Background: Although a variety of instruments implement body maps for the precise identification of pain symptoms, no instrument has been validated for use in people with obesity. This study reports the adaptation and validation of body maps for musculoskeletal pain location in people with obesity. Methods: Nine key anatomical regions were highlighted based on the original images of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire body maps. Adult silhouettes were generated from photographs of men and women with obesity. The body dimensions were adjusted to take into account the different body fat distribution patterns of people with obesity. The validity of the images was assessed by 12 experts. Subsequently, a data collection stage was performed with 58 patients with severe obesity from both sexes. The reproducibility of the images was tested by comparison with the original images. Results: The results of the validation pilot study indicated that the adapted images facilitated the location of musculoskeletal pain in men and women with obesity. The reproducibility of the original and adapted versions of the body maps indicated good agreement for pain over the last 12 months and 7 days (80% vs. 79.7%). Pain scores in the last 12 months indicated good and high sensitivity and specificity for all body areas (60.9% vs. 89.1%). Considering pain in the last 7 days, high sensitivity and specificity for all areas of the body (85.1% vs. 70.1%). Conclusions: The body maps developed in this study are reliable and valid to identify the location of pain in people with obesity.
The experiment has been analyzed for genetic architecture of behavioral trait in strains selected for positive and negative phototaxis in Drosophila melanogaster. Response to selection for two different directions was rapidly diverged in their phototactic scores. Realized heritabilities for the first teh generations of selection in the positive and negative strains calculated to be 3.08% and 2.86%, respectively in both sexes. The frequency of deleterious chromosomes(lethal and semilethal chromosomes) in the positively selected strain(43%) was higher than that of negatively selected one (18%). The unselected strain(27%) was intermediate frequency between both selected strains. The correlated relationship between deleterious genes and photopositive polygenes was confirmed by the phototactic behavior of the lethal heterozygotes($1_i/1_j$). Form the results, the deleterious genes induced by long term selection for phototaxis would be considered some linkage relationship with photopositive polygenes.
The present study was done to investigate the effect of dietary supplemental freezer dry powder fermentation soybean by Bacillus subtilis (natto) on the growth performance and intestinal microflora, prevention of fowl typhoid infection, the uptake of vegetative diet in broiler chickens. The chickens were fed control diet (supplement antibiotics) and fermentation soybean (0.75, 1.5, 3%) diets. A total of 280 one day old broiler chickens with randomly mixed sexes were fed the four diets for 6 weeks. Body weight gain of chicken fed 1.5% fermentation soybean by B subtilis tend to increase higher than the control from 6th week. Chickens fed diets containing 1.5% fermentation soybean by B subtilis had higher intake than those fed the other levels to the 3th weeks, but lower than control from the 4th week to the 6th week. Feed conversion also improved significantly in the supplemental 1.5% fermentation soybean by B subtilis from the 4th week to the 6th week. The number of B subtilis and Lactobacillus spp in the ileum and cecum tend to increase in the supplemental fermentation soybean by B subtilis at 6 week of age, but was not significantly different. In the nutrient digestibility, the feed conversion on the supplemental 1.5% fermentation soybean by B subtilis was better than the control and the weight of drying feces lower than the control. In test of S. gallinarum intramuscular inoculation, reisolation rate of S gallinarum in liver and feces 1.5% the fermentation soybean by B subtilis 75% (liver), 17% (feces) had decreased than the control.
The objectives of this study were to characterize the health status, the requirement of home nursing care, and dependency of daily life of the elderly so that the result could be used to provide basic data necessary for establishing home nursing care practices. The study subjects were 249 elders over 65 years old who resided at home in low income areas of three districts in Pusan. The field survey was conducted from December 27, 1993 through January 27, 1994, with a structured questionnaire. Statistical analysis was done by X²-test and Student's T-test using SPSS/PC/sup +/ program. The result were as follows; 1. Alcohol drinking rate was 50.0% for men and 27.7% for women, and cigarette smoking rate was 77.8% for men and 27.1% for women. 92.9% of elders aged 65-75 exercised regularly as compared to 81.9% of elders aged 75 and over(p<0.05). 2. 63.9% of male and 85.9% of female elders had chronic diseases showing singnificant differences(p<0.01), and both sexes had 1.7 kinds of chronic diseases in average; musculoskeletal diseases were the most common in 25.7%, while 6.8% of the elderly had cardiovascular diseases. 3. Partially movable elderly was 6.9% for men and 6.8% for woman, showing 47.1% of causes being cerebrovascular accidents. 4. The home nursing requirement was the highest for medication(66.3%), intramuscular injection(53.8%), and measurement of blood pressure·body·temperature·pulse rate(47.0%). 5. Among Physical Activities of Daily Life, bathing(10.4%) and movement(4.0%) showed high dependency rates, and among Instrumental Activities of Daily Life, phone calling(25.3%), shopping(24.5%), going out by bus(22.5%) showed high dependency rates. 6. For five categories of home nursing showing high requirements such as physical health examination, blood pressure·temperature·pulas rate measurements, medication, and intravascular injection, the requirements were different by age groups, education, and marital status(p<0.05).
The pupose of this study is to investigate the effect of irrational relationship beliefs on marital duality of married men and women and to find out what sub-scales of irrational relationship beliefs have effect on marital quality. The data were collected from 301 married men and 302 married women living with their unmarried children in the metropolitan area around Seoul. All the respondents were asked to answer the self-reporting questionnaires. The analysis includes frequencies, means, 1-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, and hierarchical multiple regression models. the major findings are as follows. 1) The level of irrational relationship beliefs is below the average, and the married women show slightly higher level of irrational relationship beliefs than the men. On the other hand, the level of marital quality of the married men and women is slightly above the average with no difference between the men and the women. 2) In the case of the married men, the sub-scales of irrational relationship beliefs that have significantly negative effect on the marital quality are 'partners cannot change', 'disagreement is destructive,' and 'sexes are different' 3) In the case of the married women, the sub-scales of irrational relationship beliefs that have significantly negative effect on the marital quality are 'partners cannot change' and 'disagreement is destructive' According to the result of this study, irrational relationship beliefs have negative effect on marital quality. However, the effect of each sub-scales shows slight differences in gender. The finding of this study suggests that a promoting marital promoting marital qualify by reducing the irrational relationship beliefs should take the gender differences into consideration.
This study attempted to find out a way which is to establish a desirable value and social culture related to sexuality. This study examined student's value and preference about sex and at the same time resolving method to correct ill-rooted value of male preference in our social culture. This study subjects consisted of 409 male and female students of a college located in Incheon area. The study data collected from June 5th to June 11th. 1998. Survey technique was chosen to collect data and analized by SPSS/PC+, SAS program using statistical methods of frequency. percent. $X^ 2-test$ and t-test. The study results are as follows ; 1) Sex satisfaction score of male students was higher than female students and the difference was significant statistically (p<0.0001). 2) There was a difference between male and female student's thought that our socity's structure has a sex discrimination. But female students felt strongly unequality of sex in our socity. 3) $65.4\%$ of total students have a general knowledge about sex and female student's score was higher than male students. The high percent of students get into know sex through mass media $(32.6\%)$ and peer groups $(31.9\%)$. 4) Student's attitude to sex was different from male and female students. Male students have more liberal attitude about sex than female students. 5) $97.1\%$ of the total students believe that our socity has son preference. 6) $86.5\%$ of the total students thought that sex ratio disproportion resulted from male preference is worriable problems in our socity. But there was no significant difference between both sexes.
To understand the effect of prenatal stress on sex-specific changes in embryonic and placental growth, a synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone) was administered intraperitoneally at a dosage of 1 mg/kg body weight (BW) (Dex1) or 10 mg/kg BW (Dex10) to pregnant ICR mice at the gestational days 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5 post coitum (p.c.). Embryos and placentas were then harvested at days 11.5 and 18.5 p.c., and their body weight and size were measured following the determination of sex through PCR using Sry specific primers in tail tissues. As a result, female embryos presented reduced fetal body weight and size in Dex1- and Dex10-treated groups than those of control group at the embryonic day 11.5 p.c. Interestingly, the growth seems to be recovered at day 18.5 as there was no difference in growth between control and dexamethasone treated groups. In the case of males, Dex1 induced a decrease in fetal weight in day 11.5 and this pattern was maintained until day 18.5, whereas their growth was not affected by Dex10 treatment. Placental growth showed similar patterns to fetal growth in both sexes but the extent of reduction was not statistically significant in most cases. Placental weights in Dex1- and Dex10-treated group were decreased significantly in male only. The results imply that the effect of prenatal stress is largely sex dependent due to different strategies for growth and survival in a stressful environment.
In order to figure out the normal range, lower limit of hypertension and upper limit of hypotension of the blood pressure of Korean, authors had measured blood pressure according to Korotkow's method for 31,897 healthy persons as samples who were occupied different levels of the social class except cases who would seem to be the essential hypertension and had the diseases affecting to secondary hypertension. A following conclusion was induced by actual measurement and statistical reasoning. 1. The normal range and limits of hypo- and hypertension by sex and age groups of Korean were demonstrated in Table 1 and Figure 1. 2. The more aging the higher value of blood pressure in both sexes, especially women rather than men and systolic as to diastolic. 3. Generally, blood pressure values of female were lower than male, after 55 years of age, however, the crossing phenomenon was recognizable. 4. To settle the normal and abnormal ranges of the blood pressure of Korean, it was attempted that $M{\pm}1.282{\sigma}$ as normal range, $M+2{\sigma}$ as lower limit of hypertension and $M-2{\sigma}$ as upper limit of hypotension were calculated, and regression lines were drawn to adjust the biological variables and derive continuity from each age class. (Fig. 2 and 3) 5. The blood pressure levels were becoming elevated as to getting increased of the body weight, particularly diastolic value at 40-49 age group in male and systolic value at 30-39 age group in female.
Data are presented concerning the effect of different seasons and sexes during the growing period on broier performance. Total 38, 451 broiler chickens were raised in spring, summer and winter and they were marketed at 6 or 7 weeks of age. Birds were alloted to l18 groups (240-360 birds per pen) and weighted at termination in order to determine variation in several economic traits between the sex groups. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. Livability, body weights and feed requirements were improved you but there was no significant improvement in feed intake. 2. There was no difference in livability by seasons, but average final weights were ; 2, 320, 2, 238 and 2, 138 grams for spring, winter and summer, respectively, and feed requirements were : 2.02, 2.01 and 2.04 for spring, winter, and summer, respectively.
Studies on the flavour characteristics of meat-based broth, quantification of flavour-related and functional compounds, and factors affecting the availability of such compounds are minimal. The present study was designed to determine the effects of sex on flavor-related and functional compounds in freeze-dried broth (FDB) made from Korean native chickens (KNC). Male and female KNC from a commercial strain (Woorimatdag$^{TM}$) were reared under similar commercial conditions. FDB was separately prepared using male and female birds aged 100 d (six birds of each sex) and analyzed for nucleotide, free amino acid, betaine, carnitine, carnosine, anserine, and creatine contents, and fatty acid composition. The levels of betaine, carnitine and creatine in FDB were not significantly different between the two sexes (p>0.05) in KNC. Carnosine and anserine were not detected in FDB samples. However, FDB from female chickens had significantly higher inosine-5-monophosphate and arachidonic acid contents than did FDB from male chickens. FDB prepared with male KNC contained higher levels of inosine, linoleic acid, glycine, alanine, lysine, and serine (p<0.05). However, glutamic acid, oleic acid, and DHA were present in comparable amounts (p>0.05) in FDB made from male and female KNC. Our findings suggest that the sex of KNC has significant effect on the contents of flavor-related compounds, but not functional compounds.
