  • This study started from the questions on how the selection of the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature' was repeatedly reported, and whose voice was emphasized on which perspective in regional daily newspapers. This is a subject that received the attention of the media with the tag of 'fraud on a national scale'. The results of this study showed that there was no difference among newspapers in all frames excluding the frame of public confidence in relation to the N7W Foundation. Furthermore, after examining the change before and after six media companies' conclusion of MOUs, a significant difference was discovered between newspapers concerning the frame of public confidence pertaining to the N7W Foundation. However, no significant difference was discovered in all frames after the MOUs were concluded. The tone of the press mostly displayed a positive or supporting perspective, and almost no negative or critical reports were published. Second, 68.0% of all the articles displayed use direct quotes. The speakers of direct quotes were mostly from official organizations that initiated the selection event for the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature', and almost no civilians or representatives from civil social groups were quoted. On the other hand, direct quotes of anonymous sources were used rather frequently, and most of these sources were confirmed to be official sources and related parties that initiated the selection event for the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature'. As a result, regional daily newspapers displayed support and advocated for the voices of the entities that initiated the selection event for the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature', including the district government, by emphasizing and repeating their perspectives in the newspaper coverage.

  • As a result of study on the names of local medicinal herbs which described in Chobu (Chapter of Grass) of Korean medical book Bonchojeonghwa, we came to the following conclusions. 1) Compared with the existing domestic medical books' local medicinal herb names, those of Donguibogam had the closest relationship with Bonchojeonghwa. Out of local medicinal herb names described in Chobu of Bonchojeonghwa, a third is only shown in Bonchojeonghwa, and another third is same as those in Donguibogam. 2) The notation of local medicinal herb names in Bonchojeonghwa is not so consistent as Donguibogam. In Bonchojeonghwa, we can see many examples of inconsistent notations over the same thing. Moreover, there are some examples, which are suspected to be an expression of dialect. 3) In spite of close similarity between the names of local medicinal herbs in Bonchojeonghwa and Donguibogam, the author of Bonchojeonghwa doesn't seem to directly refer to or quote Donguibogam, because it doesn’t make sense that the author of Bonchojeonghwa intentionally referred to regular, consistent Donguibogam in irregular, inconsistent way. 4) In spite of very low possibility of direct reference or quotation among Bonchojeonghwa, Donguibogam and Bangyakhappyon, there are many examples of common format in its notation way on local medicinal herbs, which cannot be explained only as coincidence. And it tells us that there must be another publication which had been referred to or quoted by the said three medical books. 5) From the fact that there are a lot of examples of local medicinal herb names which doesn't show palatalization, or labialization, the names of local medicinal herbs described in Bonchojeonghwa must be the expression around 17th century.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the issues and implications for landscape design education in Korean landscape architecture by analyzing the National Exhibition of Korean Landscape Architecture(NEKLA). This study analyzed the suggested topics and selected site as well as the commentary that appeared in the NEKLA's award-winning book published from 2004 to 2014. Results of the study are as follows: First, topics of NEKLA are not only competition guidelines but related to exploring new area and role of Korean landscape architecture. Second, most dealing with site is 'industrial heritage and regeneration space' and 'green infrastructure'. In more recent years, a larger variety of sites were addressed. Third, site locations are concentrated in metropolitan areas, and awards and participation of the non-metropolitan universities was very low. Fourth, seven criteria can be applied in a general landscape design competition such as 'newness of the concept(idea)', 'logicality of the design process', 'selection of site fidelity of analysis(interpretation)', 'presentation and completion of the master plan', 'consistency with the theme', 'linkage of concepts and results' and 'feasibility'. The evaluation criteria are increasing the sophistication of the design language to provide useful suggestions on how to find design education methods. Its implications are as follows: First, training is essential to derive innovative ideas, but it should avoid excessive concept-oriented education. Second, design education may include instruction on how to define the problems related with the site. Third, more emphasis on design logic is essential to transform the innovative concept to actual results. Fourth, 'slick images' unrelated to design should be suppressed. Fifth, practice is needed to solve the topics addressed in the design process of education. Sixth, 'feasibility' and 'creative thinking' are necessary to recognize a reciprocal relationship that is helpful to one another. This study uses direct quote commentary to minimize the subjectivity of the researcher and to trace issues of the contemporary landscape architecture more directly and vividly. This study is a record waiting for another review as meta-criticism. In this regard this study, the landscape architect of the next times will have a mean that historical records to review the current thinking of the landscape theory and design.
