  • In the past, design used to be known as graphic design for printing medium. However, these days, through video media or multimedia, it has expanded to convey information thanks to the innovative development of the computer, which is digital civilization. Now design, through elaborate plans and projects, is acknowledged as creative work for communications appealing to emotion comprehensively and to transmit information effectively. This thesis presented a new methodology of mess communication using various elements such as video typography. Furthermore, reflecting feedback from hearing-unpaired people, theological background well grounded and the way to proceed in the future were also addressed.

  • TYME is an interactive typography program based on the ephemeral nature of time. It is a text based poetic tool, built with Processing. This project is presented as a performance that utilizes a computer with a display screen, a projector, and speakers. As the user types, white characters appear, flow on the score on the screen and trigger jazz sounds, then characters disappear into black space in several seconds on the screen like smoke. Typography from this invented instrument is evocative and wistful, and allows the user to associate with ephemeral time. While typing the characters as though playing an instrument at intervals of time, the user can freeze the motion and print out or save otherwise fleeting moment with a button. I intend to contain both characteristics: the amorphous shape of smoke and the elusive attribute of smoke for the expression of intangible and ephemeral time. Every alphabetic shape is derived from the video dips that I shot of smoke. The resulting alphabetic images are then programmed using the Processing scripting language and which can then be typed on the screen with a keyboard. TYME could be a model as a project that reflects the unfixed quality of digital typography, and as a design approach for interactive expressive typography by scripting code. This project also represents the characteristics of typographic play, which can be realized in an computational environment like this model.

Current Research Trends and Present Conditions on Visual Transformation of Digital Text (디지털텍스트의 시각적 변형에 관한 연구 동향 및 실태 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the research trends and the present conditions of real digital texts on "Visual Transformation." For the purpose of this study adopted two different methods: meta analysis and case study. The research trends on visual transformation of digital text were investigated through analyzing the total of 167 literature by means of synthetic meta analysis. Relevant literature was categorized into three types of research: functional, dynamic, and interactional transformation. The type of literature and research methods in each literature were analyzed. The present conditions of real digital texts on visual transformation were investigated by means of case study. The well designed 12 e-learning contents selected and analyzed in terms of the analysis framework which was drawn by the research trends. The results suggested problems as follows in designing e-learning contents. Firstly, there were some cases that did not follow the basic design principles related to typography. Secondly, the content was just provided in each learning steps without consideration of design to enhance text comprehension in many cases. Thirdly, web technology adequately was not applied to design e-learning contents.

  • The purpose of research is identifying visual factors affecting purchase of convenient store packed-meals through mobile applications. Previous studies have not covered mobile applications on purchase of convenient store packed-meals and this inspired the research topic. Document analysis and online survey are mainly implemented and 4 visual factors; typography, product image, main color, brand logo have been set as a research variables. It is revealed that consumers recognize product image prior to the rest and their purchase intentions are most significantly affected by product image. In conclusion, the product image should encourage consumers to have expectation on packed-meal and need to deliver credibility at the same time. Hence, the application should be designed to solely spotlight product image to lead consumer's concentration on it. The research can be further expanded by including non-visual factors as its variables or increasing scale of survey samples.

  • With the introduction of digital technology since the late 1970s, we have been shifting from the industrial era into the information age. New communication systems have changed our concept of reality. Korea has a wealthy communication heritage with its own language and alphabet. However, Korean typography today has struggled to keep its originality, and does not hold up well to international standards. Korean contemporary typography is not efficient for communicating. It is not orderly, organised and simple. It has currently become complicated and decorative. Moreover, many young designers are attracted by imitations of western trends. It is now time for Korea to reveal its own identity. How can it develop a new typographic language that is more sympathetic to Korean tradition\ulcorner How will Korean information design produce a contemporary style with international relevance that contributes to world culture\ulcorner This thesis will be developed a new Korean typographic language that relies more on Korean traditions. Simultaneously, in this thesis will be examined Swiss typography as a relevant style for a new Korean typography to incorporate. Swiss typography maintained a similar philosophy to Korean tradition with its emphasis on clarity and simplicity. This study will be explored the potential of creating a contemporary Korean typographic solution which combines the traditions of Korea with the clarity of Swiss typography. The first attitude of the new typographic language should focus on legibility. The second condition of the new typographic philosophy based on the ability of designers is interpretation of context. The third concept of the new language is founded on an objective, rational design attitude. The final mental attitude of the new typographic language should feel a deep obligation to traditions. It is crucial time for Korean alphabet to establish a relevant standard rather than goes uncritically with the international current. Korea has had worthy traditions.   • Today's Digital Environment made Typography to enter into a new phase. The Type which is a principal component of Typography is no exception to this aspect. However since the existing two-dimensional space has figurative potential, Visual Communication designers are still striving to explore both X axis and Y axis. In this context, Z axis which signifies 'Depth' is often recognized as an unfamiliar mathematical concept unrelated to Design Sensibility. If Z axis is used, the figurative aspect can be acquired, which was hard to be realized in the flat space, because the additional space of depth allows the expansion of omni-directional expression of target. Most notable is the fact that Z axis provided by Digital Environment has actually long existed and is inseparable from Type. This study, therefore, focuses on the three-dimensional expression of Type in the Visual Communication Design area by taking into account the above characteristics.

  • Seal is a tool to prove an individual or group. Guk-Sae and Eo-Bo uses typeface to represent their names or titles, which change from tensile to tensile and have varied from time to time. Although the Korean alphabet currently uses Hangul, it had used Chinese characters before Hun-Min-Jeong-Um was created in 1443. All seals and royal seal before the Korean Seal of State were made in Chinese characters. This thesis analyzes the concept of typography through the royal seal, and the subject of this study is 'Sugang Emperor' which is the only eight-letter version seal of the Joseon Dynasty's various royal seal. Bo-Yeong, which is shown in Bo-Myeon has artistic value with beautiful typeface and proportions, which is worth research. It examines the features of the Korean seal, analyzes and studies the typeface shape and features from the typographic perspective of the "Sugang Emperor Bo-Yeong," or writing.

  • Today, as a means of online communication, the use of emoticons is activated in SNS. Emoticon is an important element to share impact effects and fun together with various content design attempts. In this paper, we analyze the expression patterns changed through development process of emoticons, and analyze characteristics and effects of emoticons which are combined with traditional culture among the types of emoticons currently used.

  • The goal of this study was to contemplate the impact of visual formative elements on the satisfaction level of visitors in websites of toy-style products. To attain the goal, the visual element of motion graphics in websites of toy-style products, i. e., color, layout, illustration, and, typography, were independent variables and the satisfaction level of visitors as a dependent variable. The variables were analyzed objectively. First, it appeared that visual formative elements of motion graphics appeared in websites of toy-style products exerted statistically significant impacts on the satisfaction level of visitors. Second, the element exerting the most significant impact on the satisfaction level of visitors among the visual formative elements in websites of toy-style products were appeared as 'illustration' and 'color'. Thus, it was concluded that it is necessary to give priority in 'illustration' and 'color' to enhance the satisfaction level of visitors.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the way of enhancing readability with Anti-Aliasing in digital media environment. Subjects of this paper were established analyzing Anti-Aliasing & Multiple Anti-Aliasing. First, this study is to find a actual condition of using Anti-Aliasing in digital media environment. Then Gathered the information of Multiple Anti-Aliasing samples from internat. I made enhancing readablity result with that information and tested this result for finding the best result for readability. This study will present the guid line for the person who is working as a designer in field to find the best result for readability with Multiple Anti-Aliasing. Also, will show us a readablity's possibility of using Multiple Anti-Aliasing for next verson of graphic software.
