Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the fractal dimension and radiographic image brightness of periapical radiograph were useful in predicting osteoporosis. Materials and Methods : Ninety-two postmenopausal women were classified as normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis group according to the bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae and periapical radiographs of both mandibular molar areas were taken. The ROIs of 358 areas were selected at periapical and interdental areas and fractal dimension and radiographic image brightness were measured. Results : The fractal dimension in normal group was significantly higher than that in osteoporosis group at periapical ROI (P < 0.05). The radiographic image brightness in normal group was higher than that in osteopenia and osteoporosis group. There was significant difference not only between normal and osteopenia group (P < 0.05) but also within osteopenia and osteoporosis group (P< 0.01) at periapical ROI. Significant difference was observed not only between normal and osteopenia group but also between normal and osteoporosis group at interdental ROI (P< 0.01). Positive linear relationship was weakly shown at Pearson correlation analysis between fractal dimension and radiographic image brightness. BMD significantly correlated with fractal dimension at periapical ROI (P< 0.01), and BMD and radiographic image brightness significantly correlated at both periapical and interdental ROIs (P< 0.01). Conclusion : This study suggests that the fractal dimension and radiographic image brightness of periapical ROI may predict BMD. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2005: 35 : 41-6)
Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of fractal analysis for diagnosis of periodontitis. Materials and Methods : Each 30 cases of periapical films of male mandibular molar were selected in normal group and patient group which had complete furcation involvement. They were digitized at 300 dpi, 256 gray levels and saved with gif format. Rectangular ROIs (10×20 pixel) were selected at furcation, interdental crest, and interdental middle 1/3 area. Fractal dimensions were calculated three times at each area by mass radius method and were determined using a mean of three measurements. We compared fractal dimensions at furcation and interdental crest area of normal group with those of patient group. And then we compared ratio of fractal dimensions at furcation area, interdental crest area to interdental middle 1/3 area. Results: Fractal dimension at interdental crest area of normal group was 1.979±0.018 and that of patient group 1.971±0.012 (p>0.05). Fractal dimension at furcation area of normal group was 1.986±0.024 and that of patient group 1.974±0.015 (p<0.05). The ratio of fractal dimension at interdental crest area to interdental middle 1/3 of normal group was 1.003±0.015 and that of patient group 0.993±0.018 (p<0.05). The ratio of fractal dimension at furcation area to interdental middle 1/3 of normal group was 1.006±0.018 and that of patient group 0.994±0.018 (p<0.05). Conclusion : The ratio of fractal dimension at interdental crest and furcation area to interdental middle 1/3 area showed a statistically significant difference between normal and patient group. In conclusion, it is thought that fractal analysis might be useful for the diagnosis of periodontitis.
The present study is to analyze the dimensions of affective responses according to the types of appeal in underwear advertisements and to find out the influences of affective res-ponses on the attitudes toward advertisement and brands. The research has been made by normative-descriptive survey method with the sample of 654 consumers residing in Seoul and Incheon. The data gaathered was analyzed by the methods of means, standard deviation, ANOVA, factor analysis and regression. The result are as follows : 1. There are 4 dimensions of affective responses ; Emotional dimension, Negative dimen-sion, Upbeat-activation dimension and Sexual activation dimension. 2. Affective responses to the advertising were different according to the characteristics of the consumers. According to the consumer's sex, there are significant differences in each dimension of their affective responses. To the sex appeal advertisement, man show higher degree of affective responses in Emotional, Upbeat-activation and Sexual-activation dim-ensions, while women show higher degree of affective responses in Negative dimension. 3. In case of female consumers, there are significant differences in affective responses to the both appeal type of advertisements according to consumer's age. As the age is increasing. Emotional dimension and Sexual-activation dimension are increasing, but Negative dimension is decreasing in the Ads with sex appeal. In particular, the 19∼24s age group shows strong responses in the Emotional dimension, Upbeat-activation dimension and Sexual-activation dimension to Ads with sex appeal, while it shows the lowest affective responses in Negative dimension. It represents the 19-24s age group is the most positive one to the under-wear advertisements with sex appeal. Consequently, it is proved that the Ads with sex appeal focusing on this age group can be one of the most effective advertising plans. 4. The involvement gets higher, Upbeat-ac-tivation dimension and Sexual-activation dimension are increasing both in males and female groups. But Negative dimension is in-creasing in the female consumer group of low involvement. 5. The attitudes toward advertisements and brands are comparatively stronger in the advertisements using sex appeal type. Regardless of types of appeal in the advertisements, there is a significant difference in their attitudes tow-ard Ads between male and female consumer groups. When Ads are sexual, attitudes toward Ads and Brands are stronger in the female consumer group. But males consumers show com-paratively strong attitudes toward the advertis-ements and brands in both types of appeal. 6. The age of consumers doesn't make any significant difference in their attitudes toward advertisements and brands in both types of appeal. 7. According to the involvement level of the consumers, there are significant differences in their attitudes toward advertisements. In the groups of low involvement, the female consumers show more favorite attitudes toward the advertisements with sex appeal, while the male group show more favorite attitudes toward the non-sex appeal advertisement. But there is no significant difference in consumer's attitude toward brands according to the types of appeal of the advertisement. 8. The affective responses of the consumers caused by the underwear advertisements have a respectable influence on their attitudes toward the advertisements and brands. This research represents that the advertisers should try to arise consumer's positive affective responses such as pleasant, happy, cheerful and warm-hearted emotions by the advertisements. Based on the above results of the research, it can be said that the consumer's affective responses have a strong effect not only on their attitudes toward adver-tisements but on those toward attitude toward the brands.
This study was undertaken to examine the extent to which tooth size and jaw size each contribute to dental crowding. Two groups of dental casts were selected on the basis of dental crowding. One group, consisting of 94 pairs of dental casts (46 males and 48 females) with normal occlusion. A second group, consisting of 84 pairs of dental casts (98 males and 46 females) with crowding. The results were as follows. 1. Means and standard deviations of the two groups were used to compare the two groups. 2. Significant differences were observed between two groups on the basis of tooth size, arch dimension and arch perimeter. 3. Between noncrowded group and crowded group, was crowded group was found to have large troth size than noncrowded group, while smaller arch dimension and perimeter. 4. Significant differences were observed between males and females on the basis of tooth size, arch dimension and arch perimeter. 5. Author found ideal arch shape of normal occlusion.
The author studied the prevalence and sites of orofacial pain during the latest 6 months, and psychologic symptoms under the emotional stress through SCL-90-R in thirty-five dental students(nineteen men and sixteen women) of school of Dentistry, Chonbuk National University. 26 students(74.3%), 12 men and 14 women, experienced the orofacial pain; headache, toothache, facial & buccal pain, TMJ pain and intraoral pain were occurred in 51.4%, 37.1%, 25.7%, 17.1% and 17.1% respectively. In psychological scores in before-, during- and after examination, there was no significant difference between men and women. On the other hand, when these scores were compared each other in one group with orofacial pain experience and the other group without pain experience, the former showed significantly higher values in somatization, depression, hostility, and paranoid ideation dimension before examination, interpersonal sensitivity and anxiety dimension during examination, and somatization dimension after examination than those of the later group(P<0.05). The changes of psychologic symptoms in before-, during-, and after examination were observed in one group with pain experience and the other group without pain experience, respectively; in the former group the significantly higher values of anxiety dimension in during examination than after examination, and the significantly higher values of interpersonal sensitivity dimension in before examination than after examination(P<0.05) were evaluated.
This study was undertaken to examine relationship between tooth size and arch dimension in dental crowding. Two groups of dental casts were selected on the basis of dental crowding. One group, consisting of 51 pairs of dental casts (24 male and 27 female), exhibited remarkable dental crowding. A second group, consisting of 60 pairs of dental casts (30 male and 30 female), exhibited little or no crowding. Mean and standard deviation of the following parameters were used to compare two groups. individual and collective mesiodistal tooth diameters, buccal and lingual arch widths and arch area. The following results were obtained. 1. The crowed group revealed larger tooth size than noncrowded group. (p < 0.01) 2. The crowded group smaller maxillary dental arch dimension than noncrowded group except lingual arch width at canine region. (p < 0.01) 3. The corwded group revealed smaller mandibular dental arch dimension than noncrowded group except lingal arch width at second premalar region in the male and buccal arch width at canine, premolar region in the female. (p < 0.01) 4. The crowded group revealed smaller arch area than noncrowded group in the female (p < 0.01), but there was no significance in the male.

The basic size of proportional dimension standards for Chinese women has the stature of 159cm, (chest circumference)/2 of 42.8cm.
Surgical procedures to relieve congenital right ventricular outflow tract[RVOT] obstruction of heart were performed on 125 patients from September 1985 to August 1992. There were 65 males and 60 females. Ages ranged from 7 months to 33 years with a mean age of 8 years. All the patients were divided into three main groups[I, II, III] depending on the presence or absence of cyanosis and combined anomalies. The patient were classified into two groups; A and B according to the outcome after surgical repair. Group A included the patients who had a good postoperative outcome with or without mild complications such as wound disruption, or hydrothorax. Group B included the patients who had a poor outcome including hospital death and significant postoperative complications such as heart failure, low output syndrome, respiratory failure, hepatic failure and others. And the results were summarized as follows. 1. There were no significant differences in age, body surface area and aortic dimension among the group I, II, and III, but there were significant differences among groups in pulmonary arterial dimension, ACT[aortic cross clamping time], TBT [total bypass time], preoperative and postoperative ratio of systolic pressure of right and left ventricles [pre PRV/RV and post PRV/LV], and the size of Hegar dilator which passed through the RVOT postoperatively [p<0.05]. 2. In the group A and B, there were significant differences in pulmonary arterial dimension [group A:1.6$\pm$0.5 cm, group B:1.9$\pm$0.6 cm], ACT [group A:102.3$\pm$ 46.0 minute, group B:76.1$\pm$46.1 minute], TBT [group A:133.9$\pm$56.6 minute, group B:94.9$\pm$51.9 minute], pre PRV/LV [group A:1.06$\pm$0.24, group B:0.8$\pm$0.32], post PRV/LV [group A:0.58$\pm$0.18, group B:0.43$\pm$0.16].It has been concluded that postoperative prognosis of RVOT obstruction was influenced by pulmonary arterial dimension, ACT, TBT, severity of RVOT obstruction [pre PRV/LV] and post PRV/LV.
