Honeycomb structure has been fabricated by brazing method using 0.1 wt%C and 1.0wt%C carbon steel core and STS304 stainless steel face sheet. Core shear strength ratio in W and L directions was 1:1.03 in 7 mm cell size, whereas 1:1.45 in 4 mm cell size. Flexural strength on face sheet was 166.4 MPa (0.1 wt%C, W direction), 171.1 MPa (0.1 wt%C, L direction), and 120.2 MPa (1.0 wt%C, W direction) in 7 mm cell size. And in 4mm cell size specimen, it was 169.2 MPa (0.1 wt%C, W direction), 224.2 MPa (0.1 wt%C, L direction). This means that flexural strength of 0.1 wt%C core material was higher than that of 1.0wt%C core material, which was contrary to expectation. SEM and EDS analysis represented that grain boundary diffusion had occurred in0.1 wt%C core, but no grain boundary diffusion in 1.0 wt%C core. And corrugated surface of 0.1 wt%C core was flat, whereas that of 1.0 wt%C core was not flat. As a result, contact area between two 1.0 wt%C cores was much less than that of 0.1 wt% cores, It is thought to be main reason for lower flexural strength of 1.0 wt%C core.
HIP diffusion bonding of Ni-based superalloys, cast Mar-M247 (MM247) and Udimet 720 (U720) powder, was experimentally and numerically studied. Subsolvus HIP treatment was optimized by investigating the variations of high temperature tensile properties of HIP-bonded specimens with powder size, HIP'ing time, etc. While the tensile strength at high temperatures showed no detectable changes, the tensile elongation and reduction in area were slightly increased as the powder size decreased from -140 mesh to -270 mesh. While as-HIP'ed U720 showed a high tensile strength comparable to that of lorded U720 alloy, the HIP diffusion-bonded specimen showed a strength lower than the forged U720 alloy and the cast MM247 alloy The increase of HIP'ing tune from 2 hours to 3 hours resulted in a rapid risc of tensile strength and elongation due to the disappearence of microvoids in the cast MM247. FEM simulation for HIP process was conducted by applying the McMeeking micromechanical model, which uses power-law creep model as constitutive equations. ABAQUS user subroutine CREEP with an implemented microscopic model was used for the simulation. Numerical simulation was shown to be essential for the near-net shape manufacturing as well as the HIP process optimization.
Forward osmosis (FO) is an emerging technology which can possibly make the desalination process more cost and energy efficient. One of the major factors impeding its growth is the lack of an appropriate draw solute. The present study deals with the identification of potential draw solutes, and rank them. The comparison was carried out among ten draw solutes on the basis of four main parameters namely; water flux, reverse salt diffusion, flux recovery and cost. Each draw solute was given three 24 hour runs; corresponding to three different concentrations; and their flux and reverse salt diffusion values were calculated. A fresh membrane was used every time except for the fourth time which was the flux recovery experiment conducted for the lowest concentration and the change of flux and reverse salt diffusion values from the initial run was noted. The organic solutes inspected were urea and tartaric acid which showed appreciable values in other parameters viz. reverse salt diffusion, flux recovery and cost although they generated a lower flux. They ranked 5th and 8th respectively. All the experimented draw solutes were ranked based on their values corresponding to each of the four main parameters chosen for comparison and Ammonium sulfate was found to be the best draw solute.
Artemisiae Capillaris Herba is a dried aerial part of Asteraceae capillaris Thunb.(Compositae), which has been used in Korean traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. It has a variety of pharmacological activities and has been evaluated for potential as an active ingredient in cosmeceutical products. In the cosmetics industry, animal experiments is besides the major concern of ethics, there are few more disadvantages of animal experimentation like demand of skilled manpower, time consuming protocols and high cost. Therefore, various alternatives to animal experiments have been proposed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skin permeation characteristics of chlorogenic acid and dimethyleculetin, which are constituent of Artemisiae Capillaris Herba by using Franz diffusion cell. As a result, skin permeability was characterized by flux(penetration rates) and $K_p$(permeability coefficient) value, chlorogenic acid had lower flux and $K_p$ than dimethylesculetin. According to the definitions of Marzulli, chlorogenic acid and dimethylesculetin would be classified as 'Moderate' and 'Very fast' respectively. In conclusion, skin permeation characteristics of chlorogenic acid and dimethylesculetin were confirmed through Franz diffusion cell, and suggests the direction of alternative method for skin permeation of natural compounds.
This paper presents the numerical simulation of advection-diffusion mechanism of BOD concentration which was used as an indicator of waste only in one flow-direction of waste stabilization ponds (1-dimension (1-D)). This model was represented in partial differential equation order 2. The purpose of this paper was to determine the simulation of the model 1-D of wastewater transport phenomena based advection-diffusion mechanism and did validate the model. Numerical methods which was used for the solution of this model is finite difference method with Forward Time Central Space scheme. The simulation results which was obtained would be compared with field observation data as a validation model. Collection of field data was carried out in the Wastewater Treatment Plant Sewon, Bantul, D.I. Yogyakarta. The results of numerical simulations were indicate that the advection-diffusion mechanism takes place continuously over time. Then validation of the model was state that there was a difference between the calculation results with the field data, with a correlation value of 0.998.
A nonlinear analysis is presented for the treatment of fluctuations near the critical point in the presence of diffusion in the Schlogl models. The two time scaling method is used to obtain an evolution equation for the amplitude of fluctuations. It is shown that the fluctuations decay to zero in the stable region and they are enhanced to a finite value as time goes to infinity in the unstable region.
The electroplated steel sheets were heated during the short periods(10~60 seconds) at high temperature ($360^{\circ}C$~$500^{\circ}C$) in order to investigate thermal diffusion behaviors. When the steel sheets were heated for 10 seconds, all the coated layers were alloyed at $420^{\circ}C$ but at temperature lower than $400^{\circ}C$ the $\eta$ phase partially remained on the coated surface. At higher temperature, the longer the time for heat treatment the iron contents were increased in coated layer but the glossiness and whiteness of the coated surface were decreased. While the alloying phases of $\eta$, $\zeta$, $\delta_1$ and $\Gamma$ were appeared in the coated layer at the heat treatment temperature of $360^{\circ}C$, the phase was disappeared at $420^{\circ}C$ but the rests grew in size at the temperature of $440^{\circ}C$. When the heat treatment temperature and heating time were increased, the thickness of $\Gamma$ phase was rapidly increased to 0.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The optimum conditions for the heat treatment to prevent powdering of coated layer were obtained to heat it for 30 seconds at $400^{\circ}C$ and 10 seconds at $440^{\circ}C$, and the iron content in coated layer was suited to be 10 percents.
Recently, consumption of magnesium alloys has increased especially in the 3C (computer, communication, camera) and automobile industries. The structural application of magnesium alloys has many advantages due to their low densities, high specific strength, excellent damping and anti-eletromagnetic properties, and easy recycling. However, practical application of these alloys has been limited to narrow uses of mild condition, because they are inferior in corrosion resistance and wear resistance due to their high chemical reactivity and low hardness. Various wet and dry processes are being used or are under development to enhance alloy surface properties. Various conversion coating and anodizing methods have been developed in a view of eco-friendly concept. The conventional technologies, such as diffusion coating, sol-gel coating, hydrothermal treatment, and organic coating, are expected to be newly applicable to magnesium alloys. Surface treatments for metallic luster or coloring are suggested using the control of the micro roughness. This report reviews the recent R&D trends and achievements in surface treatment technologies for magnesium alloys.
Stability and activity of boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode are key factors for water treatment. In this study, BDD electrodes were prepared on various substrates such as Nb, Si, Ti, and $TiN_x/Ti$ by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method. BDD/Ti film showed the delamination between BDD and Ti substrate due to the formation of TiC layer caused by diffusion of carbon. On the other hand, $BDD/TiN_x/Ti$ showed remarkably improved stability, compared to BDD/Ti. It was confirmed that $TiN_x$ intermediate layer act as barrier layer for diffusion of carbon. High potential window of 2.8 eV was maintained on the $BDD/TiN_x/Ti$ electrode and, better wastewater treatment capability and longer electrode working life than BDD/Nb, BDD/Si and BDD/Ti were obtained.
