometrical flow along the azimuthal direction, unlike the simulations of turbulent channel or boundary layer flow using periodic boundary conditions along the spanwise direction. The present results provided the spanwise organization of energy-containing motions over a broad range of scales in turbulent pipe flow.
One of the main problems concerning the shallow seismic survey is how to generate high frequency signals with large amplitudes using small seismic sources. If one could focus the seismic energy in the direction of the survey line, it will be much helpful in identifying the first break. In this research, we have used hammer as an impulsive source and compared the signal powers generated by different shapes of the hammer plates: circular, square, and rectangular. The experiment was conducted by calculating the power spectral density function to compare the frequency spectrum and signal power. In the direction perpendicular to the long side of the rectangular plate, the largest seismic energy with the highest frequency was achieved even with the same weights of hammer plates. Our conclusion is that it is more efficient to use a rectangular plate than a circular (or square) one when conducting a 2-D shallow seismic survey.
The power flow analysis(PFA) has been performed to analyze the vibration of coupled plates excited by a point force in an arbitrry direction. The energy governing equations for longitudinal, shear and flexural waves were solved to predict the vibrational energy density and intensity. The wave transmission approach was used to consider the mode conversion at the joints of the coupled plates. Numerical results for energy density and intensity on the coupled plates were presented. Comparison of the results by PFA with exact results showed that PFA can be an effective tool to predict the spatial variation of the vibrational energy and intensity on the coupled plates at high frequencies.
Static and dynamic crushing behaviors of composite box tube show the difference with those of metal tube. This paper investigates the characteristics of static and dynamic crushing test which were conducted to characterize the energy absorption and collapse mode of composite box tubes. Sixteen kinds of tube specimens were fabricated from[0/90] woven Glass/Epoxy fabric and autoclave cured. Axial crushing tests were performed using Instron and Dynatup Impact Tester. It is shown that collapse mode and energy absorption capacity can vary according to the aspect ratio, length, loading rate, lay-up direction of fabric, and trigger geometry of the composite box tube.
The amount of incident rays over inclination according to direction has been widely utilized as important data m installing solar thermal systems. To optimize the incident solar radiation, the slope, that is the angle between the plane surface in question and the horizontal, and the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar thermal systems. This is because the performance of the solar thermal systems in much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing that factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment on the moving route of the sun have been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. After all, the standard for designing highly optimized solar thermal systems will be provided for designers and employees working in the solar collector related industries.
