In this study, the local displacement and moment characteristics of a plate stiffened with closed ribs are analyzed according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. The analyzed results of various stiffened plates under square distributed load show that the effect of the loading panel width to the local behavior is dominant but that of the next panel width is very small. And the local behavior of reference stiffened plates can be expressed by the angle between the plate and the rib, and that of other stiffened plates can be obtained by multiplying ratio functions of the loading panel width, plate thickness, rib thickness, rib height and next panel width and they give good results. Applying ratio functions to other loading sizes shows that the applicability of ratio functions except for the loading panel width is proved and the modified ratio functions of the loading panel width improve error ratios. Therefore, the local displacement and moments of a plate stiffened with closed ribs can easily achieve proper results regardless of the dimensions using ratio functions proposed in this study.
The purpose of this study is to formulate the local displacement and moments of a plate stiffened with open ribs according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. Analyzed results of various plates stiffened with rectangular and reverse T ribs show that the effect of the lower flange to the local behavior is very small, so the local behavior can be expressed by ratio functions of the rib space, web thickness, web height and plate thickness and the ratio functions of rectangular and reverse T ribs can be unioned. The application of ratio functions to other types of stiffened plates shows that the increment of the error ratio is so small compared with examples of this study that the applicability of this study is proved.

In this paper, a comparative study of metallic and non-metallic stiffened plates under a lateral pressure load is performed using conventional statistically determinate and SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) optimisation approaches. Initially, a metallic flat-bar stiffened plate is exemplified from the superstructure of a marine vessel and, subsequently, its structural topology is varied as hat-section stiffened FRP(Fibre Reinforced Plastics) single skin plates and monocoque FRP sandwich plates having a PVC foam core. These proposed structural alternatives are analysed using elastic closed-form solutions and SQP optimisation method under stress and deflection limits obtained from practice to calculate and optimise geometry dimensions and weights. Results obtained from the comparative study provide useful information for marine designers especially at the preliminary design stage where various building materials and structural configurations are dealt with.

This research analyzes the dynamic stability of stiffened plates on elastic foundations using the finite element method. For analyzing the stiffened plates, both the Mindlin plate theory and Timoshenko beam-column theory were applied. In application of the finite element method, 8-nodes serendipity element system and 3-nodes finite element system were used for plate and beam elements, respectively Elastic foundations were modeled as the Pasternak foundations in which the continuity effect of foundation is considered. In order to verify the theory of this study, solutions obtained by this analysis were compared with the classical solutions in open literature and experimental solutions. The dynamic stability legions of stiffened plates on Pasternak foundations were determined according to changes of in-plane stresses, foundation parameters and dimensions of stiffener.
In this study, to improve on the inaccurate results of the orthotropic plate analysis, we aim to propose a modified coefficient of the orthotropic flexural rigidity for stiffened plates with rectangular ribs considering the dimensions of ribs. The sensitivity of the flexural rigidity and the maximum displacement according to the dimensions of stiffened plates were analyzed and the parametric study on the modified coefficient of the orthotropic flexural rigidity of stiffened plates was performed. The results show that the ratio of modified coefficients can be expressed as a function for each rib height, space and thickness regardless of plate thickness and the modified flexural rigidity can be easily estimated from the ratio functions of modified coefficients. The application of the coefficient function to various types of stiffened plates with different boundary conditions, aspect ratios, rib arrangement and loading size shows that the proposed function improves the accuracy of the orthotropic plate analysis compared with the results of the reference. Therefore, the orthotropic plate analysis of stiffened plates with rectangular ribs can easily achieve more accurate results using the coefficient function proposed in this study.

The aim of this study is to derive an empirical formula for predicting ultimate strength of plates and stiffened plates subjected to uniaxial compression. The test data of ultimate compressive strength for unstiffened and stiffened plates previously obtained by others have been collected. Many test data are necessary so that the derived formula will be available in wide range of plate dimensions. Additional collapse tests for a plate specimen with one flat bar stiffener, varying dimensions of plate and stiffener were performed in this study. On the basis of the present and previous experimental data, a more useful empirical formula than the existing ones was derived by applying the least square method.

This paper deals with two contents: first, distributions of plate slenderness ratios, stiffened plate slenderness ratios, and stiffener slenderness ratios, which include dimensions and material variables of stiffened plates, of stiffened plates of large-sized in-service vessels, and, second, comparison of compressive strengths. The investigated vessels consist of 59 tankers, 49 bulkers, 28 product carriers, 15 container carriers, and 12 multi-purpose vessels. The tankers are ranged from handymax class to VLCC and larger than Suezmax class. The sizes of the bulkers are 20K to 200K deadweight. The maximum size of containers is less than 5000TEU class. Two parameters for normal distributions of the slenderness ratios (mean and standard deviation) are suggested and probable ranges of the slenderness ratios are also graphically presented. The ultimate strengths of the stiffened plates are presented using the various simplified formulas and nonlinear FEAs. As well, average compressive strength curves, which are necessary for the estimation of the hull girder moment capacities, are proposed. It is proved that formulas for stiffened plates in CSR overestimate slightly in overall average strain range. Mode5 formula (plate buckling mode) in CSR show unreasonably conservative results with respect to the ultimate strengths rather than post-ultimate average compressive strengths.
In this paper, the modified method of orthotropic rigidities for stiffened plates with open ribs is proposed to solve the problem of the inaccurate results of the orthotropic plate analysis according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. In analyzing various types of stiffened plates with open ribs using the isotropic and orthotropic plate element, orthotropic plates are found to gave smaller maximum displacements compared to isotropic plates in a range that is smaller than the special rigidity ratio and reversely. Therefore, obtaining a more accurate solution of the orthotropic plate analysis requires modifying the orthotropic rigidities of stiffened plates according to the rigidity ratio. This study presents two modified methods using the displacement function and the displacement ratio. The application of the two methods improves the accuracy of the results of the orthotropic plate analysis, although the modified method using the displacement ratio is better than the method using the displacement function in terms of serviceability and safety. The comparison with the experimental example shows that the proposed modified method improves accuracy. Therefore, the orthotropic plate analysis of stiffened plates with open ribs can achieve more accurate results using the proposed method in this study.
In this study, stiffened plates with open ribs are analyzed to estimate and formulate the local displacement and local moments according to square loading sizes. For the local behaviors of plates stiffened with rectangular and reverse T ribs, the ratio functions according to the dimensions of stiffened plates are obtained at each square loading size. Analytical results show that values of the basic stiffened plates are different but the ratio functions of each square loading size are similar and the difference of the ratio functions between rectangular ribs and reverse T ribs are small, so the ratio functions can be unified by integrating the loading sizes regardless of the rib type. The application of the unioned ratio functions to L type ribs and rectangular loading shows good accuracies. Therefore, the local behaviors of plates stiffened with open ribs can easily be obtained by using the unioned ratio functions proposed in this study.

The ultimate capacity of end-plate connection is investigated through nonlinear finite element analysis. The example models are divided into stiffened case and unstiffened one. The refined finite element models are analyzed by utilizing a general purpose structural analysis computer program ADINA and the moment-rotation relationships of the connection are determined. The results are compared with the regression equation deduced by Krishnamurthy. It is planned to deduce a bilinear regression equation through a parametric study on various dimensions of the connection.
