  • In this paper, an USB-OTG (Uiversal Serial Bus On-the-go) interface module was designed with the iris information for personal identification. The image recognition algorithm which was searching face and iris areas, was proposed with pixel differences from eye blinking after several facial images were captured and then detected without any activities like as pressing the button of smart phone. The region of pupil and iris could be fast involved with the proper iris area segmentation from the pixel value calculation of frame difference among the images which were detected with two adjacent open-eye and close-eye pictures. This proposed iris recognition could be fast processed with the proper grid size of the eye region, and designed with the frame difference between the adjacent images from the USB-OTG interface with this camera module with the restrict of searching area in face and iris location. As a result, the detection time of iris location can be reduced, and this module can be expected with eliminating the standby time of eye-open.

  • Background: Gastric cancer (GC) ranks as one of the major causes of mortality due to cancer worldwide. In Chile, it is currently the leading cause of cancer death. Identification of novel molecular markers that may help to improve disease diagnosis at early stages is imperative. Materials and Methods: Using whole-genome DNA microarrays we determined differential mRNA levels in fresh human GC samples compared to adjacent healthy mucosa from the same patients. Genes significantly overexpressed in GC were validated by RT-PCR in a group of 14 GC cases. Results: The genes CD248, NSD1, RAB17, ABCG8, Ephb1 and P2RY2 were detected as the top overexpressed in GC biopsies. P2RY2, Ephb1 and CD248 showed the best sensitivity for GC detection with values of 92.9%, 85.7% and 64.3% (p<0.05), respectively. Specificity was 85.7%, 71.4% and 71.4% (p<0.05), for each respectively.

  • In this paper, we suggest an advanced algorithm, to recognize pedestrian/non-pedestrian using second-stage cascade method, which applies Adaboost algorithm to make a strong classification from weak classifications. First, we extract two feature vectors: (i) Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) which includes gradient information and differential magnitude; (ii) Curvature-HOG which is based on four different curvature features per pixel. And then, a strong classification needs to be obtained from weak classifications for composite recognition method using both HOG and curvature-HOG. In the proposed method, we use one feature vector and one strong classification for the first stage of recognition. For the recognition-failed image, the other feature and strong classification will be used for the second stage of recognition. Based on our experiment, the proposed algorithm shows higher recognition rate compared to the traditional method.

  • The design of appropriate chemically modified electrodes should allow development of new voltammetric measurement schemes with enhanced selectivity and sensitivity. Microorganism like algae has high ability to trap toxic and heavy metal ions and different affinities for metal ions. A copper(II) ion-selective carbon paste electrode was constructed by incorporating alga Anabaena into a conventional carbon paste mixture, and then the film of 10% Nafion was coated to avoid the swelling of the electrode surface. Copper ion could be deposited at the 25% algamodified electrode for 15 min without the applied potential while stirring the solution by only immersing the electrode in a buffer (pH 4.0) cot1taining copper(II). Temperature was controlled at $35^{\circ}C$. After preconcentration was carried out the electrode was transferred to a 0.1 M potassium chloride solution and was reduced at -0.6 volt at $25^{\circ}C$. The differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry was employed. A well-defined oxidation peak could be obtained at -0.1 volt (vs SCE). In five deposition / measurement / regeneration cycles, the responses were reproducible and relative standard deviations were 3.3% for $8.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ copper(II). Calibration curve for copper was linear over the range from $2.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$. The detection limit was $7.5{\times}10^{-5}M$. Studies of the effect of diverse ions showed that the coexisting metal ions had little or no effect for the determination of copper. But anions such as cyanide. oxalate and EDTA seriously interfered.

  • Objectives: Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) have a tendency to recur and possess an aggressive nature. the aim of the present study was to evaluate cytokeratin (CK) expression patterns as a method for the differentiation between dentigerous cysts (DCs) and OKCs, as their histomorphologic appearance are often indistinguishable. Materials and Methods: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 43 OKCs and 38 DCs were immunohistochemically analyzed with i-solution in a quantitative manner in order to evaluate the immunoreactivity of CK 10, 16 and 17. Results: CK 10 expression was evident in 79.1% of OKCs but found in only 18.4% of DCs (P<0.05), and CK 10 expression was observed to occur more frequently in OKCs (mean 25.45%) than in DCs (2.19%) (P<0.05). The expression of CK 16 was evident in 79.1% of OKCs but found in only 7.9% of the DCs (P<0.05) and CK 16 expression was observed to occur more frequently in OKCs (mean 4.33%) than in the DCs (0.61%) (P<0.05). The expression of CK 17 was evident in 88.4% of OKCs but seen in only 15.7% of the DCs (P<0.05) and CK 17 expression was observed to occur more frequently in OKCs (mean 31.11%) than in the DCs (2.37%) (P<0.05). Conclusion: The immunohistochemical detection of CK 10, 16 and 17 can be utilized as a valuable biomarker for use in distinguishing between OKCs and DCs, which have clinically significant differential diagnoses.

  • Spatial distributions of alloying elements of an Fe-based amorphous ribbon with a nominal composition of $Fe_{75}C_{11}Si_2B_8Cr_4$ were analyzed through the atom probe tomography method. The amorphous ribbon was prepared through the melt spinning method. The macroscopic amorphous natures were confirmed using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Atom Probe (Cameca LEAP 3000X HR) analyses were carried out in pulsed voltage mode at a specimen base temperature of about 60 K, a pulse to base voltage ratio of 15 %, and a pulse frequency of 200 kHz. The target detection rate was set to 5 ions per 1000 pulses. Based on a statistical analyses of the data obtained from the volume of $59{\times}59{\times}33nm^3$, homogeneous distributions of alloying elements in nano-scales were concluded. Even with high carbon and strong carbide forming element contents, nano-scale segregation zones of alloying elements were not detected within the Fe-based amorphous ribbon. However, the existence of small sub-nanometer scale clusters due to short range ordering cannot be completely excluded.

  • Simultaneous measurements of trace platinum and rhodium, based on catalytic reduction of protons by the adsorbed Pt-formazone and Rh-formaldehyde complexes formed in formaldehyde-hydrazine-sulfuric acid medium, were demonstrated. The conditions for the measurements of Pt and Rh both present at trace levels (>10-10 M) were 0.004% (w/v) formaldehyde-0.0012% (w/v) hydrazine-0.75 M sulfuric acid. In this medium method detection limits are 7.3${\times}$10-11 M Pt and 3.2${\times}$10-11 M Rh. And dynamic ranges are 5${\times}$10-10~6${\times}$10-8 M and 1${\times}$10-10∼2${\times}$10-8 M for platinum and rhodium respectively. In the linear dynamic ranges, Rh and Ir interfere platinum in the presence of only 10 and 100 times that of Pt respectively. There are no interferences from other platinum group metal ions for rhodium even in the presence of a 500-fold excess of Ir(IV), a hundredfold excess of platinum.
