From Zomia to Holon: Rivers and Transregional Flows in Mainland Southeastern Asia, 1840-1950

  • How might historians secure for the river a larger berth in the recent macro-historical turn? This question cannot find a greater niche than in the emerging critique of the existing spatial configuration of regionalism in mainland Southeastern Asia. The Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong and Yangtze rivers spread out like a necklace around Yunnan and cut across parts of the territories that are known as South, Southeast and East Asia. Each of these rivers has a different topography and fluvial itinerary, giving rise to different political, economic and cultural trajectories. Yet these rivers together form a connected "water-world". These rivers engendered conversations between multi-agentive mobility and large-scale place-making and were at the heart of inter-Asian engagements and integration until the formal end of the European empires. Being both a subject and a sponsor of transregional crossings, the paper argues, these rivers point to the need for a new historical approach that registers the connections between parts of the Southeast Asian massif through to the expansive plain land and the vast coastal rim of the Bay of Bengal and the China Seas. A connection that could be framed through the concept of Holon.

Phytochemicals and antioxidant activity in the kenaf plant (Hibiscus cannabinus L.)

  • Chemical compounds from four different tissues of the kenaf plant (Hibiscus cannabinus), a valuable medicinal crop originating from Africa, were examined to determine its potential for use as a new drug material. Leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds were harvested to identify phytochemical compounds and measure antioxidant activities. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analyses identified 22 different phytocompounds in hexane extracts of the different parts of the kenaf plant. The most abundant volatile compounds were E-phytol (32.4%), linolenic acid (47.3%), trisiloxane-1,1,1,5,5,5-hexamethyl-3,3-bis[(trimethylsilyl)oxy] (16.4%), and linoleic acid (46.4%) in leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds, respectively. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography identified the major compounds in the different parts of the kenaf plant as kaemperitrin, caffeic acid, myricetin glycoside, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds, respectively. Water extracts of flowers, leaves, and seeds exhibited the greatest DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD activity. Our analyses suggest that water is the optimal solvent, as it extracted the greatest quantity of functional compounds with the highest levels of antioxidant activity. These results provide valuable information for the development of environmentally friendly natural products for the pharmaceutical industry.

임플랜트 고정체의 형태가 임플랜트 초기안정성에 미치는 영향 (INFLUENCE OF IMPLANT FIXTURE DESIGN ON IMPLANT PRIMARY STABILITY)

  • Statement of problem: Current tendencies of the implant macrodesign are tapered shapes for improved primary stability, but there are lack of studies regarding the relationship between the implant macrodesign and primary stability. Purpose: The purpose is to investigate the effect of implant macrodesign on the implant primary stability by way of resonance frequency analysis in the bovine rib bones with different kinds of quality. Material and method: Fifty implants of 6 different kinds from two Korean implant systems were used for the test. Bovine rib bones were cut into one hundred pieces with the length of 5 cm. Among them forty pieces of rib bones with similar qualities were again selected. For the experimental group 1, the thickness of cortical part was measured and 20 pieces of rib bones with the mean thickness of 1.0mm were selected for implant placement. For the experimental group 2, the cortical parts of the remaining 20 pieces of rib bones were totally removed and then implants were placed on the pure cancellous bone according to the surgical manual. After placement of all implants, the implant stability quotient(ISQ) was measured by three times, and its statistical analysis was done. Results: There are statistically significant differences in ISQ values among 4 different kinds of Avana system implants in the experimental group 2. For the experimental group 1, Avana system implants showed significantly different ISQ values, but when differences in the thickness of cortical parts were statistically considered, did not show any significant differences in ISQ values. Among Oneplant system implants, there are no significant differences in ISQ values for the experimental group 2 as well as for the experimental group 1. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, bone quality and implant design have some influences on the primary stability of implants. Especially in the bone of poor quality, tapered shape of implants are more favorable for the primary stability of implants.

약용식물의 부위별 및 추출용매에 따른 효능 연구 (The Study on the Efficacy of Herbal Plant Extracts by the Part and Solvent Extraction)

  • 본 연구는 한방화장품의 원료로써 사용이 되는 약용식물들의 부위별 및 추출용매에 따른 추출물의 효능의 차이를 기술하였다. 기존의 단일성분 분석법보다 실제로 성분의 복합체인 추출물에 대하여 항산화와 UV흡수 관련 효능효과 시험법을 적용하였다. 약효를 가지는 약용식물들을 추출할 때 고려해야 할 조건이 있다. 같은 약용식물이라도 채취시기, 채취장소, 채취부위와 같은 채취조건들과 용매의 종류, 추출시간, 추출온도와 같은 추출조건들을 고려하여야 한다. 조건 중에서 추출용매와 채집부위는 효과에 있어서 매우 중요한 요인이다. 약용식물에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 여러 가지의 채취조건과 추출조건을 연구하여 한방원료의 개발에 있어 좀더 다양한 적용이 요청되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 약용과 식용으로 널리 사용되는 식물(Terminalia chebula, Syzygium aromaticum, Paeonia lactiflora, Morus alba, Scutellaria baicalensis)을 선정하여 추출용매와 채집부위를 변경시킴으로써 용매와 부위에 따른 효능의 차이를 확인하였다. 이 결과로 추출시 적당한 조건을 선택한다면 사용되는 약용식물의 양을 줄이거나 좀더 효과적인 결과를 얻을 수 있다.

서양민들레 부위별 추출물의 항산화 및 세포독성 연구 (Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Potentials of Methanol Extracts from Taraxacum officinale F. H. Wigg. at Different Plant Parts)

  • 서양민들레의 부위별 성분 및 생리활성 차이를 검토하고자 폴리페놀 함량, 플라보노이드 함량, 항산화성 및 세포독성을 분석하였다. Folin-Denis방법에 따른 총 페놀 함량은 꽃 추출물에서 72.0 mg $kg^{-1}$으로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 그 다음이 잎, 뿌리, 꽃대 추출물 순으로 나타났다(p<0.05). 한편, 총 플라보노이드 함량은 총 페놀 함량과 같은 경향을 보였으나 더 낮은 범위의 함량이 검출되었다. DPPH 라디컬 소거능은 추출물 농도가 증가할수록 높은 활성을 보였으며 그 중 꽃 추출물 ($IC_{50}$ 값 = 624.3 mg $kg^{-1}$)에서 가장 높은 활성을 보였고 그 다음으로 잎, 뿌리, 꽃대 추출물 순으로 나타나($p$ <0.05), 이는 페놀 및 플라보노이드 함량이 DPPH 라디컬 소거능과 관련이 있음을 보여 주었다. MTT법에 의한 세포독성 시험에서 폐암세포주(Calu-6)와 위암세포주(SNU-601)의 세포 생존율은 꽃 추출물에서 가장 낮았고($IC_{50}$값 = 85.7과 311.4 mg $kg^{-1}$), 그 다음으로 잎, 꽃대, 뿌리 추출물 순으로 뿌리 추출물이 가장 높은 생존율을 보였다. 이는 세포독성이 꽃 추출출물에서 가장 높고, 뿌리에서 가장 낮은 것을 보여 준 것이다. 결론적으로 총 페놀 함량과 총 플라보노이드 함량이 항산화성($r^2$=0.7280 to 0.9971)과 세포독성($r^2$=0.5795 to 0.9515)에 높은 상관관계가 있고, 그 함량과 활성은 식물체 부위별로 다르게 나타남을 확인하였다.

뽕나무(Morus alba L.) 부위별 생리활성 측정 및 기능성 물질 분석 (Evaluation of Biological Activity and Analysis of Functional Constituents from Different Parts of Mulberry (Morus alba L.) Tree)

  • 뽕나무를 이용한 당뇨, 고혈압 및 노화 개선용 고부가가치의 기능성 소재 및 제품을 개발하기 위한 연구의 일환으로 먼저 뽕나무 부위별(오디, 상엽, 상지, 상백피) 물 및 에탄올 추출물을 제조하여 그들의 항산화, 항당뇨, 항염증 및 미백 활성을 in vitro assay를 이용하여 각각 측정하였으며, 아울러 각부위별 주된 기능성 성분의 함량을 HPLC를 이용하여 측정한 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 뽕나무 부위별 물 및 에탄올 추출물의 생리활성 및 기능성 성분의 함량을 측정한 결과 거의 대부분 에탄올 추출물이 물 추출물보다 활성과 함량이 높았다. 잠상상물 중 오디, 상백피 및 상지 에탄올 추출물이 가장 강한 항산화($IC_{50}=128.4{\mu}g/mL$), ${\alpha}$-glucosidase($IC_{50}=12.0{\mu}g/mL$) 및 lipoxygenase($IC_{50}=36.3{\mu}g/mL$)와 tyrosinase($IC_{50}=410.3{\mu}g/mL$) 저해 활성을 각각 나타내었다. 한편 오디에는 anthocyanin(cyanidin 3-glucoside: 213.20 mg/100 g), chlorogenic acid(123.61 mg/100 g) 및 rutin(66.51 mg/100 g)이, 상엽에는 다량의 chlorogenic acid(514.97 mg/100 g)가 함유되어 있었으며, 특히 에탄올 추출물에는 물 추출물에 존재하지 않는 항당뇨 및 항고혈압성 quercetin 3-O-(6-O-malonyl)glucoside(143.25 mg/100 g) 및 kaempferol 3-O-(6-O-malonyl)glucoside(30.25 mg/100 g) 성분이 존재하였다. 상지 및 상백피에는 항염증 및 항노화성 oxyresveratrol 성분이 주성분으로 존재하였으며, 특히 상지 추출물에는 oxyres-veratrol glycoside(48.90 mg/100 g) 및 aglycone(21.88 mg/100 g) 성분이 다 존재하는 반면, 상백피에는 oxyresveratrol glycoside(724.05 mg/100 g)가 거의 대부분 차지하고 있었다. 또한 상백피(223.90 mg/100 g) 및 상엽(86.07 mg/100 g)에는 항당뇨 및 항고혈압성 ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid 및 1-deoxynojirimycin 함량이 가장 많이 함유되어 있었다. 이상의 결과로부터 항산화성이 강한 오디 및 상엽 추출물과 항당뇨, 항염증 및 미백 활성이 높은 상지 및 상백피 추출물을 적절히 혼합한 성인병 예방용 고부가가치 잠상산물 복합제품의 개발이 요구되고 있으며, 현재 항당뇨 및 항염증 활성이 강한 상지 및 상백피 물 추출물을 이용한 기능성 음료 및 와인 개발과 더불어 항염증 및 미백 활성이 높은 상지 및 상백피 에탄올 추출물을 이용한 여드름 개선 및 미백 한방화장품 개발에 관한 연구가 진행되고 있다.

인삼의 부위별 식이섬유소 분포 및 조성 (Distribution and Composition of Dietary Fiber in Various Parts of Ginseng Root)

  • Six-year-old ginseng roots were divided into rhizome, main root (epidermis, cortex and xylem) and lateral root (big tail root, mid tail root and fine tail root) and the concentration levels of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) in each part of the ginseng were investigated. The amount ratios of SDF to IDF (SDF/IDF) in various parts of the ginseng root were also compared. The concentration levels of SDF and IDF in the ginseng root were 6.56% and 15.41 %, respectively, where the level of SDF in main root was a little higher than that of lateral root. However the amount of IDF in main root was lower than that of lateral root. The SDF/IDF was highest in main root, 0.513, which was higher than that of lateral root or rhizome. The SDF/IDF was 0.704 in xylem, 0.478 in cortex, and 0.099 in epidermis of the main root and the SDF/IDF was 0.576 in big tail root, 0.463 in mid tail root, and 0.255 in fine tail root of the lateral root. It has been reported that SDF might have preventive effects on diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, colon and rectum cancers, while IDF might have preventive effects on constipation. Therefore, main root of six-year- old ginseng root is thought to have a little different physiological activity from lateral or fine tail roots.

Differences between Japanese Characteristics and those of Europeans from the viewpoint of TQM: -Ways of thinking at the stage of design and/or development of new products-

  • In the 11th AQCS(1997), the paper entitled 'Statistical Analysis of Baseball Records - Jinx and National Characteristics -' was presented by the same authors. At that time, the differences between Japanese characteristics and those of Europeans, using baseball data were discussed, mainly from the viewpoint of 'ways of thinking about chance cause and assignable cause.' In this paper, the authors described also on the same subject from the different viewpoint, 'ways of thinking at the design and development stage of new products', From this viewpoint, the difference also be found. It seems that the most significant difference between Japan and Germany exists in the field of aeroplanes design. The German ideas in the field were very unique, therefore the authors classified and named their ideas as: A) 'Quantitative analysis' type idea, and B) 'Chemical synthetic' type idea. The former concept is composed of two ways of thinking: a) All parts essential for just flying must be used, but b) All other parts shall be rejected, as far as possible. The latter concept is that, the all additional parts necessary for the development of the above 'purified' original product should be added respectively, depending on the requests of customers. These ideas are outlined using the actual examples of German aeroplane.

중정비 신뢰성 향상을 위한 Burn-in 시험 적용 사례연구 (Burn-in Test Case Study for Heavy Maintenance to Improve the Reliability)

  • 도시철도차량의 출입문 장치는 중정비 6년 검사에서 총 75종 단위부품 중 34종 75개의 부품을 정기적으로 교체하며, 나머지 비정기 교환부품인 40종 68개 부품도 필요 시 교체하고 있어 사실상 초기제품에 가까운 상태가 되며, 한편으로는 기존 부품과 다수의 교환된 부품이 혼용 사용되면서 완전한 신품과는 또 다른 제품특성을 가지게 된다. 본 연구는 이러한 출입문 장치의 정비 후 특징을 고려하여 도시철도차량의 신뢰성을 향상하는 방법으로 번인시험을 제안하며 시험에 적합한 조건과 목표 값을 새롭게 제시하였다.

회전성형 제품의 품질 개선을 위한 연구 (A Study on Quality Assurance for Rotational Molding Products)

  • Rotational molding is a plastics processing technique that is ideally suited to producing relatively large, hollow, seamless parts which are partially or totally enclosed. Designers of plastic parts turn to rotational molding to produce small or large parts of unusual shape that cannot be produced as one piece by other processes, e.g., blow molding and thermoforming. In this paper, in order to enhance the quality of rotational molding plastic products, 1) surface features for the plastic products are characterized by using an image analysis system, 2) maximum tensile strength for the plastic products that are made of materials that consist of Samsung-Atofina R90lU, pigments and two different kinds of calcium carbonate (OMYA CaCO$_3$) is measured and compared with each other by using an Instron universal testing machine, 3) thickness for the plastic products is non-destructively measured to investigate the quality of the plastic products by using an A-scan ultrasonic tester.
