For this study, we carried out a field survey on the analysis for the spatial distributions of phytoplankton community in the eleven areas of the Korean South Sea during the early summer of 2018. The results from the study showed that the phytoplankton community consisted of 56 genera and 105 species showing by diatoms with 52.4%, dinoflagellates with 40.0% and other phytoflagellates with 7.6%. The cell density of the phytoplankton ranged from 5.5 to 593.2 cells mL-1. The species number and cell density of the phytoplankton were high in the eastern waters of the South Sea and low in the western one. The phytoplankton community showed the characteristics of being dominated by the diatoms except in the Geumpo of Namhae, Ocheon-dong of Yeosu and Oenarodo of Goheung. The dominant species of the phytoplankton community were the centric diatoms, Skeletonema costatum-like species (ls), except for the Ocheon-dong and Chungdo of Wando. However, the Ocheon-dong was dominated by toxic dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium catenatum by 41.1% dominance. On the other hand, Keumpo and Oenarodo was by dinoflagellate, Tripos fusus more than 12% dominance in the surface layer. The spatial distribution of the phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Korean South Sea in the early summer were determined by the supply of nutrients through precipitation.

Relationship between plankton assemblage and environmental factors in a semi-closed Chunsu Bay was examined. Temporal changes in phytoplankton assemblage was rather drastic than those found in most Korean coastal area in the Yellow Sea primarily due to the seawater temperature (T) and nutrient input from the dikes nearby. Freshwater discharge seemed to cause winter time increase of Diatoms (February) and summer time increase of Dinoflagellates at surface (July to August). Structural change in cell size with time was also found in Diatom. Zooplankton community structure was also changed with season probably due to the food concentration, seawater temperature and salinity (S). From principal component analysis (PCA) of zooplankton distribution, it was postulated that seasonal environmental changes such as T and S could explain about 32% of variability in zooplankton distribution along with phytoplankton cell numbers, while freshwater discharge could explain about 17%. Comparing with past data of 1985-1986, 1991-1992, the distributional patterns and percent composition of major species, Acartia hongi, Paracalanus parvus sensu lato and Centropages abdominalis, were similar. However, the abundances have been increased more than three times. The composition of other taxa than copepods showed significant changes.
A field survey and experiment on aquaculture in Costa Rica including Nicoya Gulf was carried out for a month, December $2{\sim}28$, 1981. 1) Air temperature was $27{\sim}32^{\circ}C$, water temperature, $28{\sim}29.5^{\circ}C$ and salinity, $20{\sim}28.5\%$ both in the surface and 5 m layer on December 22, 1981. 2) Dissolved oxygen plentiful, $7.3{\sim}9.95\;ml/l$. 3) Mean precipitation for the past ten years in Nicoya Gulf area was $1298.6{\sim}2196.3$ mm near Puntarenas area and rainy days a year was 137.7, Most rainfalls was concentrated from May to November, the rainy season. 4) Precipitation in main oyster farms near Chungmu, Korea was 1836.0mm a year and it was similar to that of Costa Rica. 5) Diatoms were 16 species belonged to 13 genera and dinoflagellates, 3 species belonged to 2 genera. Standing crops was $639{\sim}130,211\;cells/l$ and dominant species were Chaeteocros curvisetus, Chaetoceros decipiens, Nitzschia serata. Thalassiothrix mediterranca, a tropical esturary species, was found. 6) Nicoya Gulf has the good environmental factors in the water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and planktons, and it is desirable to experiment and culture the oyster (Crassostrea rhrizophorae).
Samples were collected from five stations in February, May, July, and September 2004 to investigate seasonal variations in the phytoplankton community and the relationship between dominant genera and environmental factors in Asan Bay. In February, microphytoplankton contributed 80% to the total chlorophyll a. Diatom dominated the phytoplankton community, accounting for 85.9% of the total cell number, followed by dinoflagellates (6%). Dominant species were Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira spp. Abundant diatom, including S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp., may be affected by water temperature and silicate at Station 1 and 2 in February 2004. In May, the nanophytoplankton contribution to total phytoplankton was higher than in other seasons. However, abundance of S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp. decreased, since the growth of S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp. might be limited by phosphates (P) resulting from low P concentration and a high DIN:DIP ratio in the outer region. In July, dominant phytoplankton groups were diatom (39%), cryptophyceae (28%), and cyanophyceae (20%). Dominant genera were Oscillatoria spp. and phytoflagellate of a monad type in the inner region (Station 1 and 2), whereas S. costatum was dominant in the outer region (Station 4 and 5). In September, dominant phytoplankton were diatom (69%) and cryptophyceae (28%). Dominant genera were phytoflagellate of the monad type, S. costatum in the inner region, while Chaetoceros spp. was dominant in the outer region.
In order to clarify water quality, dynamics and structure of phytoplankton communities, and red tides, the present study was carried out monthly from July to September 1998 at 19 stations in Deukryang Bay. Water temperature varied from 24.$0^{\circ}C$ to 28.6$^{\circ}C$, and salinities ranged from 25.0$\textperthousand$ to 28.6$\textperthousand$. During red tides in July, chlorophyll-$\alpha$ contents were rather high in August, it showed that phytoplankton controlled primary production in this bay. Phytoplankton was composed of 89 diatoms, 19 dinoflagellates, and 3 silicoflagellates. Phytoplankton standing crops varied from a minimum of 1.3$\times$10$^4$cells/ι(Sept., St. 17) to a maximum of 3.8$\times$10$^{6}$ cells/ι (July, St. 10). Red tides occurred in July when the standing crops averaged 1.8$\times$10$^{6}$ cells/ι. Leading the causative organisms of red tide were Prorocentrun minimum in the upper bay, Chaetoceros curvisetus in the mouth and middle part of the bay, Ceratium furca and Thazassio- sira sp. around Nokdong Harbour. Concentration of nutrients such as nitrogen was high in the upper bay, during red tides, water temperatures varied from 23.8$^{\circ}C$ to 29.7$^{\circ}C$ and salinity were 23.l$\textperthousand$ to 27.0$\textperthousand$.
Phytoplankton samples for this study were collected by Van Dorn Sampler at 28 oceanographic stations in the southern waters of Korea in February, April and August, 1988 to characterize the distribution and species composition of phytoplankton and their relation to the movement of water masses. During the study periods, phytoplankton standing crops in the southern waters were maximum in April and minimum in February. When the geographical distribution and abundance of the phytoplankton were considered, the highest standing crops were found near the front zone formed between Cheju Island and Tsushima Island. Therefore, their abundance depends ell the location of the front zone. On the other hand, there were relatively low standing crops in the open sea off the coastal area from the front zone in February and August. The cause of the unusal low standing crops found in August at the station 205/01, the central part of the coastal area of the southern waters where the largest standing crops occurred in February and April, seems to be due to the intrusion of Tsushima warm waters. This is because the waters at the station have high temperature and salinity, poor dissolved oxygen and nutrient salts, which are identical to the characteristics of proper Tsushima warm waters. It seems that these warm waters may affect the poor productivity in this area. Seventy-two species in thirty-three genera of the phytoplankton were indentified from the samples. Among them, 61 species in 27 genera belong to diatoms and 12 species in 7 genera to dinoflagellates. The largest number of phytoplankton species occurred in August while the largest number of the tells in April. Predominant species were Eucampia zodiacus in February, Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus in April and Chaetoceros affinis in August. Eucampia zodiacus which was dominant in February and April seems to be a indicator of the southern coastal waters of Korea and mixed waters west of Cheju Island.
To characterize the community structure and spatial distribution of phytoplankton, observations on seawater temperature, salinity, nutrients, primary productivity and abundance and species composition of phytoplankton were made in the polar front region and its neighborhood off the east coast of Korea in summer 1990. Among the 96 taxa identified, Rhizosolenia setigera and Thalassionema nitzschioides were the most dominant species. The assemblage at the surface and 50 m depth was quite different in the northern inshore part of the study area but similar in the southern and offshore part. Principal component analysis by the species abundance showed that the phytoplankton consisted of the communities representing the surface of the northern inshore part with the neritic-warm dinoflagellates, the Northern Korean Cold Water with the cold water diatoms and the southern and offshore part, which seems to represent the Eastern Korean Warm Water, with the warm water diatoms. At the frontal region, diatoms were mixed with warm and cold water species. Primary productivity and phytoplankton standing crops were higher at the front than the neighboring waters. Nutrients were markedly high at the Northern Korean Cold Water. Horizontal advection of the Northern Korean Cold Water accompanied by nutrient supply seems to contribute to the high phytoplankton biomass at the front.

This study describes the spatio-temporal distributions in phytoplankton community such as species composition, standing crops and dominant species from April to November 2008 in the Jeju Marine Ranching Area (JMRA). A total of 106 species of phytoplankton belonging to 63 genera was identified. In particular, diatoms and dinoflagellates were occupied more than 61% and 35% of total species, respectively. The annual dominant species were Skeletonema costatum-like species(ls) in April, Torodinium teredo, Cylindrotheca closterium, Scrippsiella trochoidea in June, S. costatum - ls, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Ebria tripartita in September and Corethron pennatum, Dictyocha fibura, Neoceratium teres in November. Phytoplankton cell density ranged between $0.6cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ in June and $64.0cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ in April. It fluctuated with an annual mean of $11.7cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ between the lowest value of $0.9cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ in November and the highest value of $37.0cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ by S. costatum -ls in April. Diversity index in September was higher than diatom blooming seasons in April. According to the phytoplankton community structure, the biological oceanographic characteristics of the JMRA was characterized by nanoplankton during a year. That is, primary production is deemed to have a higher possibility of being adjusted by a reproduction by material cycle in the ecosystems than nutrients supply from the lands.
This study describes about the spatio-temporal distributions in phytoplankton community such as species composition, standing crop and dominant species from May 2006 to February 2007 in the Jangsu bay and the northwestern parts of Gamak bay. Based on the principal component analysis (PCA) of the environmental factors as well as biological parameters, the bio-oceanographical characteristics were analysed. A total of 83 species of phytoplankton belonging to 47 genera were identified. Whereas diatoms and dinoflagellates occupied more than 65% and 30% of total species, respectively. The annual dominant species were Chaetoceros affinis, Paralia sulcata and Bacillaria paxillifera in spring, Chaetoceros didymus, Ch. affinis and Octactis octonaria in summer, Skeletonema costatum-like species and B. paxillifera in autumn. Moreover phytoplankton cell density was ranged between 3.1 $cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ in spring and 521.0 $cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ in winter. It fluctuated with an annual mean of 76.0 $cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ between the lowest value of 7.6 $cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ in spring and the highest value of 220.2 $cells{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ by Skeletonema costatum-like species in winter. Briefly, the phytoplankton cell density in the mixing seasons was higher in comparison with the other seasons. According to the PCA, the biological oceanographic characteristics of the Jangsu bay was affected by the introduction of outside seawater particularly in temperature increasing seasons, and the other seasons, it may be described the light intensity, and mix between inner and outer bay sea waters.

Seismic interpretation was carried out based on biostratigraphy of Fukue-1 well in Japan side of the Domi Basin and compared with the Cheju Basin and Tertiary basins in north-west Kyushu. East China Sea Basin including Domi Basin began to develope in the latest Cretaceous$\sim$Paleocene related to rifting. The basin was filled with a thick package of syn-rift sediments during Paleocene to Oligocene and was under post-rift stage effected by transtenssion during Miocene. Previous studies suggest that the basin had been mostly filled with Miocene formation (>3 km), but the Miocene formation is interpreted to be comparatively thin in this study. The thickness of the Miocene formation varies from tens of meters to hundreds of meters and become thicker to the south-west of Cheju Basin. The index taxa of the Oligocene$\sim$Eocene nannofossils and dinoflagellates found in the Cheju Basin and Tertiary basins in north-west Kyushu also corroborate the result of this study.
