Discrete cosine transform (DCT) based JPEG standard significantly improves the coding efficiency of image compression, but it is unacceptable event in serious blocking artifacts at low bit rate and low efficiency of high-definition image. In the light of all phase digital filtering theory, this paper proposes a novel transform based on discrete sine transform (DST), which is called all phase discrete sine biorthogonal transform (APDSBT). Applying APDSBT to JPEG scheme, the blocking artifacts are reduced significantly. The reconstructed image of APDSBT-JPEG is better than that of DCT-JPEG in terms of objective quality and subjective effect. For improving the efficiency of JPEG coding, the structure of JPEG is analyzed. We analyze key factors in design and evaluation of JPEG compression on the massive parallel graphics processing units (GPUs) using the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) programming model. Experimental results show that the maximum speedup ratio of parallel algorithm of APDSBT-JPEG can reach more than 100 times with a very low version GPU. Some new parallel strategies are illustrated in this paper for improving the performance of parallel algorithm. With the optimal strategy, the efficiency can be improved over 10%.
Airborne LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology has reached a degree of the required accuracy in mapping professions, and advanced LIDAR systems are becoming increasingly common in the various fields of application. LiDAR data constitute an excellent source of information for reconstructing the Earth's surface due to capability of rapid and dense 3D spatial data acquisition with high accuracy. However, organizing the LIDAR data and extracting information from the data are difficult tasks because LIDAR data are composed of randomly distributed point clouds and do not provide sufficient semantic information. The main reason for this difficulty in processing LIDAR data is that the data provide only irregularly spaced point coordinates without topological and relational information among the points. This study introduces an efficient and robust method for automatic extraction of building footprints using airborne LIDAR data. The proposed method separates ground and non-ground data based on the histogram analysis and then rearranges the building boundary points using convex hull algorithm to extract building footprints. The method was implemented to LIDAR data of the heavily built-up area. Experimental results showed the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method for automatic producing building layers of the large scale digital maps and 3D building reconstruction.

Even though so much progresses have been achieved in Multiple Object Tracking (MOT), most of reported MOT methods are not still satisfactory for commercial embedded products like Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera. In this paper, we propose a real-time multiple pedestrians tracking method for embedded environments. First, we design a new light weight convolutional neural network(CNN)-based pedestrian detector, which is constructed to detect even small size pedestrians, as well. For further saving of processing time, the designed detector is applied for every other frame, and Kalman filter is employed to predict pedestrians' positions in frames where the designed CNN-based detector is not applied. The pose orientation information is incorporated to enhance object association for tracking pedestrians without further computational cost. Through experiments on Nvidia's embedded computing board, Jetson TX2, it is verified that the designed pedestrian detector detects even small size pedestrians fast and well, compared to many state-of-the-art detectors, and that the proposed tracking method can track pedestrians in real-time and show accuracy performance comparably to performances of many state-of-the-art tracking methods, which do not target for operation in embedded systems.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare the flexural properties and perform the Weibull analysis of photo-curing three-dimensional (3D) printing resin. Methods: Photo-curing temporary resin (3D polymer) was used as a printing resin. Specimens (65 × 10 × 3.3 ㎣) were prepared following the ISO 20975-1 guidelines and according to the different printing orientations using a digital light processing 3D printer (D2 120; Dentium). The flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus, and work of fracture (WOF) were measured using a universal testing machine (Instron 3344; Instron) at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Results: In this study, the 0° orientation exhibited higher FS and WOF than the 45° orientation. Significant differences were found among the printing orientations (p<0.05). Specimens printed at the 0° orientation were the most accurate. In the Weibull analysis, 0° showed the greatest Weibull modulus (m), which represents a higher reliability. Conclusion: 3D printing should be selected and used by considering flexural properties, size accuracy, and reliability.
Among the sensors mainly used for displacement measurement, there are a linear CCD(Charge Coupled Device) and a PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) as a non-contact type. Their structures are different very much, which means that the signal processing of both sensors should be applied in the different ways. Most of the displacement measurement systems to get the 3-D shape profile of an object using a linear CCD are a computer-based system. It means that all of algorithms and mathematical operations are performed through a computer program to measure the displacement. However, in this paper, the developed system has microprocessor and other digital components that make the system measure the displacement of an object without a computer. The thing different from the previous system is that AVR microprocessor and FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) technology, and a comparator is used to play the role of an A/D(Analog to Digital) converter. Furthermore, an ATC(Automatic Threshold Control) algorithm is applied to find the highest pixel data that has the real displacement information. According to the size of the light circle incident on the surface of the CCD, the threshold value to remove the noise and useless data is changed by the operation of AVR microprocessor. The total system consists of FPGA, AVR microprocessor, and the comparator. The developed system has the improvement and shows the better performance than the system not using the ATC algorithm for displacement measurement.

Segmentation and organization of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data of the Earth's surface are difficult tasks because the captured LiDAR data are composed of irregularly distributed point clouds with lack of semantic information. The reason for this difficulty in processing LiDAR data is that the data provide huge amount of the spatial coordinates without topological and/or relational information among the points. This study introduces LiDAR data segmentation technique by utilizing histograms of the LiDAR height image data and analyzing roof shape for 3D reconstruction and visualization of the buildings. One of the advantages in utilizing LiDAR height image data is no registration required because the LiDAR data are geo-referenced and ortho-projected data. In consequence, measurements on the image provide absolute reference coordinates. The LiDAR image allows measurement of the initial building boundaries to estimate locations of the side walls and to form the planar surfaces which represent approximate building footprints. LiDAR points close to each side wall were grouped together then the least-square planar surface fitting with the segmented point clouds was performed to determine precise location of each wall of an building. Finally, roof shape analysis was performed by accumulated slopes along the profiles of the roof top. However, simulated LiDAR data were used for analyzing roof shape because buildings with various shapes of the roof do not exist in the test area. The proposed approach has been tested on the heavily built-up urban residential area. 3D digital vector map produced by digitizing complied aerial photographs was used to evaluate accuracy of the results. Experimental results show efficiency of the proposed methodology for 3D building reconstruction and large scale digital mapping especially for the urban area.

Multiple strips are required for large area mapping using ALS (Airborne Laser Scanner) system. LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data collected from the ALS system has discrepancies between strips due to systematic errors of on-board laser scanner and GPS/INS, inaccurate processing of the system calibration as well as boresight misalignments. Such discrepancies deteriorate the overall geometric quality of the end products such as DEM (Digital Elevation Model), building models, and digital maps. Therefore, strip adjustment for minimizing discrepancies between overlapping strips is one of the most essential tasks to create seamless point cloud data. This study implemented area-based matching (ABM) to determine conjugate features for computing 3D transformation parameters. ABM is a well-known method and easily implemented for this purpose. It is obvious that the exact same LiDAR points do not exist in the overlapping strips. Therefore, the term "conjugate point" means that the location of occurring maximum similarity within the overlapping strips. Coordinates of the conjugate locations were determined with sub-pixel accuracy. The major drawbacks of the ABM are sensitive to scale change and rotation. However, there is almost no scale change and the rotation angles are quite small between adjacent strips to apply AMB. Experimental results from this study using both simulated and real datasets demonstrate validity of the proposed scheme.
PURPOSE. This study aimed to fabricate provisional crowns at varying build directions using the digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing and evaluate the marginal and internal fit of the provisional crowns using the silicone replica technique (SRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS. The prepared resin tooth was scanned and a single crown was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Provisional crowns were printed using a DLP-based 3D printer at 6 directions (120°, 135°, 150°, 180°, 210°, 225°) with 10 crowns in each direction. In total, sixty crowns were printed. To measure the marginal and internal fit, a silicone replica was fabricated and the thickness of the silicone impression material was measured using a digital microscope. Sixteen reference points were set and divided into the following 4 groups: marginal gap (MG), cervical gap (CG), axial gap (AG), and occlusal gap (OG). The measurements were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Dunnett T3. RESULTS. MG, CG, and OG were significantly different by build angle groups (P<.05). The MG and CG were significantly larger in the 120° group than in other groups. OG was the smallest in the 150° and 180° and the largest in the 120° and 135° groups. CONCLUSION. The marginal and internal fit of the 3D-printed provisional crowns can vary depending on the build angle and the best fit was achieved with build angles of 150° and 180°.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the wear resistance and surface roughness of three interim resin materials, which were subjected to chewing simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three interim resin materials were evaluated: (1) three-dimensional (3D) printed (digital light processing type), (2) computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milled, and (3) conventional polymethyl methacrylate interim resin materials. A total of 48 substrate specimens were prepared. The specimens were divided into two subgroups and subjected to 30,000 or 60,000 cycles of chewing simulation (n = 8). The wear volume loss and surface roughness of the materials were compared. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test (α=.05). RESULTS. The mean ± standard deviation values of wear volume loss (in mm3) against the metal abrader after 60,000 cycles were 0.10 ± 0.01 for the 3D printed resin, 0.21 ± 0.02 for the milled resin, and 0.44 ± 0.01 for the conventional resin. Statistically significant differences among volume losses were found in the order of 3D printed, milled, and conventional interim materials (P<.001). After 60,000 cycles of simulated chewing, the mean surface roughness (Ra; ㎛) values for 3D printed, milled, and conventional materials were 0.59 ± 0.06, 1.27 ± 0.49, and 1.64 ± 0.44, respectively. A significant difference was found in the Ra value between 3D printed and conventional materials (P=.01). CONCLUSION. The interim restorative materials for additive and subtractive manufacturing digital technologies exhibited less wear volume loss than the conventional interim resin. The 3D printed interim restorative material showed a smoother surface than the conventional interim material after simulated chewing.
