With the introduction of Macintosh computer in 1984. the environment of typography design has been digitalized rapidly. Although it has been less than 20 years, typography went through dramatic changes more than any period in the design history. Digital technology saved the time and efforts in the process of design works. The new temporal and spatial elements opened new dimensions and made it possible for typography to challenge for new experiments. On the other hand, with the overuse of digital technology, design works lack of originality and quality have been produced a lot. The purpose of this thesis is to propose the direction of the typography in the turbulent digital environment. To fulfill this goal, I have researched the typographic changes due to the technical innovations, and the experimental works of pioneering designers. As a result, I propose that the direction of digital typography is to combine the strengths and value from the historic heritage as well as digital technology, and to explore new possibilities of digital typography.

In 21st century as a digital era, visual communication design becomes more important than any other period. Recently, traditional typographic design for the communication with emphasis on the readability and experimental typographic design with emphasis on the expressionism contrary to the traditional concept coexists. There have been experiments on the typography with the establishment of modem art concept in the past: this trend is more obvious since the 1980s with the technological development of desktop computer. In this study, experimental typography works by David Carson who is one of the most representative graphic designers of the 1990s are analyzed in detail, and problems and prospects of this experimental typography in a digital era contrary to the traditional viewpoint we discussed.

Typography, as the median for communication, has expanded its roles according the attributes of the media where it Is used, and the change of media follwing the change of times is presenting new directions to the field of typography. The attempts of 20C experimental typography prioritize visual formativeness, free typography and language started to appear on printed matters and different kinds of prints put pep in magazines. Thus, experiments in the aspects of effective delivery of inpormation that letters have and aesthetic side of shapes of letter are continuing. Today with the appearance of multimedia, development of visual colture and rapid development of digital technology, the range of experimental typography has expanded even wider and therefore, different kinds of expressions became possible. As seen above, unlike the existing static printed media that carries linguistic information only, letters in the multimedia environment is shown in the movie titles, TV or web not only as a basic visual media such as type and image, but as a dynamic and complex factor that contains additional information of motion and sound factor. This study will attempt to find the historic context of focus of moment from the kinetic art and define the moving letters as kinetic typography. Therefore, this paper will have an understanding on kinetic typography's background, concept and characteristics following the change of communication environment in the multimedia era and tried to study the basic theories of kinetic typography and the information delivery and imagery function of letters. Also, this paper attempted to carry out a study on whether kinetic typography is delivering information smoothly from the aspect of communication through the image role as delivering information by studying major works of artists who have influenced kinetic typography. Based on this study, I would like to suggest new direction for effective delivery of information and value of use.

Before the digital age, the main tools used for printing out letters were pen and brush. Therefore, forms and styles of the languages modelled out during the age also revolved around the pen and brush. However, new tools and techniques introduced in the digital age to express typography put this limit in the shade. In other words, the user can make expressive and experimental typography and typefaces quickly and easily, by learning and utilizing new tools efficiently. As such, this study is to explore those cases, to understand characters and meanings of expressive and experimental typography within the context of typography history, to introduce a new tool, 'Scriptographer' developed by means of the open-source scripting plug-in for Adobe Illustrator, and to discuss the advantages, disadvantages and applicability of this tool. Further on, through case analysis of successful preceding projects, the researcher arranges a practical foundation, and estimates the practicality of this research through experimental typography series, Rush Type and Celestial Type, created by using Scriptographer.

Since Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984, important technological evolution has not only changed the computer graphics field but had a significant effect in the graphic design field for its judgement of aesthetic value. In Korea, the development of digital typeface and electronic pre-press business became active due to computer design system since Macintosh computer was introduced in 1987. Currently there are many digital type foundries in Korea and they have produced over 500 typefaces of the Korean alphabet. However, a few technological limitations and aesthetic problems still exist in the development of the Korean typeface. In this study, I have examined the role and function of computer technology in typography. Also I analyzed the aesthetic elements which are found in computer technology and compared them to traditional typography to try to find some opportunity and possibility for new method of development.

The form or interpretation of today's communication design lies in content development and storytelling to the designer. However, the understanding as well as exteriment of the mechanisms behind content creation remain an obscure concept. Particularly given the rapid development of digital technology, since the 1980s typography has been quickly transforming itself from its static state to the more dynamic'Type in Motion'. following this came the need for solid research in'Type in Motion'as the best means of presenting story content and form The previous passage has studied the effectiveness of'Type in Motion'in presenting this kind of content. Type in Motion has allowed vast developments in the methods of story presentation. It is Due that today's digital technology has given many benefits to the designer, but on the other hand, it has required a more diverse understanding of digital design. furthermore, even the designers in digital typography lack the understanding and research in'Type in Motion'not only as a mode of visual language but also of verbal language. Given this point· in hand, the entire interpretation and interrelation of story and'Type in Motion'can be considered essential, given their shaping of effective digital typography.

Typography is the combination of language of formative art. It is indeed the core means of human communication through understanding of language and formative values. Studies began on introduction of various techniques to overcome the phenomenon of the 'reaction of language', which appears as an impediment in delivery and sharing of information as the most fundamental roles. Successively, mobile printing types more readable and effective in delivering of meanings have been developed, thus widely distributed for general use. However, although such printing types might be easily used in image and digital media, such as in computer monitors, screens and mobile phone LCDs, etc., it is in fact difficult to use these printing types in printed surfaces, the traditional medium of information delivery, or in sign systems frequently encountered in our surrounding environment. As a solution for this, it is intended to create an effect of communication closer to dynamic typography expression by approaching visual message delivery system from the essence and substance of the color application, which corresponds to the visual spatial expression effect, the core element of expression in dynamic typography to possess significantly more powerful effect in terms of both message delivery capacity and readability than the conventional means of static typography.

In the 1930s modernist approaches in graphic design and typography had emerged and were exported as Swiss Style or the International Typographic Style in the late 1950s. Basel's school of Design has played an important role in the further development of the style and acted as a bridge between modern typographic traditions and new technology. This school was one of the most influential design institutes during the past half-century. Leading practitioners at this school developed a new visual vocabulary which was a revolutionary precursor to a digital era. Those ideas were widely appropriated in the'70s and'80s, becoming one of the most profound influences on American New Wave. The influence has continued into the 1990s. The intent of this study is to inquire into the history of 20th-century modern typography in a social and aesthetic context.

Typography is a subject of fundamental principle and considerable importance to the practice of design and visual language. In Typography education, we need to teach student with systematic, logic and holistic view prior to intuitive way. It must be emphasized as a foundation to all graphic design students who are familiar with digital media. despite the fact that high technology has invaded th design profession and the importance of learning how to deal with these new possibilities has grown, technological processes are not substituted nor are they excuses for not learning basic principles of Typography. Technology is merely and extension of these skills. The logic is objective and the intuition is subjective. Visual system exercises the student's ability to work objectively in thought and in method. Visual system presents the idea that logic and intuition can work together to give stronger results in problem solving than either can alone. I critically analyzed that what is system and how can we develop visual system which can be adapted to Typography education. I also have investigated visual system to find the possibility and flexibility in Typography education.

MotionTypography is crucial to effective emotional communication in digital society. In this paper, I study movements to represent emotion using motiontypography and approach two goals: First to define an emotional measure by means of emotion assesses by the public, Second to research image characteristics corresponding to movements. In this dissertation, we collect emotional words by literature and experimental surveys and extract representative emotional words using KJ method and clustering analysis. The results of research, the emotional axes selected for motiontypography represent 'calm to active' and 'soft to stiff', the viewers feel a specific emotional state from some movements of motiontypography. If, we investigate the relationship of motiontypographic visual elements with emotional words are achieved together, I think it will serve as a motiontypographic guideline that enables helping the public to easily produce motiontypography.
