A Cultural Approach to the Digital transition (지상파 TV의 디지털 전환에 대한 문화적 인식과 접근)

  • Digital TV is expected to usher in a new era of TV. Thanks to digital and network technologies, TV will no more be a dumb terminal as it is today. It will incorprate the computer and thus become an intelligent device which serves not only high quality broadcast programming, but a variety of information services much like the current networked-computer. However, the real world picture of digital TV is clearly different from such a rosy vision. Albeit too early to tell, the cases in Europe and the US attest that the digital transition suffers a setback in terms of technology, policy, business, marketing, and the users. As such, the digital transition is generally problematized in terms of policy, business model, marketing strategy, and so on. Comparatively speaking, the issues of technology, policy, business and marketing are not so complicated than that of digital TV users because of the cultural issues involved in the adoption of digital TV. In other words, the technological transition to digital TV is far easier than its cultural transition. The cultural transition demands policy makers and industries of different approaches to successfully facilitating the digital transition.

  • The methodological framework proposed in this paper addresses the strength of the applied Bass model by Mahajan and Muller(1996) that it reflects the substitution of next generations among products. Also this paper is to estimate and analyze the forecast of demand for products that do not exist in the marketplace. We forecast the sales of digital TV using estimated market share and data obtained by the face to face Interview. In this research, we use two methods to analyze the demand for Digital TV that are the forecasting the Demand for the Substitution and binary logit analysis. The logit analysis is to estimate the decisive factor of purchasing digital TV. The decisive factors are composed of purchasing plan, region, gender, TV price, contents, coverage, income, age, and TV program. We apply the model to South Korea's market for digital TV. The results show that (1) Income, region and TV price play a prominent part which is the decisive factor of purchasing digital TV. (2) We forecaste the demand of digital TV that will be demanded about 18 millions TVs in 2015

  • With an increasing demand of powerful electronic goods, smart TV containing network module with digital TV gets more popular. These change are meaningful from a digital forensics perspective because smart TV store more user's data than digital TV. In this paper, we suggest smart TV forensics as a branch of digital forensics. With smart TV forensics, investigator can trace more wide age group's activities than existing digital forensics analysis.

  • Cable TV with largest subscription base in pay TV market has difficulty in managing the task of digital switch over. This study analyzed the factors in delay of cable TV switch over and examined the impact of pay TV market structure and competition. The delaying factors turned out to be the lack of incentives and resources of cable TV operators, insufficient policy measures and acceptance tolerance issues of subscribers. Since cable TV operators with monopolistic status in pay TV market had continuous profit from analog service, they were not responsive to digital switch over which requires additional investment. Policy measures including support for the low income household and mandatory cut-off point for stopping analog broadcasting. Subscriber's willingness to accept digital broadcasting in terms of price sensitivity and preference for convenient operation also played a role. Introduction of IPTV in pay TV market influenced the speed of digital switch over of cable TV operators. MSOs with economies of scale showed higher digital switch over rate than independent SO.

A Test Stream Generating Method for the Digital TV Software (디지털 TV 소프트웨어를 위한 테스트 스트림 자동 생성 방법)

  • The input of digital TV software is the Transport Stream, which utilizes the moving picture compression technique, MPEC-2 (Moving Picture Experts Groups-2). MPEG-2 TS consists of the complicated table hierarchy and internal relationships, as well as the various restrictions with regards to system standard of digital TV software in determining the field values of transport stream. However, the general MPEG-2 TS generation tool produces transport streams solely based on the MPEG-2 TS specification itself, and does not consider the interaction between modulo features or modules themselves, which construct digital TV software. In this paper, we propose a method to systematically generate MPEG-2 TS test data, namely‘Test Stream’, for digital TV software. We present the experiment result where the test stream derived from our developed tool according to the proposed method was applied to the actual digital TV software settop-box, and then analyze the result. Apart from other existing MPEG-2 TS generation tools, the advantage of our method is that not only is it capable of generating various levels of test streams including digital TV software module, integration, and system testing, but also detecting errors and analyzing their causes.

  • This paper presents a method to determine the rolloff factors of both the digital terrestrial TV modulator and the bandpass filter (BPF) at the digital TV receiver input, using an analytical power spectral density model satisfying given co-channel and adjacent channel protection ratios for the digital terrestrial broadcasting services. Since the proposed method is very simple and effective to use, also can be used regardless of type of systems or modulation techniques, this method is expected to be applied to select some other digital terrestrial broadcasting system specifications.

  • Feb. 11. 1997, Korean Government announced FM Radio Broadcasting and TV Terrestrial TV Broadcasting will be changed to digital format in year 2001, and all Korean Broadcasting except AM Radio and Microwave will be changed to digital format before 2010. In spite of IMF economic crisis, the Digitizing is the one of the hot issue in TV Broadcasting area. The narrow view of the Digitizing the Broadcasting is a technical development from the analogue to digital, but the extended view of it means not only the technical development but the revolution in the concept of TV and service area, relationship between sender and receiver, structure of TV Industry. Thus Digitizing the Broadcasting shifts paradigm and eventually it cause a big change in the advertising creative. The digital TV could be a very encouraging technical development for the consumers convenience because of the multiple choice in the channels and interactive services which leads us to the multimedia service through the TV . On the other hand, multimedia and multi-channel, interactivity implicate a big uncertainty and risk, This research paper is about the technical aspects and social aspects of digital TV and its influence of the marketing and TV advertising creative.

  • This paper examined the leapfrogging of Korean Digital TV Industry in the midst of digital Revolution. Despite the lack of sufficient capability and core knowledge base, the Korean firms succeeded in the catching up forerunner firms in the Digital TV industry. The reasons of the success of Korean firms were as follows. Firstly, the Korean firms had some complementary asset, such as the experience of producing analog TV, and were able to develop the prototype digital TV given the accesses to the foreign knowledge via overseas R&D posts and acquisition of a foreign company. Secondly, the Korean firms were not locked in the analog technologies. As a follower, they had little sunk cost on the existing analog technologies. Thirdly, New mode of innovation, such as National R&D program for the development of HDTV and ASIC, were used as a tool for the mobilization of scarce knowledge base of digital technologies and the sharing the risks of development of path-breaking new technologies.

  • Through reviewing the characteristics of digital TVs, which have emerged in CES since 2005, in the view of technology growth and substitution curves, this paper is to provide a prediction on the next generation's multi-media on smart environment. As a result, digital TV has been developed on the flow of its technology growth curve from the early version in 2005 to smart digital TV in 2013, which emphasizes the key word "connected", and it has already come to the market puberty.

  • 디지털 방송 시대가 개막되었다. Digital TV 소프트웨어는 디지털 방송을 위한 수신기 시스템이다. 복잡한 입력 데이터를 처리하기 때문에 시스템 자체도 복잡하고 방대해 Digital TV 소프트웨어를 테스트하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 본 논문은 MPEG-2 TS 표준 형식의 입력 데이터를 이용하여 테스트 데이터를 생성했던 기존 연구를 확장하여 Digital TV 소프트웨어의 특정 모듈을 테스트 하는 방안에 대해 제안한다. Digital TV 소프트웨어의 모듈을 분석하여 테스트 시나리오를 추출하고 테스트 시나리오에 MPEG-2 TS와의 연관관계를 적용하여 데스트 데이터를 생성한다. 본 논문에서 제안만 기법을 사용하면 D-TV 소프트웨어의 특정 모듈을 테스트 하는데 적합한 테스트 데이터를 선정할 수 있을 것이다
