  • Quantitative analysis on release behavior of the $^{85}Kr\;and\;^{14}C$ fission gases from the spent fuel material during the voloxidation and OREOX process has been performed. This thermal treatment step in a remote fabrication process to fabricate the dry-processed fuel from spent fuel has been used to obtain a fine powder The fractional release percent of fission gases from spent fuel materials with burn-up ranges from 27,000 MWd/tU to 65,000 MWd/tU have been evaluated by comparing the measured data with these initial inventories calculated by ORIGEN code. The release characteristics of $^{85}Kr\;and\;^{14}C$ fission gases during the voloxidation process at $500^{\circ}C$ seem to be closely linked to the degree of conversion efficiency of $UO_2\;to\;U_3O_8$ powder, and it is thus interpreted that the release from grain-boundary would be dominated during this step. The high release fraction of the fission gas from an oxidized powder during the OREOX process would be due to increase both in the gas diffusion at a temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ in a reduction step and in U atom mobility by the reduction. Therefore, it is believed that the fission gases release inventories in the OREOX step come from the inter-grain and inter-grain on $UO_2$ matrix. It is shown that the release fraction of $^{85}Kr\;and\;^{14}C$ fission gases during the voloxidation step would be increased as fuel burn-up increases, ranging from 6 to 12%, and a residual fission gas would completely be removed during the OREOX step. It seems that more effective treatment conditions for a removal of volatile fission gas are of powder formation by the oxidation in advance than the reduction of spent fuel at the higher temperature.

  • In this paper, 23 Silla gold earrings from the sixth and seventhand centuries, excavated from the Yeongnam region, were analyzed. Based on the silver content of the gold plate, they were classified into three types. The classifications included type I(20-50wt%), type II(10-20wt%) and type III (less than 10wt%). In the analysis process, the composition and morphological differences were identified on the surface of the gold plate. In the case of type I and II earrings, it was observed that the fine holes were concentrated in a relatively higher part of the gold content. The causes of the difference in the surface composition of the gold plate were divided into four categories: 1) surface treatment, 2) thermal diffusivity in the manufacturing process, 3) differences in composition of alluvial gold, and 4) the refining method of gold. It is possible that depletion gilding was attempted to increase the gold content while intentionally removing the other metals from the surface of the gold alloy in the portion where the gold deposit is relatively concentrated on the surface of the gold plating. The highest copper content was detected in the earring with the highest gold content of the analyzed earrings, and it was assumed that thermal diffusion had occurred between the gold plate and the metal rod during the manufacturing process rather than intentional addition. Copper was detected only in the thin ring earring type, and copper was not detected in the thick ring earring type or pendant type. It also proves that this earring has a high degree of tightness at higher temperatures, as there was an invisible edge finish on other earrings and horizontal wrinkles on the gold plate surface. In terms of the material of the gold plate, we examined whether the silver content of the gold plate was natural gold or added by alloy through analyzing the alluvial gold collected in the region. As a result of the analysis, it was found that on average about 13wt% of silver is included. This suggests that type II is natural gold, type III is refined gold, and type I seems to have been alloyed with natural gold. Here, we investigated the refining method introduced in the ancient literature, both at home and abroad, about the possibility of alloying silver after the refining process of type III earrings and then making pure gold. It was found that from ancient refining methods, silver which had been present in the natural gold was removed by reacting and combining with silver chloride or silver sulfide, and long-term efforts and techniques were required to obtain pure gold through this method. Therefore, it was concluded that the possibility of adding a small amount of silver in order to increase strength after making pure gold through a refining process is low.

  • A thinner film has superior electrical properties and a better amorphous structure. Amorphous structures can be effective in improving conductivity through a depletion effect. Research is needed on the Schottky contact, where potential barriers are formed, as a way to identify these characteristics. $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin films were prepared to examine the amorphous structure and Schottky contact, $SiO_2$ thin films were prepared using Ar = 20 sccm. $SnO_2$ thin films were deposited using mixed gas with a flow rate of argon and oxygen at 20 sccm, and $SnO_2$ thin films were added by magnetron sputtering and treated at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. To identify the conditions under which the amorphous structure was constructed, the XRD patterns were investigated and C-V and I-V measurements were taken to make Al electrodes and perform electrical analysis. The depletion layer was formed by the recombination of electrons and holes through the heat treatment process. $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin films confirmed that the pores were well formed when heat treated at $100^{\circ}C$ and an electric current was applied over the micro area. An amorphous $SiO_2/SnO_2$ thin film with heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ showed no reflection at $33^{\circ}\;2{\theta}$ in the XRD pattern, and a reflection at $44^{\circ}2\;{\theta}$. • The current study was designed to define whether a blend of prunus mume extract(25%) containing lactic acid(75%) and grape seed extract(10ppm) could affect in vitro antimicrobial activity and growth performance, intestinal microflora, plasma biochemical profiles and digestive enzymes activities in broiler chickens. In paper disc agar diffusion test, we clearly observed antimicrobial activity against E. coli in response to prunus mume extract or a blend of prunus mume extract. For in vivo test, a total of ninety six 3-d-old male broiler chicks were assigned to basal diet(CON), basal diet supplemented with antibiotics (ANTI) and 0.5% a blend of prunus mume extract(PRNUS) until 35 days of age. Throughout the entire experimental period(3-35 days), there were no differences in BW and FCR between the birds fed the basal diet with antibiotics and the diet supplemented with a blend of prunus mume. However, ANTI group showed a significant increase in BW and total gain compared to CON group. The weights of digestive organs such as the pancreas and mucosal tissues were not affected by dietary treatments. There was no difference in plasma levels of glucose, cholesterol, AST and ALT activity. However, triglyceride in plasma increased(P<0.05) in the birds fed the diet supplemented with 0.5% a blend of prunus mume extract compared to those fed antibiotics supplemented diet. The activities of pancreatic trypsin and amylase, and intestinal hydrolase including disaccharidase were not affected by dietary treatment. The colony forming units(CFU) of lactobacillus in the lower ileal-cecum of the birds fed the diet supplemented with a blend of prunus mume extract was significantly(P<0.05) higher than that of birds fed antibiotic supplemented diet without affecting the CFU of E. coli. In conclusion, the birds fed the diet supplemented a blend of prunus mume as an alternative to antibiotics showed a similar growth performance and an significant increase in lactobacillus population compared with the birds fed basal and antibiotics supplemented diets.

  • This study was conducted to determine if chlorine dioxide ($ClO_{2}$) gas might minimize microbial contamination of fresh produce. After exposing grapes to 20 ppm or 40 ppm of chlorine dioxide gas in a closed container, grapes treated with 20 ppm $ClO_{2}$ were packaged in Ny/PE/L-LDPE pouches, stapes treated with 40 ppm $ClO_{2}$ were placed in an empty corrugated box, and untreated control grapes were placed in a box with a sachet containing $ClO_{2}$ gas adsorbed to silica gel (a silica gel pad). The free volume of the sachet material allowed the release of $ClO_{2}$ gas into the headspace of packages containing fresh grapes. Control fruit not exposed to $ClO_{2}$, was placed in a box and stored at either $25^{\circ}C$ or $0^{\circ}C$. Fruit in Ny/PE/L-LDPE film treated with 20 ppm $ClO_{2}$ lost almost no weight during storage at either $25^{\circ}C$ or $0^{\circ}C$. Such fruit had a lower soluble solid content than did other fruit samples. Titratable acidity tended to fall rapidly during storage at either $25^{\circ}C$ or $0^{\circ}C$. Anthocyanin content of grapes decreased over 21 days at $25^{\circ}C$ but increased over 10 weeks at $0^{\circ}C$. The total microbial count of grapes treated with $ClO_{2}$ gas and silica gel pads were lower than controls at $25^{\circ}C$. Fruit treated with 20 ppm $ClO_{2}$ and packaged in Ny/PE/L-LDPE pouches had lower microbial counts than other fruit samples when stored at $0^{\circ}C$. The silica gel pad did not significantly improve total microbial count (compared to untreated control samples) at $0^{\circ}C$. This result may be attributed to a higher rate of diffusion of $ClO_{2}$ gas at room temperature.

  • The majority of freshwater ornamental fish are imported and distributed domestically, causing high risk of exposure to exotic pathogens and drug resistant bacteria in Korea. Aeromonas hydrophila is known as a common species of fresh water bacteria and opportunistic fish pathogen, as well as a species causing zoonotic infection. In this study, we isolated motile aeromonads from various imported freshwater ornamental fish and studied the characters of the isolates. Imported freshwater ornamental fish were purchased on day 1 after the fish were deposited in the aquarium. Bacteria were isolated from the liver, kidney and spleen of fish using 0.5% NaCl containing tryptic soy agar medium. Bacteria were grouped on the basis of their morphological characteristics. The colonies with clear zone on starch-ampicillin agar (SA agar) were tentatively identified as Aeromonas spp. Two hundred and twenty-six strains, about 70% of total isolates were assumed to be Aeromonas spp. Nine isolates were further identified based on the result of the API 20E test and PCR using primers specific for A. hydrophila 16S rRNA gene. The isolates were identified as A. hydrophila and the API 20E test showed differences in trisodium citrate, D-sucrose, D-melibiose, amygdalin and L-arabinose availability between the nine isolates and standard A. hydrophila. The susceptibilities of the isolated bacteria to 10 antibacterial agents were confirmed by the disk diffusion method. Isolated strains were found to be resistant to amoxicillin and ampicillin and sensitive to florfenicol. However, 7 isolates showed multiple drug resistances to erythromycin, oxytetracycline, nalidixic acid etc. Pathogenicity of the isolates was determined by the artificial challenge test on goldfish (Carassius auratus). Three isolates caused 60 ~ 80% mortality in goldfish within 5 days after the initiation of challenge. These results indicate that multiple drug resistant, highly pathogenic and exotic A. hydrophila can spread to domestic aquarium and the preventive treatment of fish before sale is necessary.

  • The roles of RNA- and protein-synthesis and $H^{+}$ excretion in 1AA ($10\;\mu\textrm{M}$)-induced elongation were investigated using abraded hypocotyl segments of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). The response of elongation initiated about 13 min after IAA treatment. Removal of cuticle, acting as diffusion barrier for inhibitors, by mechanical abrasion of hypocotyl segments enhanced the effect of inhibitors markedly, but the degree of abrasion for the saturated effect of inhibition was different among inhibitors. The elongation induced by 1M was completely inhibited when cycloheximide ($10\;\mu\textrm{M}$) was applied to abraded hypocotyl segments as shortly as 4 min before the onset of the growth response (= 10 min after administration of IAA). Cordycepin ($200\;\mu\textrm{M}$) prevented completely 1AA-induced elongation when applied as shortly as 19 min before the onset of the growth response (=5 min before administration of 1AA). Vanadate (1 mM) inhibited both lAA-induced elongation and medium acidification via lAA-induced $H^{+}$ excretion to apoplast. Cycloheximide and cordycepin also prevented lAA-induced $H^{+}$ excretion strongly. However, inhibition by cycloheximide of lAA-induced elongation was not alleviated by acidifying the cell wall to pH 4.5. The results indicate that, a few minutes before the initiation of growih, protein synthesis is demanded for the initiation of 1AA-induced elongation and the $H^{+}$ excretion to cell wall, and that the H+ excretion, even though it may be necessary for elongation, does not seem to bring about acid growth simply through acidifying cell wall.l wall.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of blocking the oxygen in the air during the polymerization of sealant. All curing were performed with various light curing units under the application of oxygen gel barrier, stream of nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas for inhibition of oxygen diffusion into sealant surface. The results of present study can be summarized as follows : 1. The amount of eluted TEGDMA form the specimens cured with all the three different light units in the stream of $N_2$ and $CO_2$ gas and application of Oxygen gel barrier($DeOx^{(R)}$) were significantly lower than in the room-air atmosphere (Control) (p<0.05). 2. In the $DeOx^{(R)}$ application, the amount of eluted TEGDMA the specimen cured with PAC light for 10seconds was less than that cured in the stream of $N_2$ and $CO_2$ atmospheric conditions (p<0.05) 3. In the LED using 10 or 20sec irradiation times under the stream of $N_2$ and $CO_2$, the eluted TEGDMA showed to be no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). 4. The microhardness from the specimens cured with all the three different light units under each treated conditions were significantly higher than in the room-air atmosphere (p<0.05). 5. The surface treatment by $DeOx^{(R)}$, $N_2$ and $CO_2$ reduces the thickness of oxygen inhibited layer by sp proximately 49% of the untreated control value.

  • Plants as well as crops are damaged by a combination of the hot and dry winds that has been a major factor in the reduction of crop production. A means to protect them from damaging conditions is to consider a coating material. In this study, we established laboratory screening methods to find a coating material to protect a crop from rapid transpiration caused by various factors. In a test measuring the weight loss of kidney bean seedlings for 6 days, Avion treatments decreased its weight loss (P=0.05). Owing to long-time spend in completing this assay, we performed a more simple method using a cobalt chloride paper strip, which changes from blue to red colors under water condition. Beewax, guagum, paraffin liquid, soybean oil, and PE-635 gave a waterproofing effect above 37 and 43% at 0.5 and 1 h after treatment, respectively. However, these tested materials did not show significant waterproofing results at 2 h. Although the methods produced reasonable results, a screening method to obtain more objective data is needed. An alternative is to use an instrument that can detect the transpiration of crop leaves. In a preliminary test using barley leaves, a portable photosynthesis system showed transpiration inhibition of 2% soybean oil and 10 times-diluted Avion under field conditions. In another test using the leaves of maize seedlings and apricot tree, 2% liquid paraffin and plant oils such as apricot oil, linseed oil, olive oil, and soybean oil showed significant transpiration inhibition (P=0.05). Especially, paraffin liquid and soybean oil selected from above tests gave good transpiration inhibitory effects against rice at 2%. In addition, the mixture of 2% soybean oil and a spreader showed more elevated inhibition results comparing with soybean oil or the spreader alone indicating that the spreader may be attributed to more uniform diffusion of the hydrophobic material onto the leaf surface of maize seedlings. The hydrophobic material coated physically the stomata and cuticle layers on leaf surfaces of rice. These hydrophobic materials screened in this study are expected to be used as plant coating materials.
