In order to quantify the anisotropic properties of rock included joints and shear behavior in joint surface, the mold is Produced for rock joint surface using gypsum Plaster and Peformed for replicated joint models made of cement mortar. Rock sample is measured using mechanical profilometer before testing and their result is expressed quantitatively. The statistical parameters and the fractal dimension by fractal theory for roughness is investigated its coordinate value for numerical process. The shear strength to the shear displacement in low level normal stress ismaintained or increased in most joint models. Their results present that this relationship is depended several roughness properties in joint model for natural rock joint. The relationship between the shear strength and the Properties for profiles estimated by some statistical parameter in roughness has the low correlation and is not constant. The result between the data for direct shear test and using Barton's equation, Barton's equation has not the effectiveness for the effect of anisotropy and has not suitable to recognizing the properties for joint surface. It means that JRC has not the properties of anisotropic rock surface. The fractal dimension is well correlated with the data of direct shear test than those of JRC. New experimental formulae using fractal dimension is comported with the anisotropic properties for direct shear test.

This study aims to derive the optimal condition that ensures the monolithicity of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), through the evaluation of bonding shear performance with respect to the time of cold joint occurrence during the placement. From the direct shear test, while the normalized bonding shear strength reduction of UHPC with the delay time of 15 minutes was the lowest at around 8%, a dramatic degradation of bonding shear performance was observed after 15 minutes. XRD analysis of the middle and surface sections was performed in order to analyze the composition of the thin film formed at the surface of UHPC, and as a result, the main ingredient appeared to be SiO2 from the XRD pattern of middle and surface sections, which is believed to be the result of the rising of SiO2-based filler, used as anadmixture in this study, toward the surface, due to its low specific gravity.

An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the shear performance at the interface composed of structural laminates and concrete. The main variables are the number of CLT layers and the shape of the shear connector. The number of CLT layers consisted of 3 and 5 layers. A total of 6 test specimens for shear performance evaluation were prepared in the form of a shear connector, a direct screw type and a vertically embedded type. As a result of the experiment, similar behavior was shown in all specimens, regardless of the number of layers, including direct screw type (SC series) and vertically embedded type (VE series). The behavior at the joint surface was damaged due to the occurrence of initial shear cracks, expansion of shear groove cracks, and splaying at the interface after the maximum load. After the maximum load, the shear strength decreased gradually due to the effect of the shear connector. It can be seen that the shear strength of all specimens is determined by shear and compression stress failure of concrete at the interface of the notch joint.
Surface roughness profiles were measured from 19 joint samples using a laser scanner, and Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were calculated from 30 sections in each sample. Although JRC values varied with the location of the section, the average JRC values from any three sections provides an adequate representation of the average JRC value for the entire surface well. Direct shear tests were performed on nine joints reproduced using molds of real joints in samples of gypsum. The peak friction angles (${\phi}_p$) showed a linear relationship with the average JRC values, yielding the following relationship: ${\phi}_p=41.037+1.046JRC$. However, the shear strengths measured by direct shear tests differed from those calculated using Barton's criterion. The relationship between calculated from direct shear tests and JRC measured from joint surfaces is defined as $JRC_R=f{\cdot}JRC$, and the correction coefficient f is was calculated as $f=3.15JRC^{-0.5}$, as calculated by regression. A modified shear-strength criterion, is proposed using the correction coefficient, ${\tau}={\sigma}_n{\cdot}tan(3.15JRC^{0.5}{\bullet}{\log}_{10}\frac{JCS}{{\sigma}_n}+{\phi}_b)$. This criterion may be effective in calculating the shear strength of moderately weathered rock joints and highly weathered rock joints with low strength and ductile behavior.
In order to utilize treads of waste tire as reinforcement material it is necessary to know the interface friction angle between tread surfaces and soil and tensile strength of connection joint of tire treads. In this research large direct shear tests were performed to get the interface friction angle between the inner and outer surfaces of treads and soil for different degree of compaction. From the large direct shear tests, the ratio of interface friction angle to the shear friction angle of sand, ${\delta}/{\phi}$, were 1.06 in outside surface of tire tread and 0.93 in inside surface of tire tread. For weathered granite soil the ratio of interface friction angle was 0.98 and 0.92 for outside and inside of tread, respectively. Also tensile tests were performed using universal testing machine for the connection joint of treads and Tirecell units using bolts. The tensile strength of connection joint increased with the number of bolts and with the sizes of washers. Connection by polypropylene ropes showed lower strength than those of bolts.

Structural performance and durability of ultra high performance concrete could demonstrate optimal performance when unity was kept. Accordingly, it is necessary to involve the characteristics and quantitative surface treatment at the same time in order to retain oneness of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete(UHPC) according to construction joint occurrence. Therefore, this study derives a reasonable surface treatment method in a material's point of view through the shear adhesion performance evaluation according to the construction joints surface processing method as a part for securing the adhesion performance of the construction joints when casting UHPC. 180 MPa of required average strength was used for mix of UHPC and surface treatment method was set to totally 7 level that MN, GR-10-0, GR-20-0, GR-30-0, SH-30-5, SH-30-10. After the specimen were manufactured to a size of $150{\times}150{\times}150mm$, Direct shear test was performed to evaluate the shear adhesion strength. As a result, it was confirmed that the adhesion performance was improved when executing a surface treatment for the construction joint interface and standard of failure mode of specimen was over Type C. Also, It was considered that interface of cross section and depth of concavo-convex should be concerned.
The present article discusses the effect of the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress on the failure behavior of the planar non-persistent open joints. Totally, 38 models were prepared using plaster and dimensions of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}15cm$. The bridge area occupied $45cm^2$, $90cm^2$ and $135cm^2$ out of the shear surface. The number of rock bridges increase in fixed area. Two similar samples were prepared on every variation in the rock bridges and tested for direct shear strength under two high and low normal loads. The results indicated that the failure pattern and the failure mechanism is mostly influenced by the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface and normal stress so that the tensile failure mode change to shear failure mode by increasing in the value of introduced parameters. Furthermore, the shear strength and shear stiffness are closely related to the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress.
The mechanical characteristics of a fault gouge from near Mt. Kumjung in Kumjung-Gu, Busan, were estimated from laboratory tests on different joint models. Fault gouge samples and joint samples in biotite granite were obtained from boreholes in the study area that had penetrated small faults associated with the Dongnae and Yangsan faults. XRD and SEM analyses revealed that for the fault gouge consists of several clay minerals with tabular structure (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, sericite), which could cause the considerable reduction of shear strength when wet. The shear strength of the fault gouge was obtained from direct shear tests of the fault gouge itself and from direct shear tests of several natural/artificial joint surfaces coated with fault gouge. The results indicate that the reduction of shear strength is more abrupt for the joint surfaces coated with fault gouge compared with uncoated joint surfaces, and that the friction angle of the fault gouge between joint surfaces is much lower than the internal friction angle of the fault gouge itself. Fault gouges in contact with rock, therefore, could have a stronger negative effect on the stability of structures in rock masses than the fault gouge itself.
Rock joint surface roughness, which is known to be one of the most important factors for defining shear strength of rock mass, has been researched in various methods. However, approaches to separate a roughness into two groups (primary and secondary) for evaluating the roughness have been rarely performed. In this study, elements of secondary roughness were eliminated through direct shear testing with tensile joint specimen and they were quantified with joint parameters. It is revealed that roughness parameters decrease with increasing the normal stress and sampling intervals, except for the case in which the normal stress is larger than 1.5 MPa. Also it is analyzed that ratio of area reduction in the opposite direction of shearing decreases with increasing the roughness parameter.

Roughness of rock joint has generally been characterized based upon geometrical aspects of a two-dimensional surface profile. The appropriate description of joint roughness, however, should consider the features of roughness mobilization at contact areas under normal and shear loads. In this study, direct shear tests were conducted on the replicas of tensile fractured gneiss joints and the influence of the shear direction on the shear behavior and effective roughness was examined. In this procedure, a joint surface was represented as a group of triangular planes, and the steepness of each plane was characterized using the concepts of the active and inactive micro-slope angles. The contact areas at peak strength which were estimated by a numerical method showed that the locations of the contact areas were mainly dependent on the distribution of the micro-slope angle and the shear behavior of joint was dominated by only the fractions with active micro-slope angles. Therefore, a three-dimensional coefficient for the quantification of rock joint roughness is proposed based on the distribution of active micro-slope angle: active roughness coefficient, $C_r$. Comparison of the active roughness coefficient and the peak shear strength obtained from the experiment suggests that the active roughness coefficient is the effective parameter to quantify the surface roughness and estimate the shear behavior of rock joint.
