  • Purpose : To determine the proper image compression method and ratio without image quality degradation in intraoral digital radiographic images, comparing the discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based JPEG with the wavelet-based JPEG 2000 algorithm. Materials and Methods : Thirty extracted sound teeth and thirty extracted teeth with occlusal caries were used for this study. Twenty plaster blocks were made with three teeth each. They were radiographically exposed using CDR sensors (Schick Inc., Long Island, USA). Digital images were compressed to JPEG format, using Adobe Photoshop v.7.0 and JPEG 2000 format using Jasper program with compression ratios of 5 : 1,9 : 1, 14 : 1,28 : 1 each. To evaluate the lesion detectability, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed by the three oral and maxillofacial radiologists. To evaluate the image quality, all the compressed images were assessed subjectively using 5 grades, in comparison to the original uncompressed images. Results: Compressed images up to compression ratio of 14 : 1 in JPEG and 28 : 1 in JPEG 2000 showed nearly the same the lesion detectability as the original images. In the subjective assessment of image quality, images up to compression ratio of 9 : 1 in JPEG and 14 : 1 in JPEG 2000 showed minute mean paired differences from the original Images. Conclusion : The results showed that the clinically acceptable compression ratios were up to 9 : 1 for JPEG and 14 : 1 for JPEG 2000. The wavelet-based JPEG 2000 is a better compression method, comparing to DCT-based JPEG for intraoral digital radiographic images.

  • Medical imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) and Ultrasound (US) produce a large amount of digital medical images. Hence, compression of digital images becomes essential and is very much desired in medical applications to solve both storage and transmission problems. But at the same time, an efficient image compression scheme that reduces the size of medical images without sacrificing diagnostic information is required. This paper proposes a novel threshold-based medical image compression algorithm to reduce the size of the medical image without degradation in the diagnostic information. This algorithm discusses a novel type of thresholding to maximize Compression Ratio (CR) without sacrificing diagnostic information. The compression algorithm is designed to get image with high optimum compression efficiency and also with high fidelity, especially for Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) greater than or equal to 36 dB. This value of PSNR is chosen because it has been suggested by previous researchers that medical images, if have PSNR from 30 dB to 50 dB, will retain diagnostic information. The compression algorithm utilizes one-level wavelet decomposition with threshold-based coefficient selection.

  • The digital images contain a significant amount of redundancy and require a large amount of data for their storage and transmission. Therefore, the image compression is necessary to treat digital images efficiently. The goal of image compression is to reduce the number of bits required for their representation. The image compression can reduce the size of image data using contractive mapping of original image. Among the compression methods, the mapping is affine transformation to find the block(called range block) which is the most similar to the original image. In this paper, we applied the neural network(SOM) in encoding. In order to improve the performance of image compression, we intend to reduce the similarities and unnecesaries comparing with the originals in the codebook. In standard image coding, the affine transform is performed with eight isometries that used to approximate domain blocks to range blocks.

  • Digital watermarking has been considered as an important technique to protect the copyright of digital content. It is essential that a watermark embedded in a still or moving image resists against various attacks ranging from compression, filtering to cropping. In particular, as JPEG is a dominant still image compression standard for Internet applications, digital watermarking methods that are robust against the JPEG compression are especially required. Most digital watermarking methods proposed so far work by modulating pixels/coefficients without considering the quality level of JPEG, which renders watermarks readily removable. In this paper, we proposed a new digital watermarking method as follows. For providing the robustness against JPEG, the quality level of JPEG is used as parameter on watermarking so as to compute the loss of image caused by JPEG compression and we compute the difference of an original image resulted from JPEG compression. Also in proposed method, we compute the visual components that are derived from the information of edge within image and consideration of brightness discrimination which is one of human visual system's properties. Thus, we proposed new watermarking scheme that after constructing a watermark by considering the loss of image resulted from JPEG compression and visual components derived from the human visual system, the watermark is embedded into the image.

  • The demand for handling images in digital form has increased dramatically in recent years. Digital image compression is required to store and transmit mass information in different from general information. JPEG(Joint Photographic Experts Group) committee founded by CCITT and ISO is define the still-image standard compression/restoration algorithm. JPEG is proposed the standard of grayscale and color still-image compression/restoration. In the image quality, JPEG is applicable to the various applications in which compression is able to from 1/10 to 1/50 without the visible obstacle. In this paper, we proposed that the proposed method enhance the compression ratio which is reducing the higher frequency in order to increasing the spatial redundancy in the image. The proposed method is using the low pass filter in order to reducing the higher frequency. The low-pass filters are using the median filter and convolution filter in the spatial domain, FFT filter in the frequency domain. We acquired the additive compression ratio reducing the higher frequency using the low-pass filter.

  • Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) has been planted as one of the key infrastructures with an overall improvement in standards of medical informationization and the stream of digital hospitalization in recent days. The kind and data of digital medical imagery are also increasing rapidly in volume. This trend emphasizes the medical image compression for storing large-scale medical image data. Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM), de facto standard in digital medical imagery, specifies Run Length Encode (RLE), which is the typical lossless data compressing technique, for the medical image compression. However, the RLE is not appropriate approach for medical image data with bilateral symmetry of the human organism. we suggest two preprocessing algorithms that detect interested area, the minimum bounding rectangle, in a medical image to enhance data compression efficiency and that re-code image pixel values to reduce data size according to the symmetry characteristics in the interested area, and also presents an improved image compression technique for brain CT imagery with high bilateral symmetry. As the result of experiment, the suggested approach shows higher data compression ratio than the RLE compression in the DICOM standard without detecting interested area in images.

  • In mapping a texture image into a 3D mesh model for photo-realistic graphic applications, the compression of texture image is as important as geometry of 3D mesh. Typically, the size of the (compressed) texture image of 3D model is comparable to that of the (compressed) 3D mesh geometry. Most 3D model compression techniques are to compress the 3D mesh geometry, rather than to compress the texture image. Well-known image compression standards (i.e., JPEG) have been extensively used for texture image compression. However, such techniques are not so efficient when it comes to compress an image with texture patches, since the patches are little correlated. In this paper, we proposed a preprocessing method to substantially improve the compression efficiency of texture compression. From the experimental results, the proposed method was shown to be efficient in compression with a bit-saving from 23% to 45%.
